Light-Cone Quantization and Hadron Structure
In this talk, I review the use of the light-cone Fock expansion as a
tractable and consistent description of relativistic many-body systems and
bound states in quantum field theory and as a frame-independent representation
of the physics of the QCD parton model. Nonperturbative methods for computing
the spectrum and LC wavefunctions are briefly discussed. The light-cone Fock
state representation of hadrons also describes quantum fluctuations containing
intrinsic gluons, strangeness, and charm, and, in the case of nuclei, "hidden
color". Fock state components of hadrons with small transverse size, such as
those which dominate hard exclusive reactions, have small color dipole moments
and thus diminished hadronic interactions; i.e., "color transparency". The use
of light-cone Fock methods to compute loop amplitudes is illustrated by the
example of the electron anomalous moment in QED. In other applications, such as
the computation of the axial, magnetic, and quadrupole moments of light nuclei,
the QCD relativistic Fock state description provides new insights which go well

Shigella sonnei genome sequencing and phylogenetic analysis indicate recent global dissemination from Europe
Shigella are human-adapted Escherichia coli that have gained the ability to invade the human gut mucosa and cause dysentery1,2, spreading efficiently via low-dose fecal-oral transmission3,4. Historically, S. sonnei has been predominantly responsible for dysentery in developed countries, but is now emerging as a problem in the developing world, apparently replacing the more diverse S. flexneri in areas undergoing economic development and improvements in water quality4-6. Classical approaches have shown S. sonnei is genetically conserved and clonal7. We report here whole-genome sequencing of 132 globally-distributed isolates. Our phylogenetic analysis shows that the current S. sonnei population descends from a common ancestor that existed less than 500 years ago and has diversified into several distinct lineages with unique characteristics. Our analysis suggests the majority of this diversification occurred in Europe, followed by more recent establishment of local pathogen populations in other continents predominantly due to the pandemic spread of a single, rapidly-evolving, multidrug resistant lineage
Spontaneous R-Parity Violation, Flavor Symmetry and Tribimaximal Mixing
We explore the possibility of spontaneous R parity violation in the context
of flavor symmetry. Our model contains singlet matter chiral superfields which are arranged as triplet of
and as well as few additional Higgs chiral superfields which are singlet
under MSSM gauge group and belong to triplet and singlet representation under
the flavor symmetry. R parity is broken spontaneously by the vacuum
expectation values of the different sneutrino fields and hence we have
neutrino-neutralino as well as neutrino-MSSM gauge singlet higgsino mixings in
our model, in addition to the standard model neutrino- gauge singlet neutrino,
gaugino-higgsino and higgsino-higgsino mixings. Because all of these mixings we
have an extended neutral fermion mass matrix. We explore the low energy
neutrino mass matrix for our model and point out that with some specific
constraints between the sneutrino vacuum expectation values as well as the MSSM
gauge singlet Higgs vacuum expectation values, the low energy neutrino mass
matrix will lead to a tribimaximal mixing matrix. We also analyze the potential
minimization for our model and show that one can realize a higher vacuum
expectation value of the singlet
sneutrino fields even when the other sneutrino vacuum expectation values are
extremely small or even zero.Comment: 18 page
The sensitivity of real-time PCR amplification targeting invasive Salmonella serovars in biological specimens
Background:
PCR amplification for the detection of pathogens in biological material is generally considered a rapid and informative diagnostic technique. Invasive Salmonella serovars, which cause enteric fever, can be commonly cultured from the blood of infected patients. Yet, the isolation of invasive Salmonella serovars from blood is protracted and potentially insensitive.
Methods:
We developed and optimised a novel multiplex three colour real-time PCR assay to detect specific target sequences in the genomes of Salmonella serovars Typhi and Paratyphi A. We performed the assay on DNA extracted from blood and bone marrow samples from culture positive and negative enteric fever patients.
Results:
The assay was validated and demonstrated a high level of specificity and reproducibility under experimental conditions. All bone marrow samples tested positive for Salmonella, however, the sensitivity on blood samples was limited. The assay demonstrated an overall specificity of 100% (75/75) and sensitivity of 53.9% (69/128) on all biological samples. We then tested the PCR detection limit by performing bacterial counts after inoculation into blood culture bottles.
Conclusions:
Our findings corroborate previous clinical findings, whereby the bacterial load of S. Typhi in peripheral blood is low, often below detection by culture and, consequently, below detection by PCR. Whilst the assay may be utilised for environmental sampling or on differing biological samples, our data suggest that PCR performed directly on blood samples may be an unsuitable methodology and a potentially unachievable target for the routine diagnosis of enteric fever. </p
Identifying and prioritizing strategies for comprehensive liver cancer control in Asia
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Liver cancer is both common and burdensome in Asia. Effective liver cancer control, however, is hindered by a complex etiology and a lack of coordination across clinical disciplines. We sought to identify strategies for inclusion in a comprehensive liver cancer control for Asia and to compare qualitative and quantitative methods for prioritization.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Qualitative interviews (N = 20) with international liver cancer experts were used to identify strategies using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis and to formulate an initial prioritization through frequency analysis. Conjoint analysis, a quantitative stated-preference method, was then applied among Asian liver cancer experts (N = 20) who completed 12 choice tasks that divided these strategies into two mutually exclusive and exhaustive subsets. Respondents' preferred plan was the primary outcome in a choice model, estimated using ordinary least squares (OLS) and logistic regression. Priorities were then compared using Spearman's Rho.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Eleven strategies were identified: <it>Access to treatments; Centers of excellence; Clinical education; Measuring social burden; Monitoring of at-risk populations; Multidisciplinary management; National guidelines; Public awareness; Research infrastructure; Risk-assessment and referral</it>; and <it>Transplantation infrastructure</it>. Qualitative frequency analysis indicated that <it>Risk-assessment and referral </it>(85%), <it>National guidelines </it>(80%) and <it>Monitoring of at-risk populations </it>(80%) received the highest priority, while conjoint analysis pointed to <it>Monitoring of at-risk populations </it>(p < 0.001), <it>Centers of excellence </it>(p = 0.002), and <it>Access to treatments </it>(p = 0.004) as priorities, while <it>Risk-assessment and referral </it>was the lowest priority (p = 0.645). We find moderate concordance between the qualitative and quantitative methods (rho = 0.20), albeit insignificant (p = 0.554), and a strong concordance between the OLS and logistic regressions (rho = 0.979; p < 0.0001).</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Identified strategies can be conceptualized as the ABCs of comprehensive liver cancer control as they focus on <it>Antecedents</it>, <it>Better care </it>and <it>Connections </it>within a national strategy. Some concordance was found between the qualitative and quantitative methods (e.g. <it>Monitoring of at-risk populations</it>), but substantial differences were also identified (e.g. qualitative methods gave highest priority to risk-assessment and referral, but it was the lowest for the quantitative methods), which may be attributed to differences between the methods and study populations, and potential framing effects in choice tasks. Continued research will provide more generalizable estimates of priorities and account for variation across stakeholders and countries.</p
Working with pain : sustainable work participation of workers with chronic nonspecific musculoskeletal pain
Dit proefschrift is een van de eerste studies specifiek gericht op mensen die blijven werken met chronische pijn aan het bewegingsapparaat. Unieke kennis over duurzame arbeidsparticipatie van werknemers met chronische pijn werd vergaard. Doel van dit promotieonderzoek was meer inzicht te krijgen in de groep mensen die werkt met pijn en te achterhalen hoe zij in staat zijn ondanks hun klachten te blijven werken. In het proefschrift staan kenmerken en determinanten beschreven van werknemers die doorwerken met chronische pijn, waardoor een completer beeld is ontstaan van arbeidsparticipatie bij mensen met chronische pijn aan het bewegingsapparaat. Uit de vergelijking van mensen die doorwerken ondanks chronische pijn en mensen met arbeidsverzuim die in revalidatiebehandeling komen met chronische pijn blijkt dat deze groepen op diverse factoren significant verschillen. In het onderzoek werd onder andere aangetoond dat de motivatie voor werk, zelfmanagementvaardigheden en het belang dat wordt toegekend aan pijn, belangrijke factoren zijn die werken met chronische pijn faciliteren. Chronische pijn op zichzelf is vaak niet de reden voor arbeidsverzuim, maar meestal spelen persoonlijke- en omgevingsfactoren daarin een beslissende rol. Deze factoren kunnen dienen als aangrijpingspunt voor het verhogen van duurzame inzetbaarheid en preventie van arbeidsverzuim van mensen met chronische pijn aan het bewegingsapparaat. De effectieve manier waarop deelnemende werknemers in het onderzoek met hun pijn omgingen en productief bleven, kan anderen inspireren aan het werk te blijven. Daarnaast biedt het onderzoek een nieuw referentiekader voor de bedrijfs-, verzekerings-, en revalidatiegeneeskunde.
This thesis was one of the first studies that focused specifically on people who continued work with chronic nonspecific musculoskeletal pain (CMP), and collected (identified) unique data concerning sustainable work participation of workers with CMP. It provides a large range of characteristics of workers with CMP who continued work despite pain, which has added to our understanding of sustainable work participation in people suffering from CMP. Comparison of workers who continued work with CMP with sick listed workers with CMP admitted for rehabilitation revealed that these groups differ significantly on several factors. In this thesis, evidence was found that the workers’ motivation to work, self-management skills, and the attributed importance of pain on their (working) lives are important factors to manage staying at work with CMP. It is recommended to be aware of the fact that CMP standing on itself is often not the reason for sick leave and disability, but regularly personal and environmental factors play an additional decisive role. Because these factors can be influenced, they offer opportunity to promote staying at work. In the process of guiding workers back to work, the results of the project ‘Working with pain’ may be used. The findings of this thesis potentially contribute to promotion of sustained work participation and prevention of sick-leave in workers with CMP. The effective way workers in this project coped with CMP and remained productive, may inspire others in their efforts to stay work. Finally, this thesis offers a new reference for rehabilitation-, occupational-,and insurance medicine.
Public Preferences for Forest Ecosystem Management in Japan with Emphasis on Species Diversity
We carried out online choice experiments (CE) to investigate what value Japanese individuals assign to rare versus familiar species in forest ecosystem, and to determine how preference heterogeneity arises. CE attributes comprised a forestry charge as the price attribute and rare versus familiar species of animals or plants as the good to be valued. Species numbers in a 5 km-mesh forest area were evaluated without the use of species names to focus purely on responses to numerical changes. Positional effects were also tested to validate results regarding alternatives and attributes other than the price attribute. A random parameter logit model was adopted to capture preferences for species diversity. After confirming that no positional effects existed, we found that (1) rare animals were valued more highly than rare plants, (2) familiar plants were assigned a positive value, but familiar animals were not assigned significant value at the mean parameter estimate, and (3) preference heterogeneities existed for all species. The sources of preference heterogeneity were analyzed with a latent class model having principal components of environmental attitudes. The influence of such attitudes was shown to be significant and suggested that attention should be paid to belief systems rather than solely demographics
Consensus guidelines for the use and interpretation of angiogenesis assays
The formation of new blood vessels, or angiogenesis, is a complex process that plays important roles in growth and development, tissue and organ regeneration, as well as numerous pathological conditions. Angiogenesis undergoes multiple discrete steps that can be individually evaluated and quantified by a large number of bioassays. These independent assessments hold advantages but also have limitations. This article describes in vivo, ex vivo, and in vitro bioassays that are available for the evaluation of angiogenesis and highlights critical aspects that are relevant for their execution and proper interpretation. As such, this collaborative work is the first edition of consensus guidelines on angiogenesis bioassays to serve for current and future reference
Multi-messenger observations of a binary neutron star merger
On 2017 August 17 a binary neutron star coalescence candidate (later designated GW170817) with merger time 12:41:04 UTC was observed through gravitational waves by the Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo detectors. The Fermi Gamma-ray Burst Monitor independently detected a gamma-ray burst (GRB 170817A) with a time delay of ~1.7 s with respect to the merger time. From the gravitational-wave signal, the source was initially localized to a sky region of 31 deg2 at a luminosity distance of 40+8-8 Mpc and with component masses consistent with neutron stars. The component masses were later measured to be in the range 0.86 to 2.26 Mo. An extensive observing campaign was launched across the electromagnetic spectrum leading to the discovery of a bright optical transient (SSS17a, now with the IAU identification of AT 2017gfo) in NGC 4993 (at ~40 Mpc) less than 11 hours after the merger by the One- Meter, Two Hemisphere (1M2H) team using the 1 m Swope Telescope. The optical transient was independently detected by multiple teams within an hour. Subsequent observations targeted the object and its environment. Early ultraviolet observations revealed a blue transient that faded within 48 hours. Optical and infrared observations showed a redward evolution over ~10 days. Following early non-detections, X-ray and radio emission were discovered at the transient’s position ~9 and ~16 days, respectively, after the merger. Both the X-ray and radio emission likely arise from a physical process that is distinct from the one that generates the UV/optical/near-infrared emission. No ultra-high-energy gamma-rays and no neutrino candidates consistent with the source were found in follow-up searches. These observations support the hypothesis that GW170817 was produced by the merger of two neutron stars in NGC4993 followed by a short gamma-ray burst (GRB 170817A) and a kilonova/macronova powered by the radioactive decay of r-process nuclei synthesized in the ejecta
