Reliability and Validity of a Hong Kong Chinese Version of the St George's Respiratory Questionnaire in Patients with COPD
AbstractThe St George's Respiratory Questionnaire (SGRQ) is a self-administered questionnaire designed to measure quality of life (QOL) covering three areas (symptoms, activity and impacts) in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). The aim of the present study was to develop a Chinese version of the SGRQ (SGRQ-HK) and assess its psychometric properties. A forward and back-translation method was used, which included professional and lay people. Psychometric and clinical evaluations included 54 patients with COPD (31 males: mean age, 71.22 ± 5.95 years; 23 females: mean age, 68.8 ± 8.64 years). An additional QOL questionnaire and clinical and physiological data were also collected. The correlation coefficient between âsymptomsâ and dyspnoea was 0.67, that between âactivityâ and the 6-minute walk test was â0.78, between âimpactsâ and âmental healthâ of the SF-36 Health Survey Mental Health Inventory was â0.62; and between âtotalâ and âgeneral healthâ of the SF-36 was â0.87. Cronbach's a ranged from 0.74 to 0.95 for the whole questionnaire and its three subscales. Test-retest reliability showed intraclass correlation coefficients of all the dimensions exceeding 0.70. The three-factor structure of the SGRQ-HK was established. In conclusion, the SGRQ-HK is reliable and valid and compares well with the original English version
Demonstration of the temporal matter-wave Talbot effect for trapped matter waves
We demonstrate the temporal Talbot effect for trapped matter waves using
ultracold atoms in an optical lattice. We investigate the phase evolution of an
array of essentially non-interacting matter waves and observe matter-wave
collapse and revival in the form of a Talbot interference pattern. By using
long expansion times, we image momentum space with sub-recoil resolution,
allowing us to observe fractional Talbot fringes up to 10th order.Comment: 17 pages, 7 figure
Pion, kaon, proton and anti-proton transverse momentum distributions from p+p and d+Au collisions at GeV
Identified mid-rapidity particle spectra of , , and
from 200 GeV p+p and d+Au collisions are reported. A
time-of-flight detector based on multi-gap resistive plate chamber technology
is used for particle identification. The particle-species dependence of the
Cronin effect is observed to be significantly smaller than that at lower
energies. The ratio of the nuclear modification factor () between
protons and charged hadrons () in the transverse momentum
range GeV/c is measured to be
(stat)(syst) in minimum-bias collisions and shows little
centrality dependence. The yield ratio of in minimum-bias d+Au
collisions is found to be a factor of 2 lower than that in Au+Au collisions,
indicating that the Cronin effect alone is not enough to account for the

Azimuthal anisotropy at RHIC: the first and fourth harmonics
We report the first observations of the first harmonic (directed flow, v_1),
and the fourth harmonic (v_4), in the azimuthal distribution of particles with
respect to the reaction plane in Au+Au collisions at the Relativistic Heavy Ion
Collider (RHIC). Both measurements were done taking advantage of the large
elliptic flow (v_2) generated at RHIC. From the correlation of v_2 with v_1 it
is determined that v_2 is positive, or {\it in-plane}. The integrated v_4 is
about a factor of 10 smaller than v_2. For the sixth (v_6) and eighth (v_8)

Novel genetic loci associated with hippocampal volume
The hippocampal formation is a brain structure integrally involved in episodic memory, spatial navigation, cognition and stress responsiveness. Structural abnormalities in hippocampal volume and shape are found in several common neuropsychiatric disorders. To identify the genetic underpinnings of hippocampal structure here we perform a genome-wide association study (GWAS) of 33,536 individuals and discover six independent loci significantly associated with hippocampal volume, four of them novel. Of the novel loci, three lie within genes (ASTN2, DPP4 and MAST4) and one is found 200 kb upstream of SHH. A hippocampal subfield analysis shows that a locus within the MSRB3 gene shows evidence of a localized effect along the dentate gyrus, subiculum, CA1 and fissure. Further, we show that genetic variants associated with decreased hippocampal volume are also associated with increased risk for Alzheimer's disease (rg =-0.155). Our findings suggest novel biological pathways through which human genetic variation influences hippocampal volume and risk for neuropsychiatric illness
Transverse-momentum correlations on from mean- fluctuations in Au-Au collisions at 200 GeV
We present first measurements of the pseudorapidity and azimuth
bin-size dependence of event-wise mean transverse momentum
fluctuations for Au-Au collisions at GeV. We invert that
dependence to obtain autocorrelations on differences
interpreted to represent velocity/temperature
distributions on (). The general form of the autocorrelations
suggests that the basic correlation mechanism is parton fragmentation. The
autocorrelations vary strongly with collision centrality, which suggests that
fragmentation is strongly modified by a dissipative medium in the more central
Au-Au collisions relative to peripheral or p-p collisions. \\Comment: 7 pages, 3 figure
Global, regional, and national burden of stroke and its risk factors, 1990â2019: a systematic analysis for the Global Burden of Disease Study 2019
Background
Regularly updated data on stroke and its pathological types, including data on their incidence, prevalence, mortality, disability, risk factors, and epidemiological trends, are important for evidence-based stroke care planning and resource allocation. The Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (GBD) aims to provide a standardised and comprehensive measurement of these metrics at global, regional, and national levels.
Methods
We applied GBD 2019 analytical tools to calculate stroke incidence, prevalence, mortality, disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs), and the population attributable fraction (PAF) of DALYs (with corresponding 95% uncertainty intervals [UIs]) associated with 19 risk factors, for 204 countries and territories from 1990 to 2019. These estimates were provided for ischaemic stroke, intracerebral haemorrhage, subarachnoid haemorrhage, and all strokes combined, and stratified by sex, age group, and World Bank country income level.
Findings
In 2019, there were 12·2 million (95% UI 11·0â13·6) incident cases of stroke, 101 million (93·2â111) prevalent cases of stroke, 143 million (133â153) DALYs due to stroke, and 6·55 million (6·00â7·02) deaths from stroke. Globally, stroke remained the second-leading cause of death (11·6% [10·8â12·2] of total deaths) and the third-leading cause of death and disability combined (5·7% [5·1â6·2] of total DALYs) in 2019. From 1990 to 2019, the absolute number of incident strokes increased by 70·0% (67·0â73·0), prevalent strokes increased by 85·0% (83·0â88·0), deaths from stroke increased by 43·0% (31·0â55·0), and DALYs due to stroke increased by 32·0% (22·0â42·0). During the same period, age-standardised rates of stroke incidence decreased by 17·0% (15·0â18·0), mortality decreased by 36·0% (31·0â42·0), prevalence decreased by 6·0% (5·0â7·0), and DALYs decreased by 36·0% (31·0â42·0). However, among people younger than 70 years, prevalence rates increased by 22·0% (21·0â24·0) and incidence rates increased by 15·0% (12·0â18·0). In 2019, the age-standardised stroke-related mortality rate was 3·6 (3·5â3·8) times higher in the World Bank low-income group than in the World Bank high-income group, and the age-standardised stroke-related DALY rate was 3·7 (3·5â3·9) times higher in the low-income group than the high-income group. Ischaemic stroke constituted 62·4% of all incident strokes in 2019 (7·63 million [6·57â8·96]), while intracerebral haemorrhage constituted 27·9% (3·41 million [2·97â3·91]) and subarachnoid haemorrhage constituted 9·7% (1·18 million [1·01â1·39]). In 2019, the five leading risk factors for stroke were high systolic blood pressure (contributing to 79·6 million [67·7â90·8] DALYs or 55·5% [48·2â62·0] of total stroke DALYs), high body-mass index (34·9 million [22·3â48·6] DALYs or 24·3% [15·7â33·2]), high fasting plasma glucose (28·9 million [19·8â41·5] DALYs or 20·2% [13·8â29·1]), ambient particulate matter pollution (28·7 million [23·4â33·4] DALYs or 20·1% [16·6â23·0]), and smoking (25·3 million [22·6â28·2] DALYs or 17·6% [16·4â19·0]).
Interpretation
The annual number of strokes and deaths due to stroke increased substantially from 1990 to 2019, despite substantial reductions in age-standardised rates, particularly among people older than 70 years. The highest age-standardised stroke-related mortality and DALY rates were in the World Bank low-income group. The fastest-growing risk factor for stroke between 1990 and 2019 was high body-mass index. Without urgent implementation of effective primary prevention strategies, the stroke burden will probably continue to grow across the world, particularly in low-income countries.publishedVersio
A study of CP violation in B-+/- -> DK +/- and B-+/- -> D pi(+/-) decays with D -> (KSK +/-)-K-0 pi(-/+) final states
A first study of CP violation in the decay modes B-+/- -> [(KSK +/-)-K-0 pi(-/+)](D)h(+/-) and B-+/- -> [(KSK +/-)-K-0 pi(-/+)](D)h(+/-), where h labels a K or pi meson and D labels a D-0 or (D) over bar (0) meson, is performed. The analysis uses the LHCb data set collected in pp collisions, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3 fb(-1). The analysis is sensitive to the CP-violating CKM phase gamma through seven observables: one charge asymmetry in each of the four modes and three ratios of the charge-integrated yields. The results are consistent with measurements of gamma using other decay modes
EuFeAs under high pressure: an antiferromagnetic bulk superconductor
We report the ac magnetic susceptibility and resistivity
measurements of EuFeAs under high pressure . By observing nearly
100% superconducting shielding and zero resistivity at = 28 kbar, we
establish that -induced superconductivity occurs at ~30 K in
EuFeAs. shows an anomalous nearly linear temperature dependence
from room temperature down to at the same . indicates that
an antiferromagnetic order of Eu moments with ~20 K persists
in the superconducting phase. The temperature dependence of the upper critical

A search for the decay
We search for the rare flavor-changing neutral-current decay in a data sample of 82 fb collected with the {\sl BABAR}
detector at the PEP-II B-factory. Signal events are selected by examining the
properties of the system recoiling against either a reconstructed hadronic or
semileptonic charged-B decay. Using these two independent samples we obtain a
combined limit of
at the 90% confidence level. In addition, by selecting for pions rather than
