    Diversity of Potassium Channels in Human Umbilical Artery Smooth Muscle Cells: A Review of Their Roles in Human Umbilical Artery Contraction

    Through their control of cell membrane potential, potassium (K(+)) channels are among the best known regulators of vascular tone. This article discusses the expression and function of K(+) channels in human umbilical artery smooth muscle cells (HUASMCs). We review the bibliographic reports and also present single-channel data recorded in freshly isolated cells. Electrophysiological properties of big conductance, voltage- and Ca(2+)-sensitive K(+) channel and voltage-dependent K(+) channels are clearly established in this vessel, where they are involved in contractile state regulation. Their role in the maintenance of membrane potential is an important control mechanism in the determination of the vessel diameter. Additionally, small conductance Ca(2+)-sensitive K(+) channels, 2-pore domains K(+) channels and inward rectifier K(+) channels also appear to be present in HUASMCs, while intermediate conductance Ca(2+)-sensitive K(+) channels and ATP-sensitive K(+) channels could not be identified. In both cases, additional investigation is necessary to reach conclusive evidence of their expression and/or functional role in HUASMCs.     Whole-Brain Models to Explore Altered States of Consciousness from the Bottom Up.

    The scope of human consciousness includes states departing from what most of us experience as ordinary wakefulness. These altered states of consciousness constitute a prime opportunity to study how global changes in brain activity relate to different varieties of subjective experience. We consider the problem of explaining how global signatures of altered consciousness arise from the interplay between large-scale connectivity and local dynamical rules that can be traced to known properties of neural tissue. For this purpose, we advocate a research program aimed at bridging the gap between bottom-up generative models of whole-brain activity and the top-down signatures proposed by theories of consciousness. Throughout this paper, we define altered states of consciousness, discuss relevant signatures of consciousness observed in brain activity, and introduce whole-brain models to explore the biophysics of altered consciousness from the bottom-up. We discuss the potential of our proposal in view of the current state of the art, give specific examples of how this research agenda might play out, and emphasize how a systematic investigation of altered states of consciousness via bottom-up modeling may help us better understand the biophysical, informational, and dynamical underpinnings of consciousness

    Diagnosis, risk factors and pathogenesis of preeclampsia

    A pré-eclâmpsia é uma doença da gestação que pode determinar restrição no crescimento fetal, prematuridade e, em casos mais graves, morte da mãe e do feto. Caracteriza-se por hipertensão arterial materna, proteinúria significativa (? 0,3g/24h), edema, vaso-constrição do leito vascular materno e conseqüente aumento da resistência vascular. Muitos estudos discutem fatores de risco, patogê-nese e critérios para o diagnóstico da pré-eclampsia, porém as variações na forma de apresentação e de evolução clínica dessa doença dificultam o entendimento dos resultados obtidos, freqüentemente conflitantes. A padronização diagnóstica e as pesquisas de base genética e molecular podem trazer, em um futuro próximo, maior compreensão dessa patologia. Neste artigo apresentamos uma revisão da literatura, com destaque para a relação entre pré-eclâmpsia e resistência à insulina.Preeclampsia is an illness of the gestation that involves fetal growth restriction, prematurity and, in more severe cases, death of mother and fetus. It is characterized by maternal hypertension, significant proteinuria (? 0,3g/24 h), edema, vasoconstriction of maternal blood vessels and consequent increase in vascular resistance. Many studies discuss risk factors, pathogenesis and diagnostic criteria of preeclampsia; however, there are large variations in presentation and clinical course of this illness, which make interpretation of fre-quently conflicting results difficult. Diagnostic standardization and research of genetic and molecular bases can bring a better understand-ing of this pathology in a near future.     Cutaneous approach in toxic epidermal necrolysis

    INTRODUCTION: Toxic epidermal necrolysis is a severe acute mucocutaneous condition usually induced by drugs associated with a high rate of morbidity and mortality. The care of the mucous lesions and skin and a multidisciplinary approach are very important for the prognosis and future sequelae. OBJECTIVES: To discuss the main aspects of this syndrome through a literature review illustrated by a clinical case. Methods: Review of the literature using the PubMed and SciELO online databases was performed. Articles in English, Portuguese, French, and Spanish were included and illustrated with a pediatric clinical case. The keywords used were as follows: "toxic epidermal necrolysis," "Stevens-Johnson overlap," "necrólise epidérmica tóxica," and "síndrome Stevens-Johnson." RESULTS: We presented data to guide the management of patients with toxic epidermal necrolysis for plastic surgeons, pediatricians, intensivists, dermatologists, and emergency physicians. The case treated had a favorable disease course without sequelae. CONCLUSION: A high level of suspicion is necessary for an adequate diagnosis and risk stratification, and early support measures and treatment should be performed by a multidisciplinary team trained to minimize damage and mortality

    Measurement of χ c1 and χ c2 production with s√ = 7 TeV pp collisions at ATLAS

    The prompt and non-prompt production cross-sections for the χ c1 and χ c2 charmonium states are measured in pp collisions at s√ = 7 TeV with the ATLAS detector at the LHC using 4.5 fb−1 of integrated luminosity. The χ c states are reconstructed through the radiative decay χ c → J/ψγ (with J/ψ → μ + μ −) where photons are reconstructed from γ → e + e − conversions. The production rate of the χ c2 state relative to the χ c1 state is measured for prompt and non-prompt χ c as a function of J/ψ transverse momentum. The prompt χ c cross-sections are combined with existing measurements of prompt J/ψ production to derive the fraction of prompt J/ψ produced in feed-down from χ c decays. The fractions of χ c1 and χ c2 produced in b-hadron decays are also measured

    Measurements of fiducial and differential cross sections for Higgs boson production in the diphoton decay channel at s√=8 TeV with ATLAS

    Measurements of fiducial and differential cross sections are presented for Higgs boson production in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of s√=8 TeV. The analysis is performed in the H → γγ decay channel using 20.3 fb−1 of data recorded by the ATLAS experiment at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. The signal is extracted using a fit to the diphoton invariant mass spectrum assuming that the width of the resonance is much smaller than the experimental resolution. The signal yields are corrected for the effects of detector inefficiency and resolution. The pp → H → γγ fiducial cross section is measured to be 43.2 ±9.4(stat.) − 2.9 + 3.2 (syst.) ±1.2(lumi)fb for a Higgs boson of mass 125.4GeV decaying to two isolated photons that have transverse momentum greater than 35% and 25% of the diphoton invariant mass and each with absolute pseudorapidity less than 2.37. Four additional fiducial cross sections and two cross-section limits are presented in phase space regions that test the theoretical modelling of different Higgs boson production mechanisms, or are sensitive to physics beyond the Standard Model. Differential cross sections are also presented, as a function of variables related to the diphoton kinematics and the jet activity produced in the Higgs boson events. The observed spectra are statistically limited but broadly in line with the theoretical expectations

    Search for squarks and gluinos in events with isolated leptons, jets and missing transverse momentum at s√=8 TeV with the ATLAS detector

    The results of a search for supersymmetry in final states containing at least one isolated lepton (electron or muon), jets and large missing transverse momentum with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider are reported. The search is based on proton-proton collision data at a centre-of-mass energy s√=8 TeV collected in 2012, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 20 fb−1. No significant excess above the Standard Model expectation is observed. Limits are set on supersymmetric particle masses for various supersymmetric models. Depending on the model, the search excludes gluino masses up to 1.32 TeV and squark masses up to 840 GeV. Limits are also set on the parameters of a minimal universal extra dimension model, excluding a compactification radius of 1/R c = 950 GeV for a cut-off scale times radius (ΛR c) of approximately 30
