    Scaling critical behavior of superconductors at zero magnetic field

    We consider the scaling behavior in the critical domain of superconductors at zero external magnetic field. The first part of the paper is concerned with the Ginzburg-Landau model in the zero magnetic field Meissner phase. We discuss the scaling behavior of the superfluid density and we give an alternative proof of Josephson's relation for a charged superfluid. This proof is obtained as a consequence of an exact renormalization group equation for the photon mass. We obtain Josephson's relation directly in the form ρstν\rho_{s}\sim t^{\nu}, that is, we do not need to assume that the hyperscaling relation holds. Next, we give an interpretation of a recent experiment performed in thin films of YBa2Cu3O7δYBa_{2}Cu_{3}O_{7-\delta}. We argue that the measured mean field like behavior of the penetration depth exponent ν\nu' is possibly associated with a non-trivial critical behavior and we predict the exponents ν=1\nu=1 and α=1\alpha=-1 for the correlation lenght and specific heat, respectively. In the second part of the paper we discuss the scaling behavior in the continuum dual Ginzburg-Landau model. After reviewing lattice duality in the Ginzburg-Landau model, we discuss the continuum dual version by considering a family of scalings characterized by a parameter ζ\zeta introduced such that mh,02tζm_{h,0}^2\sim t^{\zeta}, where mh,0m_{h,0} is the bare mass of the magnetic induction field. We discuss the difficulties in identifying the renormalized magnetic induction mass with the photon mass. We show that the only way to have a critical regime with ν=ν2/3\nu'=\nu\approx 2/3 is having ζ4/3\zeta\approx 4/3, that is, with mh,0m_{h,0} having the scaling behavior of the renormalized photon mass.Comment: RevTex, 15 pages, no figures; the subsection III-C has been removed due to a mistak

    Large N study of extreme type II superconductors in a magnetic field

    Critical behavior of Ginzburg-Landau model coupled to massless Dirac fermions

    We point out interesting effects of additional massless Dirac fermions with N_F colors upon the critical behavior of the Ginzburg-Landau model. For increasing N_F, the model is driven into the type II regime of superconductivity.     Anomalous dimensions and phase transitions in superconductors

    The anomalous scaling in the Ginzburg-Landau model for the superconducting phase transition is studied. It is argued that the negative sign of the η\eta exponent is a consequence of a special singular behavior in momentum space. The negative sign of η\eta comes from the divergence of the critical correlation function at finite distances. This behavior implies the existence of a Lifshitz point in the phase diagram. The anomalous scaling of the vector potential is also discussed. It is shown that the anomalous dimension of the vector potential ηA=4d\eta_A=4-d has important consequences for the critical dynamics in superconductors. The frequency-dependent conductivity is shown to obey the scaling σ(ω)ξz2\sigma(\omega)\sim\xi^{z-2}.     Occurrence of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, microplastics and biofilms in Alqueva surface water at touristic spots

    Freshwater pollution is a huge concern. A study aiming to evaluate physico chemical characteristics, microbiota, occurrence of two groups of persistent environmental pollutants with similar chemical properties polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons PAHs and microplastics MPs in Alqueva s surface water was performed during 2021. Water samples were collected at three spots related to touristic activities two beaches and one marina during the Winter, Spring, Summer and Autumn seasons. In addition, the presence of biofilms on plastic and natural materials stone, wood vegetal materials were assessed and compared. Water quality based on physicochemical parameters was acceptable with a low eutrophication level. PAHs concentration levels were lower than the standard limits established for surface waters by international organizations. However, carcinogenic compounds were detected in two sampling locations, which can pose a problem for aquatic ecosystems. PAHs profiles showed significant differences when comparing the dry seasons with the rainy seasons, with a higher number of different compounds detected in Spring. Low molecular weigh compounds, usually associated with the atmospheric deposition and petroleum contamination, were more prevalent. MPs were detected in all samples except one during the Winter season. The polymers detected were poly methyl 2 methylpropenoate , polystyrene, polyethylene terephthalate, polyamide, polypropylene, styrene butadiene, polyvinyl chloride and low high density polyethylene with the last being the most frequent. Biofilms were more often detected on plastics than on natural materials. In addition, biofilms detected on plastics were more complex with higher microbial diversity e.g., bacteria, fungi yeast and phytoplancton organisms and richer in extrapolymeric material. Based on morphological analysis a good agreement between microbiota and microorganism present in the biofilms was found. Among microbiota were identified microorganisms previously linked to plastic and PAHs detoxification suggesting the need for further studies to evaluate the viability of using biofilms as part of a green bioremediation strategy to mitigate water pollutio

    Densidade, tamanho e distribuição estomática em 35 espécies de árvores na Amazônia Central

    Stomata are turgor-operated valves that control water loss and CO2 uptake during photosynthesis, and thereby water relation and plant biomass accumulation is closely related to stomatal functioning. The aims of this work were to document how stomata are distributed on the leaf surface and to determine if there is any significant variation in stomatal characteristics among Amazonian tree species, and finally to study the relationship between stomatal density (S D) and tree height. Thirty five trees (>17 m tall) of different species were selected. Stomatal type, density (S D), size (S S) and stomatal distribution on the leaf surface were determined using nail polish imprints taken from both leaf surfaces. Irrespective of tree species, stomata were located only on the abaxial surface (hypostomaty), with large variation in both S D and S S among species. S D ranged from 110 mm-2 in Neea altissima to 846 mm-2 in Qualea acuminata. However, in most species S D ranges between 271 and 543 mm-2, with a negative relationship between S D and S S. We also found a positive relationship between S D and tree height (r² = 0.14, p 17 m de altura) de diferentes espécies foram selecionadas. Tipo de complexo estomático, S D, tamanho (S S) e distribuição na superfície foliar foram determinados utilizando impressões de ambas as superfícies foliares com esmalte incolor. Independente da espécie, os estômatos foram encontrados apenas na superfície abaxial (hipoestomatia) com ampla variação na S D e no S S entre espécies. A densidade estomática variou de 110 mm-2 em Neea altissima a 846 mm-2 em Qualea acuminata. Entretanto, a maioria das espécies apresentou S D entre 271 e 543 mm-2, com uma relação negativa entre S D e S S. Observou-se uma relação positiva entre S D e altura arbórea (r² = 0.14, p < 0.01), não havendo relação entre S D e espessura foliar. Os tipos estomáticos mais comuns foram: anomocíticos (37%), seguidos de paracíticos (26%) e anisocíticos (11%). Concluiu-se que em espécies da Amazônia, a distribuição de estômatos na superfície foliar está mais relacionada a fatores genéticos de cada espécie do que a variações ambientais.     Global, regional, and national comparative risk assessment of 79 behavioural, environmental and occupational, and metabolic risks or clusters of risks, 1990-2015: A systematic analysis for the Global Burden of Disease Study 2015

    Background: The Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study 2015 provides an up-to-date synthesis of the evidence for risk factor exposure and the attributable burden of disease. By providing national and subnational assessments spanning the past 25 years, this study can inform debates on the importance of addressing risks in context. Methods: We used the comparative risk assessment framework developed for previous iterations of the Global Burden of Disease Study to estimate attributable deaths, disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs), and trends in exposure by age group, sex, year, and geography for 79 behavioural, environmental and occupational, and metabolic risks or clusters of risks from 1990 to 2015. This study included 388 risk-outcome pairs that met World Cancer Research Fund-defined criteria for convincing or probable evidence. We extracted relative risk and exposure estimates from randomised controlled trials, cohorts, pooled cohorts, household surveys, census data, satellite data, and other sources. We used statistical models to pool data, adjust for bias, and incorporate covariates. We developed a metric that allows comparisons of exposure across risk factors—the summary exposure value. Using the counterfactual scenario of theoretical minimum risk level, we estimated the portion of deaths and DALYs that could be attributed to a given risk. We decomposed trends in attributable burden into contributions from population growth, population age structure, risk exposure, and risk-deleted cause-specific DALY rates. We characterised risk exposure in relation to a Socio-demographic Index (SDI). Findings: Between 1990 and 2015, global exposure to unsafe sanitation, household air pollution, childhood underweight, childhood stunting, and smoking each decreased by more than 25%. Global exposure for several occupational risks, high body-mass index (BMI), and drug use increased by more than 25% over the same period. All risks jointly evaluated in 2015 accounted for 57·8% (95% CI 56·6–58·8) of global deaths and 41·2% (39·8–42·8) of DALYs. In 2015, the ten largest contributors to global DALYs among Level 3 risks were high systolic blood pressure (211·8 million [192·7 million to 231·1 million] global DALYs), smoking (148·6 million [134·2 million to 163·1 million]), high fasting plasma glucose (143·1 million [125·1 million to 163·5 million]), high BMI (120·1 million [83·8 million to 158·4 million]), childhood undernutrition (113·3 million [103·9 million to 123·4 million]), ambient particulate matter (103·1 million [90·8 million to 115·1 million]), high total cholesterol (88·7 million [74·6 million to 105·7 million]), household air pollution (85·6 million [66·7 million to 106·1 million]), alcohol use (85·0 million [77·2 million to 93·0 million]), and diets high in sodium (83·0 million [49·3 million to 127·5 million]). From 1990 to 2015, attributable DALYs declined for micronutrient deficiencies, childhood undernutrition, unsafe sanitation and water, and household air pollution; reductions in risk-deleted DALY rates rather than reductions in exposure drove these declines. Rising exposure contributed to notable increases in attributable DALYs from high BMI, high fasting plasma glucose, occupational carcinogens, and drug use. Environmental risks and childhood undernutrition declined steadily with SDI; low physical activity, high BMI, and high fasting plasma glucose increased with SDI. In 119 countries, metabolic risks, such as high BMI and fasting plasma glucose, contributed the most attributable DALYs in 2015. Regionally, smoking still ranked among the leading five risk factors for attributable DALYs in 109 countries; childhood underweight and unsafe sex remained primary drivers of early death and disability in much of sub-Saharan Africa. Interpretation: Declines in some key environmental risks have contributed to declines in critical infectious diseases. Some risks appear to be invariant to SDI. Increasing risks, including high BMI, high fasting plasma glucose, drug use, and some occupational exposures, contribute to rising burden from some conditions, but also provide opportunities for intervention. Some highly preventable risks, such as smoking, remain major causes of attributable DALYs, even as exposure is declining.     Caracterização citogenética para identificação dos níveis de ploidia em cinco espécies do gênero Mentha L.

    Neste trabalho foi feita a caracterização citogenética da: microsporogênese, tétrades, estimativa da viabilidade do pólen pelo método de coloração e contagem do número máximo de nucléolos por célula interfásica, para identificação dos níveis de ploidia, em cinco espécies do gênero Mentha L. Foram coletadas inflorescências em 30 plantas de cada espécie, em duas florações sucessivas, nos anos 2006 e 2007. As inflorescências foram tratadas em etanol-ácido acético (3:1), em temperatura ambiente durante seis horas, transferidas para álcool 70% (v/v) e conservadas em geladeira até análise. Nas análises da microsporogênese, tétrades e pólen o corante usado foi carmin propiônico 2% e na identificação dos nucléolos nitrato de prata (AgNO3). Os resultados demonstraram que as cinco espécies são poliplóides. M. crispa heptaplóide (2n=7x=84) com 11 nucléolos, M. spicata tetraplóide (2n=4x=48) com 8 nucléolos, M.x gentilis pentaplóide (2n=5x=60) com 12 nucleólos, M. piperita e M.x piperita ambas hexaplóides (2n=6x=72) com 8 e 9 nucléolos respectivamente. M. spicata e M. crispa mantiveram as mais altas porcentagens de células normais na microsporogênese, na formação de tétrades e na estimativa da viabilidade do pólen por coloração, sugerindo maior estabilidade meiótica quando comparados aos demais poliplóides estudados

    O experimento foi realizado com o objetivo de determinar a relação metionina+cistina digestível:lisina digestível (met+cis:lis) para suínos machos castrados, selecionados geneticamente para deposição de carne magra na carcaça, sob suplementação com ractopamina (RAC) na fase de terminação. Foram utilizados 64 suínos com peso inicial de 84,68 ± 1,34 kg, distribuídos em delineamento experimental de blocos ao acaso. Os tratamentos consistiram de quatro dietas com relações de 0,54; 0,58; 0,62 e 0,66 de met+cis:lis suplementadas com RAC, oito repetições e dois animais por unidade experimental, durante um período de 28 dias. As relações met+cis:lis não influenciaram o consumo de ração, o ganho de peso diário, a conversão alimentar, a espessura de toucinho, a quantidade de carne magra, o peso da carcaça, a porcentagem de carne magra e o rendimento de carcaça dos suínos. As relações met+cis:lis influenciaram de forma quadrática as concentrações de colesterol total no lombo e de forma linear as concentrações de colesterol no toucinho. O menor teor de colesterol total foi observado nos suínos alimentados com a dieta com relação 0,66 met+cis:lis. Em suínos de 85 a 109 kg sob suplementação com ractopamina, a relação 0,54 met+cis:lis atende às exigências para melhor desempenho e melhores características de carcaça, enquanto, para menores níveis de colesterol no lombo e no toucinho, a relação é de 0,66 met+cis:lis.<br>The experiment was carried out to determine digestible methionine + cystine: digestible lysine (Met + Cys/Lys) ratio for barrows selected for deposition of lean meat in the carcass supplemented with ractopamine (RAC) in the finishing phase. Sixty-four barrows with 84.68 ± 1.34 kg BW was allotted to an experimental randomized block design, fed diets containing four Met + Cys/Lys ratio (0.54, 0.58, 0.62 and 0.66) supplemented with ractopamine, eight replications, during a period of 28 days. Met + Cys/Lys did not affect feed intake, average daily gain, feed conversion, fat thickness, lean meat amount, carcass weight, lean meat percentage and carcass yield of pigs. Met + Cys/Lys ratio influence quadraticaly the concentrations of total cholesterol in the loin and linearly the cholesterol concentrations in the subcutaneous fat. The lowest levels of total cholesterol were observed in pigs fed diet with 0.66 Met + Cys/Lys ratio. In pigs from 85 to 109 kg supplemented with ractopamine, the 0.54 Met + Cys/Lys ratio meets the requirement for better performance and better carcass traits, while to lower the cholesterol levels in the loin and subcutaneous fat the requirement is 0.66 Met + Cys/Lys ratio
