Integration of the OEE index and the Heijunka method: an analysis of a possible relationship

In the last decades, Lean Production has become a widely used concept among industries that aim to improve processes and eliminate waste. Associated with lean production, the efficiency in the use of materials and machines is gaining importance in the operational strategy of the companies. Considering the need of companies constantly investing resources and efforts to continuously improve their processes, applying techniques and new knowledge to make them more competitive, this article aims to highlight the efficiency gains (demonstrated by the OEE calculation) derived from the application of the method Heijunka in a service company. The case study was carried out in a service company, characterizing itself as a Drink Distribution Center, located in the Integrated Administrative Development Region (RIDE) in Pernambuco. From the calculated data, it was possible to perceive that it is possible to have better productivity derived from a better efficiency of the operations, as evidenced by Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE), overall efficiency index. This fact results, among other factors, from the leveling of production proposed by the Heijunka method

Perfil epidemiológico de hanseníase no sertão Pernambucano, Brasil / Epidemiological profile of hanseníase in sertão Pernambucano, Brazil

A Hanseníase é uma doença infecciosa crônica causada por Mycobacterium leprae, considerada um grave problema saúde pública mundial. O presente trabalho tem como objetivo traçar um perfil epidemiológico da Hanseníase no sertão pernambucano, tomando por base os dados eletrônicos do SINAN e DATASUS (ambos ligados ao Ministério da Saúde). A partir dessas fontes, realizou-se um estudo de série histórica observacional do tipo transversal dos casos notificados de Hanseníase entre os anos de 2006 a 2017. De acordo com os dados, observa-se que esse agravo apresentou um decréscimo no número de novos casos, na medida em que se constatava 43.642 casos no ano de 2006 contra 26.875 novos casos em 2017. Essa realidade, embora evidencie uma notável redução no número de novos casos de hanseníase, evoca a responsabilidade dos órgãos públicos de saúde no que tange à manutenção do controle desse agravo, assim como a criação de novas medidas que busquem a prevenção e a erradicação desse enfermo no território nacional.

Characterisation of microbial attack on archaeological bone

As part of an EU funded project to investigate the factors influencing bone preservation in the archaeological record, more than 250 bones from 41 archaeological sites in five countries spanning four climatic regions were studied for diagenetic alteration. Sites were selected to cover a range of environmental conditions and archaeological contexts. Microscopic and physical (mercury intrusion porosimetry) analyses of these bones revealed that the majority (68%) had suffered microbial attack. Furthermore, significant differences were found between animal and human bone in both the state of preservation and the type of microbial attack present. These differences in preservation might result from differences in early taphonomy of the bones. © 2003 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved
