    Effect of immediate all-digital restoration of single posterior implants: The SafetyCrown concept on patient-reported outcome measures, accuracy, and treatment time-A randomized clinical trial.

    OBJECTIVE The SafetyCrown workflow facilitates the immediate restoration of posterior single sites with the one-abutment/one-time concept. This randomized clinical trial aimed to assess the direct effect of immediate restoration on dental patient-reported outcomes (dPROs), feasibility, implant accuracy, and time. MATERIALS AND METHODS Participants with a single posterior edentulous site for late implant placement underwent optical impressions, shade selection, and cone beam computed tomography. After virtual treatment planning, they were randomized into the test group and the control group. For the test group, individual definitive hybrid abutments were prefabricated. The next step was a fully guided surgery with printed guides. After the implant was placed using guided surgery, the abutment was inserted. A chairside CAD/CAM workflow was used to provide the patient with a provisional restoration. Implants in the control group were left submerged to heal. Oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) was assessed using the OHIP-G14, and dPRO was measured using a 10-item visual analog scale (VAS) questionnaire. Additional measurements of implant accuracy and time were performed. Follow-up was performed 7 to 10 days after implant placement. RESULTS Thirty-nine participants with 45 restorations were included (test group: 23, control: 22). Immediate restoration was successful in 21 out of 23 implants (91.3%) in the test group. Both groups exhibited decreased OHRQoL without significant intergroup differences, while patient satisfaction was high overall. Test group participants perceived higher benefits and satisfaction with immediate loading than participants in the control group. Implant accuracy averaged 0.60 mm at the shoulder and 0.95 mm at the apex. Operative time was longer in the immediate loading group (61.9 min) than in the control group (32.1 min) (p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS Considering the limitations, the immediate restoration of late placed posterior implants using the described workflow proved feasible in 21 out of 23 cases. Both groups achieved high patient satisfaction with no differences in OHRQoL during the first week. Patients who received immediate loading rated the benefits very highly and were satisfied with the provisional restoration during the healing period

    Did population differences in human pelvic form evolve by drift or selection?

    Pelvic dimensions differ, on average, among modern human populations. Some recent studies have reported that population differences in pelvic form evolved mainly by neutral processes, without considerable natural selection. This is a surprising claim given the many important functions of the human pelvis. This article re-evaluates this claim through a review of the medical literature and a new analysis of the data from which these results were obtained. We show that variation in modern pelvic form correlates with the risks of obstructed labour, pelvic floor disorders such as incontinence and prolapse, and numerous orthopaedic disorders that impair walking. Comparative population studies also document adaptations of human body form and pelvic dimensions to climatic conditions. However, these various and partly antagonistic selective forces on the human pelvis are not homogeneous across populations. They depend not only on climatic differences, but also on maternal and foetal body size, pelvic floor tissue properties, diet, lifestyle and the resulting metabolic capacities, as well as on obstetric practices and health care, all of which vary across human populations. Given the relatively rapid evolution of polygenic quantitative traits, we propose that pelvic dimensions have evolved different "compromise solutions" in different populations in response to local selective regimes. The results from a reanalysis of a large published global dataset on human pelvic canal dimensions clearly support this view.En moyenne, les dimensions du bassin diffèrent entre les populations humaines modernes. De récentes études ont suggéré que les différences de forme du bassin entre populations ont évolué principalement par des processus neutres, sans effet notable de la sélection naturelle. Cette affirmation est surprenante, étant donné la multiplicité et l’importance des fonctions du bassin dans l’espèce humaine. Ici, nous ré-évaluons cette allégation par une revue de la littérature médicale et par une nouvelle analyse des données sur lesquelles ces résultats sont basés. Nous montrons que la variation de forme du bassin chez les humains modernes est corrélée avec les risques de dystocie (blocage physique du fœtus lors de l’accouchement), de troubles du plancher pelvien comme l’incontinence et la descente d’organes, ainsi que de nombreux troubles orthopédiques affectant la marche. Des études comparatives entre populations documentent également une adaptation de la forme du corps humain et des dimensions du bassin aux conditions climatiques. Cependant, ces forces sélectives variées et partiellement antagonistes s’exerçant sur le bassin humain ne sont pas homogènes entre populations. En plus des différences climatiques, elles dépendent de la taille corporelle de la mère et du fœtus, des propriétés des tissus du plancher pelvien, de l’alimentation, du mode de vie et des capacités métaboliques résultantes, ainsi que des pratiques obstétricales et de la santé, l’ensemble de ces facteurs étant variable selon la population. Étant donné l’évolution relativement rapide des traits quantitatifs polygéniques, nous faisons la proposition que les dimensions du bassin ont évolué en différentes "solutions de compromis" chez les diverses populations, en réponse à des régimes de sélection locaux.     New insights into the manual activities of individuals from the Phaleron cemetery (Archaic Athens, Greece)

    Until the early 5th century BC, Phaleron Bay was the main port of ancient Athens (Greece). On its shore, archaeologists have discovered one of the largest known cemeteries in ancient Greece, including a range of burial forms, simple pits, cremations, larnaces (clay tubs), and series of burials of male individuals who appear to have died violent deaths, referred to here as “atypical burials”. Reconstructing the osteobiographies of these individuals will help create a deeper understanding of the socio-political conditions preceding the rise of Classical Athens. Here, we assess the habitual manual behavior of the people of Archaic Phaleron (ca. 7th – 6th cent. BC), relying on a new and precise three-dimensional method for reconstructing physical activity based on hand muscle attachment sites. This approach has been recently validated on laboratory animal samples as well as on recent human skeletons with a detailed level of long-term occupational documentation (i.e., the mid-19th century Basel Spitalfriedhof sample). Our Phaleron sample consists of 48 adequately preserved hand skeletons, of which 14 correspond to atypical burials. Our results identified consistent differences in habitual manual behaviors between atypical burials and the rest. The former present a distinctive power-grasping tendency in most skeletons, which was significantly less represented in the latter (p-values of <0.01 and 0.03). Based on a comparison with the uniquely documented Basel sample (45 individuals), this entheseal pattern of the atypical burials was exclusively found in long-term heavy manual laborers. These findings reveal an important activity difference between burials typical for the Phaleron cemetery and atypical burials, suggesting that the latter were likely involved in distinctive, strenuous manual activities. The results of this pilot study comprise an important first step towards reconstructing the identity of these human skeletal remains. Future research can further elucidate the occupational profiles of these individuals through the discovery of additional well-preserved hand skeletons and by extending our analyses to other anatomical regions

    Effects of heat on cut mark characteristics.

    Cut marks on bones provide crucial information about tools used and their mode of application, both in archaeological and forensic contexts. Despite a substantial amount of research on cut mark analysis and the influence of fire on bones (shrinkage, fracture pattern, recrystallisation), there is still a lack of knowledge in cut mark analysis on burnt remains. This study provides information about heat alteration of cut marks and whether consistent features can be observed that allow direct interpretation of the implemented tools used. In a controlled experiment, cut marks (n=25) were inflicted on pig ribs (n=7) with a kitchen knife and examined using micro-CT and digital microscopy. The methods were compared in terms of their efficacy in recording cut marks on native and heat-treated bones. Statistical analysis demonstrates that floor angles and the maximum slope height of cuts undergo significant alteration, whereas width, depth, floor radius, slope, and opening angle remain stable. Micro-CT and digital microscopy are both suitable methods for cut mark analysis. However, significant differences in measurements were detected between both methods, as micro-CT is less accurate due to the lower resolution. Moreover, stabbing led to micro-fissures surrounding the cuts, which might also influence the alteration of cut marks

    We report on the status of efforts to improve the reinterpretation of searches and measurements at the LHC in terms of models for new physics, in the context of the LHC Reinterpretation Forum. We detail current experimental offerings in direct searches for new particles, measurements, technical implementations and Open Data, and provide a set of recommendations for further improving the presentation of LHC results in order to better enable reinterpretation in the future. We also provide a brief description of existing software reinterpretation frameworks and recent global analyses of new physics that make use of the current data

    Differential cross section measurements for the production of a W boson in association with jets in proton–proton collisions at √s = 7 TeV

    Measurements are reported of differential cross sections for the production of a W boson, which decays into a muon and a neutrino, in association with jets, as a function of several variables, including the transverse momenta (pT) and pseudorapidities of the four leading jets, the scalar sum of jet transverse momenta (HT), and the difference in azimuthal angle between the directions of each jet and the muon. The data sample of pp collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV was collected with the CMS detector at the LHC and corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 5.0 fb[superscript −1]. The measured cross sections are compared to predictions from Monte Carlo generators, MadGraph + pythia and sherpa, and to next-to-leading-order calculations from BlackHat + sherpa. The differential cross sections are found to be in agreement with the predictions, apart from the pT distributions of the leading jets at high pT values, the distributions of the HT at high-HT and low jet multiplicity, and the distribution of the difference in azimuthal angle between the leading jet and the muon at low values.United States.     Risk portfolio on modern finance has become increasingly technical, requiring the use of sophisticated mathematical tools in both research and practice. Since companies cannot insure themselves completely against risk, as human incompetence in predicting the future precisely that written in Al-Quran surah Luqman verse 34, they have to manage it to yield an optimal portfolio. The objective here is to minimize the variance among all portfolios, or alternatively, to maximize expected return among all portfolios that has at least a certain expected return. Furthermore, this study focuses on optimizing risk portfolio so called Markowitz MVO (Mean-Variance Optimization). Some theoretical frameworks for analysis are arithmetic mean, geometric mean, variance, covariance, linear programming, and quadratic programming. Moreover, finding a minimum variance portfolio produces a convex quadratic programming, that is minimizing the objective function ðð¥with constraintsð ð 𥠥 ðandð´ð¥ = ð. The outcome of this research is the solution of optimal risk portofolio in some investments that could be finished smoothly using MATLAB R2007b software together with its graphic analysis

    Juxtaposing BTE and ATE – on the role of the European insurance industry in funding civil litigation

    One of the ways in which legal services are financed, and indeed shaped, is through private insurance arrangement. Two contrasting types of legal expenses insurance contracts (LEI) seem to dominate in Europe: before the event (BTE) and after the event (ATE) legal expenses insurance. Notwithstanding institutional differences between different legal systems, BTE and ATE insurance arrangements may be instrumental if government policy is geared towards strengthening a market-oriented system of financing access to justice for individuals and business. At the same time, emphasizing the role of a private industry as a keeper of the gates to justice raises issues of accountability and transparency, not readily reconcilable with demands of competition. Moreover, multiple actors (clients, lawyers, courts, insurers) are involved, causing behavioural dynamics which are not easily predicted or influenced. Against this background, this paper looks into BTE and ATE arrangements by analysing the particularities of BTE and ATE arrangements currently available in some European jurisdictions and by painting a picture of their respective markets and legal contexts. This allows for some reflection on the performance of BTE and ATE providers as both financiers and keepers. Two issues emerge from the analysis that are worthy of some further reflection. Firstly, there is the problematic long-term sustainability of some ATE products. Secondly, the challenges faced by policymakers that would like to nudge consumers into voluntarily taking out BTE LEI
