This paper presents a new integrated approach to the analysis of brake squeal modelling. It focuses on developing a validated thermo—mechanical finite element model by taking full account of the effect of thermal loading on the structural response of the brake. An integrated study involving time—dependent non—linear contact and a fully coupled transient thermal analysis are carried out to provide the contact and temperature distribution within the brake before executing an instability study using the complex eigenvalue technique. The results,in turn demonstrate the fugitive nature of brake squeal through the system eigenvalues that are extracted throughout the braking period. Internal Kinematics of Luminous Compact Blue Galaxies

We describe the dynamical properties which may be inferred from HST/STIS spectroscopic observations of luminous compact blue galaxies (LCBGs) between 0.1<z<0.7. While the sample is homogeneous in blue rest-frame color, small size and line-width, and high surface-brightness, their detailed morphology is eclectic. Here we determine the amplitude of rotation versus random, or disturbed motions of the ionized gas. This information affirms the accuracy of dynamical mass and M/L estimates from Keck integrated line-widths, and hence also the predictions of the photometric fading of these unusual galaxies. The resolved kinematics indicates this small subset of LCBGs are dynamically hot, and unlikely to be embedded in disk systems.Comment: To appear in "Starbursts: from 30 Doradus to Lyman Break Galaxies" 2005, eds. Tribo-oxidation of a brake friction couple under varying sliding conditions

    Get PDF
This study explores a common parameter that is used to describe the energy input into a friction pairing in pin-on-disc investigations, the pv-value. The impacts of multiple sliding speed, v, and contact pressure, p, combinations were investigated while keeping their product, the pv-value at a constant level. The chosen tests for this study consisted of steady-state drag braking applications on a small-scale test bench. The actual contact area on the friction material's surface was measured after the tests and correlated to the steady-state temperature, T, that was reached during testing. The tribological interface showed sensitivity towards the different sliding and loading conditions including a shift in oxidising states of the iron contents of the friction couples. The sliding and loading conditions were reversed after the transition of oxidising states in order to investigate their impact. The results show that the oxidising states dynamically react to the operating conditions, but the overall frictional performance of the system can remain at an altered level due to enduring changes in the actual contact area and the thermal response of the friction couple with the transition in oxidising states

Vectorial bending characteristics of long-period grating written in D-shaped fibre

    Get PDF
The curvature- or bend-sensing response of long-period gratings (LPG) UV-inscribed in D-shaped fiber has been investigated experimentally. Strong fiber orientation dependence of the spectral response when such LPGs are subjected to dynamic bending has been observed and is shown to form the basis for new vector sensors

Fiber Bragg gratings of type I in SMF-28 and B/Ge fibre and type IIA B/Ge fibre under gamma radiation up to 0.54 MGy

    Get PDF
The sensitivities of type I and IIA fibre Bragg gratings written to different reflectivities in SMF-28 and B/Ge fibres to ionizing radiation up to 0.54MGy are investigated. The Bragg wavelength shows a small and rapid increase at the start of irradiation followed by either a plateau (type I) or a decrease (type IIA)

Differential birefringence in Bragg gratings in multicore fiber under transverse stress

    Get PDF
We present experimental measurements of the peak splitting of the reflection spectra of fiber Bragg gratings as a result of birefringence induced by transverse loading of a multicore fiber. Measurements show that the splitting is a function of the applied load and the direction of the load relative to the azimuth of the fiber. A model for calculating the stress in the fiber that is due to an applied load is in good agreement with our experimental observations

Dynamic two-axis curvature measurement using multicore fiber Bragg gratings interrogated by arrayed waveguide gratings

    Get PDF
We describe the use of arrayed waveguide gratings (AWGs) in the interrogation of fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs) for dynamic strain measurement. The ratiometric AWG output was calibrated in a static deflection experiment over a ±200 με range. Dynamic strain measurement was demonstrated with a FBG in a conventional single-mode fiber mounted on the surface of a vibrating cantilever and on a piezoelectric actuator, giving a resolution of 0.5 με at 2.4 kHz. We present results of this technique extended to measure the dynamic differential strain between two FBG pairs within a multicore fiber. An arbitrary cantilever oscillation of the multicore fiber was determined from curvature measurements in two orthogonal axes at 1125 Hz with a resolution of 0.05 m-1. © 2006 Optical Society of America

Strain and temperature sensitivity of a single-mode polymer optical fiber

    Get PDF
We have measured the optical phase sensitivity of fiber based on poly(methyl methacrylate) under near-single-mode conditions at 632.8 nm wavelength. The elongation sensitivity is 131±3 × 105 rad m-1 and the temperature sensitivity is -212±26 rad m -1 K-1. These values are somewhat larger than those for silica fiber and are consistent with the values expected on the basis of the bulk polymer properties. © 2005 Optical Society of America

Radial deformation measurement of a cylinder under compression using multicore fibre

    Get PDF
A multicore fibre (MCF) sensor to measure the radial deformation of a compliant cylinder under compression is presented. The sensor is connectorised and need not be permanently bonded to the test object. A differential measurement technique using FBGs written into the MCF makes the sensor temperature insensitive. FBG measurement of axial strain of a cylinder under compression is also reported
