Duality cascades and duality walls
We recast the phenomenon of duality cascades in terms of the Cartan matrix
associated to the quiver gauge theories appearing in the cascade. In this
language, Seiberg dualities for the different gauge factors correspond to Weyl
reflections. We argue that the UV behavior of different duality cascades
depends markedly on whether the Cartan matrix is affine ADE or not. In
particular, we find examples of duality cascades that can't be continued after
a finite energy scale, reaching a "duality wall", in terminology due to M.
Strassler. For these duality cascades, we suggest the existence of a UV
completion in terms of a little string theory.Comment: harvmac, 24 pages, 4 figures. v2: references added. v3: reference

Electroweak Symmetry Breaking in the DSSM
We study the theoretical and phenomenological consequences of modifying the
Kahler potential of the MSSM two Higgs doublet sector. Such modifications
naturally arise when the Higgs sector mixes with a quasi-hidden conformal
sector, as in some F-theory GUT models. In the Delta-deformed Supersymmetric
Standard Model (DSSM), the Higgs fields are operators with non-trivial scaling
dimension 1 < Delta < 2. The Kahler metric is singular at the origin of field
space due to the presence of quasi-hidden sector states which get their mass
from the Higgs vevs. The presence of these extra states leads to the fact that
even as Delta approaches 1, the DSSM does not reduce to the MSSM. In
particular, the Higgs can naturally be heavier than the W- and Z-bosons.
Perturbative gauge coupling unification, a large top quark Yukawa, and
consistency with precision electroweak can all be maintained for Delta close to
unity. Moreover, such values of Delta can naturally be obtained in
string-motivated constructions. The quasi-hidden sector generically contains
states charged under SU(5)_GUT as well as gauge singlets, leading to a rich,
albeit model-dependent, collider phenomenology.Comment: v3: 40 pages, 3 figures, references added, typos correcte
A Hybrid Higgs
We construct composite Higgs models admitting a weakly coupled Seiberg dual
description. We focus on the possibility that only the up-type Higgs is an
elementary field, while the down-type Higgs arises as a composite hadron. The
model, based on a confining SQCD theory, breaks supersymmetry and electroweak
symmetry dynamically and calculably. This simultaneously solves the \mu/B_\mu
problem and explains the smallness of the bottom and tau masses compared to the
top mass. The proposal is then applied to a class of models where the same
confining dynamics is used to generate the Standard Model flavor hierarchy by
quark and lepton compositeness. This provides a unified framework for flavor,
supersymmetry breaking and electroweak physics. The weakly coupled dual is used
to explicitly compute the MSSM parameters in terms of a few microscopic
couplings, giving interesting relations between the electroweak and soft
parameters. The RG evolution down to the TeV scale is obtained and salient
phenomenological predictions of this class of "single-sector" models are
discussed.Comment: 56 pages, 7 figures, v2: discussion on FCNCs and references added,

Constraints on Astro-unparticle Physics from SN 1987A
SN 1987A observations have been used to place constraints on the interactions
between standard model particles and unparticles. In this study we calculate
the energy loss from the supernovae core through scalar, pseudo scalar, vector,
pseudo vector unparticle emission from nuclear bremsstrahlung for degenerate
nuclear matter interacting through one pion exchange. In order to examine the
constraints on we considered the emission of scalar, pseudo
scalar, vector, pseudo vector and tensor through the pair annihilation process
. In addition we have re-examined other pair
annihilation processes. The most stringent bounds on the dimensionless coupling
constants for and are obtained from
nuclear bremsstrahlung process for the pseudo scalar and pseudo-vector
couplings and for
tensor interaction, the best limit on dimensionless coupling is obtained from
and we get .Comment: 12 pages, 2 postscript figure
Strong coupling, discrete symmetry and flavour
We show how two principles - strong coupling and discrete symmetry - can work
together to generate the flavour structure of the Standard Model. We propose
that in the UV the full theory has a discrete flavour symmetry, typically only
associated with tribimaximal mixing in the neutrino sector. Hierarchies in the
particle masses and mixing matrices then emerge from multiple strongly coupled
sectors that break this symmetry. This allows for a realistic flavour
structure, even in models built around an underlying grand unified theory. We
use two different techniques to understand the strongly coupled physics:
confinement in N=1 supersymmetry and the AdS/CFT correspondence. Both
approaches yield equivalent results and can be represented in a clear,
graphical way where the flavour symmetry is realised geometrically.Comment: 31 pages, 5 figures, updated references and figure
Physics searches at the LHC
With the LHC up and running, the focus of experimental and theoretical high
energy physics will soon turn to an interpretation of LHC data in terms of the
physics of electroweak symmetry breaking and the TeV scale. We present here a
broad review of models for new TeV-scale physics and their LHC signatures. In
addition, we discuss possible new physics signatures and describe how they can
be linked to specific models of physics beyond the Standard Model. Finally, we
illustrate how the LHC era could culminate in a detailed understanding of the
underlying principles of TeV-scale physics.Comment: 184 pages, 55 figures, 14 tables, hundreds of references; scientific

E-Glass Fiber Reinforced Composites in Dental Applications
Fiber reinforced composites (FRCs) are more and more widely applied in dentistry to substitute for metallic restorations: periodontal splints, fixed partial dentures, endodontic posts, orthodontic appliances, and some other indirect restorations. In general in FRCs, the fiber reinforcement provides the composite structure with better biomechanical performance due to their superior properties in tension and flexure. Nowadays, the E-glass fiber is most frequently used because of its chemical resistance and relatively low cost. Growing interest is being paid to enhance its clinical performance. Moreover, various techniques are utilized to reinforce the adhesion between the fiber and the matrix. Oral conditions set special requirements and challenges for the clinical applications of FRCs. The biomechanical properties of dental materials are of high importance in dentistry, and given this, there is on-going scientific interest to develop E-glass fiber reinforced composite systems. FRCs are generally biocompatible and their toxicity is not a concern. © 2011 The Author(s).published_or_final_versionSpringer Open Choice, 21 Feb 201
Decay of Z Boson into Photon and Unparticle
We study the decay of the standard model Z boson into unparticle plus a
single photon through a one-loop process. As in the anomaly type decay, only
the axial-vector part of the Z coupling matching with the vector unparticle
and/or the vector part of the Z coupling matching with the axial-vector
unparticle can give a nonzero contribution to the decay. We show that the
photon spectrum terminates at the end point in accord with Yang's theorem.
Existing data on single photon production at LEP I is used to constrain the
unparticle sector.Comment: 12 pages, 2 figures plus 1 tabl
