    Multi-objective Optimization by Uncrowded Hypervolume Gradient Ascent

    Evolutionary algorithms (EAs) are the preferred method for solving black-box multi-objective optimization problems, but when gradients of the objective functions are available, it is not straightforward to exploit these efficiently. By contrast, gradient-based optimization is well-established for single-objective optimization. A single-objective reformulation of the multi-objective problem could therefore offer a solution. Of particular interest to this end is the recently introduced uncrowded hypervolume (UHV) indicator, which takes into account dominated solutions. In this work, we show that the gradient of the UHV can often be computed, which allows for a direct application of gradient ascent algorithms. We compare this new approach with two EAs for UHV optimization as well as with one gradient-based algorithm for optimizing the well-established hypervolume. On several bi-objective benchmarks, we find that gradient-based algorithms outperform the tested EAs by obtaining a better hypervolume with fewer evaluations whenever exact gradients of the multiple objective functions are available and in case of small evaluation budgets. For larger budgets, however, EAs perform similarly or better. We further find that, when finite differences are used to approximate the gradients of the multiple objectives, our new gradient-based algorithm is still competitive with EAs in most considered benchmarks.     Influence of a Conductive Material and Different Anaerobic Inocula on Biochemical Methane Potential of Substrates from Alcoholic Beverage Production

    The impact of a conductive material as powdered activated carbon (PAC) on the biochemical methane potential of whisky pot ale (PA) and brewery spent yeast (SY) was investigated. The test was carried out with three different types of anaerobic inocula: manure inoculum (MI), sewage sludge (SS) and granular sludge (GR). Brewery spent yeast produced partial (in sewage and granular sludge) and total (in manure inoculum) methanogenesis inhibition due to the toxicity of some of its constituents (hops extract). The inhibition was overcome by the supplementation of PAC, that improved significantly the anaerobic digestion process for SY, allowing to reach biochemical methane potential values between 657-699 L CH4 kg-1 VS and it reduced redox potential from 369 to 398 mV. The activated carbon did not improve the methane yields from whisky PA since microorganisms did not have difficulties to process this substrate; in fact, the redox potential slightly increased from 355 to 330 mV

    Urine biomarkers for Alzheimer's disease: A new opportunity for wastewater-based epidemiology?

    While Alzheimer's disease (AD) diagnosis, management, and care have become priorities for healthcare providers and researcher's worldwide due to rapid population aging, epidemiologic surveillance efforts are currently limited by costly, invasive diagnostic procedures, particularly in low to middle income countries (LMIC). In recent years, wastewater-based epidemiology (WBE) has emerged as a promising tool for public health assessment through detection and quantification of specific biomarkers in wastewater, but applications for non-infectious diseases such as AD remain limited. This early review seeks to summarize AD-related biomarkers and urine and other peripheral biofluids and discuss their potential integration to WBE platforms to guide the first prospective efforts in the field. Promising results have been reported in clinical settings, indicating the potential of amyloid β, tau, neural thread protein, long non-coding RNAs, oxidative stress markers and other dysregulated metabolites for AD diagnosis, but questions regarding their concentration and stability in wastewater and the correlation between clinical levels and sewage circulation must be addressed in future studies before comprehensive WBE systems can be developed.The authors would like to thank the Bioproduction Systems and MARTEC lab from Tecnologico de Monterrey, Mexico.     Search for squarks and gluinos in events with isolated leptons, jets and missing transverse momentum at s√=8 TeV with the ATLAS detector

    The results of a search for supersymmetry in final states containing at least one isolated lepton (electron or muon), jets and large missing transverse momentum with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider are reported. The search is based on proton-proton collision data at a centre-of-mass energy s√=8 TeV collected in 2012, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 20 fb−1. No significant excess above the Standard Model expectation is observed. Limits are set on supersymmetric particle masses for various supersymmetric models. Depending on the model, the search excludes gluino masses up to 1.32 TeV and squark masses up to 840 GeV. Limits are also set on the parameters of a minimal universal extra dimension model, excluding a compactification radius of 1/R c = 950 GeV for a cut-off scale times radius (ΛR c) of approximately 30

    Constraints on the χ_(c1) versus χ_(c2) polarizations in proton-proton collisions at √s = 8 TeV

    The polarizations of promptly produced χ_(c1) and χ_(c2) mesons are studied using data collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC, in proton-proton collisions at √s=8  TeV. The χ_c states are reconstructed via their radiative decays χ_c → J/ψγ, with the photons being measured through conversions to e⁺e⁻, which allows the two states to be well resolved. The polarizations are measured in the helicity frame, through the analysis of the χ_(c2) to χ_(c1) yield ratio as a function of the polar or azimuthal angle of the positive muon emitted in the J/ψ → μ⁺μ⁻ decay, in three bins of J/ψ transverse momentum. While no differences are seen between the two states in terms of azimuthal decay angle distributions, they are observed to have significantly different polar anisotropies. The measurement favors a scenario where at least one of the two states is strongly polarized along the helicity quantization axis, in agreement with nonrelativistic quantum chromodynamics predictions. This is the first measurement of significantly polarized quarkonia produced at high transverse momentum

    Search for pair production of vector-like top quarks in events with one lepton, jets, and missing transverse momentum in √s=13 TeV pp collisions with the ATLAS detector

    The results of a search for vector-like top quarks using events with exactly one lepton, at least four jets, and large missing transverse momentum are reported. The search is optimised for pair production of vector-like top quarks in the Z(→νν) t + X decay channel. LHC pp collision data at a centre-of-mass energy of √s=13 TeV recorded by the ATLAS detector in 2015 and 2016 are used, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 36.1 fb−1. No significant excess over the Standard Model expectation is seen and upper limits on the production cross-section of a vector-like T quark pair as a function of the T quark mass are derived. The observed (expected) 95% CL lower limits on the T mass are 870 GeV (890 GeV) for the weak-isospin singlet model, 1.05 TeV (1.06 TeV) for the weak-isospin doublet model and 1.16 TeV (1.17 TeV) for the pure Zt decay mode. Limits are also set on the mass as a function of the decay branching ratios, excluding large parts of the parameter space for masses below 1 TeV

    Search for long-lived charginos based on a disappearing-track signature in pp collisions at s √ =13 s=13 TeV with the ATLAS detector

    This paper presents a search for direct electroweak gaugino or gluino pair production with a chargino nearly mass-degenerate with a stable neutralino. It is based on an integrated luminosity of 36.1 fb−1 of pp collisions at s √ =13 s=13 TeV collected by the ATLAS experiment at the LHC. The final state of interest is a disappearing track accompanied by at least one jet with high transverse momentum from initial-state radiation or by four jets from the gluino decay chain. The use of short track segments reconstructed from the innermost tracking layers significantly improves the sensitivity to short chargino lifetimes. The results are found to be consistent with Standard Model predictions. Exclusion limits are set at 95% confidence level on the mass of charginos and gluinos for different chargino lifetimes. For a pure wino with a lifetime of about 0.2 ns, chargino masses up to 460 GeV are excluded. For the strong production channel, gluino masses up to 1.65 TeV are excluded assuming a chargino mass of 460 GeV and lifetime of 0.2 ns
