Basic Differences in Pitch, Intensity, and Time Between Good and Poor Voices During Speech
This investigation involves the photography of pitch, intensity, and duration changes in about 80 poor speaking voices and 60 good speaking voices to ascertain basic differences that will indicate procedures for remedial purposes. The voices studied were the best and the poorest among 970 freshmen at the University of Iowa as rated and described by speech pathologists of the university staff. Shear critical R/C columns under increasing axial load
Structural elements in old reinforced concrete (R/C) frame buildings are often prone to shear or flexure-shear failure, which can eventually lead to loss of axial load capacity of vertical elements and initiate vertical progressive collapse of a building. An experimental investigation of shear and flexure-shear critical R/C elements subjected to increasing axial load is reported herein. The focus is on the effect of vertical load redistribution from axially failing columns on the non-linear (pre- and post-peak) response of neighboring shear-dominated members. The test results along with an analysis of the recorded deformation, strength, stiffness and energy dissipation characteristics shed light on the performance of sub-standard columns under constant and increasing axial load subsequent, or just prior, to failing in shear, thus providing useful insights into the assessment of existing R/C structures
Towards a better future for Canadians with bipolar disorder:principles and implementation of a community-based participatory research model
The Collaborative RESearch Team to study psychosocial factors in bipolar disorder (CREST.BD) is a multidisciplinary network dedicated to advancing science and practice around psychosocial issues associated with bipolar disorder (BD), improving the care and wellness of people living with bipolar disorder, and strengthening services and supports for these individuals. CREST.BD specializes in community-based participatory research, in which research is conducted as a partnership between researchers and community members. This article describes the evolution of the CREST.BD network and CREST.BD’s commitment to community-based participatory research in bipolar disorder research. Examples of CREST.BD projects using community-based participatory research to study stigma, quality of life, psychosocial interventions, and creativity in bipolar disorder are highlighted, and opportunities and challenges of engaging in community-based participatory research in bipolar disorder specifically and the mental health field more broadly are discussed. This article demonstrates how CBPR can be used to enhance the relevance of research practices and products through community engagement, and how community-based participatory research can enrich knowledge exchange and mobilization
Association Between Raised Inflammatory Markers and Cognitive Decline in Elderly People With Type 2 Diabetes: The Edinburgh Type 2 Diabetes Study
OBJECTIVE-To determine whether circulating levels of the inflammatory markers C-reactive protein (CRP), interleukin (IL)-6, and tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-alpha are associated with cognitive ability and estimated lifetime cognitive decline in an elderly population with type 2 diabetes. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS-A cross-sectional study of 1,066 men and women aged 60-75 years with type 2 diabetes and living in Lothian, Scotland (the Edinburgh Type 2 Diabetes Study), was performed. Seven cognitive tests were used to measure abilities in memory, nonverbal reasoning, information processing speed, executive function, and mental flexibility. The results were used to derive a general intelligence factor (g). A vocabulary-based test was administered as an estimate of peak prior cognitive ability. Results on the cognitive tests were assessed for statistical association with inflammatory markers measured in a venous blood sample at the time of cognitive testing. RESULTS-Higher IL-6 and TNF-alpha levels were associated with poorer age- and sex-adjusted scores on the majority of the individual cognitive tests. They were also associated with g using standardized regression coefficients -0.074 to -0.173 (P < 0.05). After adjusting for vocabulary, education level, cardiovascular dysfunction, duration of diabetes, and glycemic control, R,6 remained associated with three of the cognitive tests and with g. CONCLUSIONS-In this representative population of people with type 2 diabetes, elevated circulating levels of inflammatory markers were associated with poorer cognitive ability. Seasonal melting and the formation of sedimentary rocks on Mars, with predictions for the Gale Crater mound
A model for the formation and distribution of sedimentary rocks on Mars is
proposed. The rate-limiting step is supply of liquid water from seasonal
melting of snow or ice. The model is run for a O(10^2) mbar pure CO2
atmosphere, dusty snow, and solar luminosity reduced by 23%. For these
conditions snow only melts near the equator, and only when obliquity >40
degrees, eccentricity >0.12, and perihelion occurs near equinox. These
requirements for melting are satisfied by 0.01-20% of the probability
distribution of Mars' past spin-orbit parameters. Total melt production is
sufficient to account for aqueous alteration of the sedimentary rocks. The
pattern of seasonal snowmelt is integrated over all spin-orbit parameters and
compared to the observed distribution of sedimentary rocks. The global
distribution of snowmelt has maxima in Valles Marineris, Meridiani Planum and
Gale Crater. These correspond to maxima in the sedimentary-rock distribution.
Higher pressures and especially higher temperatures lead to melting over a
broader range of spin-orbit parameters. The pattern of sedimentary rocks on
Mars is most consistent with a Mars paleoclimate that only rarely produced
enough meltwater to precipitate aqueous cements and indurate sediment. The
results suggest intermittency of snowmelt and long globally-dry intervals,
unfavorable for past life on Mars. This model makes testable predictions for
the Mars Science Laboratory rover at Gale Crater. Gale Crater is predicted to

Metabolism within the tumor microenvironment and its implication on cancer progression: an ongoing therapeutic target
Since reprogramming energy metabolism is considered a new hallmark of cancer, tumor metabolism is again in the spotlight of cancer research. Many studies have been carried out and many possible therapies have been developed in the last years. However, tumor cells are not alone. A series of extracellular components and stromal cells, such as endothelial cells, cancer-associated fibroblasts, tumor-associated macrophages and tumor-infiltrating T cells, surround tumor cells in the so-called tumor microenvironment. Metabolic features of these cells are being studied in deep in order to find relationships between metabolism within the tumor microenvironment and tumor progression. Moreover, it cannot be forgotten that tumor growth is able to modulate host metabolism and homeostasis, so that tumor microenvironment is not the whole story. Importantly, the metabolic switch in cancer is just a consequence of the flexibility and adaptability of metabolism and should not be surprising. Treatments of cancer patients with combined therapies including anti-tumor agents with those targeting stromal cell metabolism, anti-angiogenic drugs and/or immunotherapy are being developed as promising therapeutics.Mª Carmen Ocaña is recipient of a predoctoral FPU grant from the Spanish Ministry of Education, Culture and Sport. Whey protein lowers blood pressure and improves endothelial function and lipid biomarkers in adults with prehypertension and mild hypertension: results from the chronic Whey2Go randomized 1,2 controlled trial
Background: Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) are the greatest cause of death globally, and their reduction is a key public-health target. High blood pressure (BP) affects 1 in 3 people in the United Kingdom, and previous studies have shown that milk consumption is associated with lower BP.
Objective: We investigated whether intact milk proteins lower 24-h ambulatory blood pressure (AMBP) and other risk markers of CVD.
Design: The trial was a double-blinded, randomized, 3-way–crossover, controlled intervention study. Forty-two participants were randomly assigned to consume 2 × 28 g whey protein/d, 2 × 28 g Ca caseinate/d, or 2 × 27 g maltodextrin (control)/d for 8 wk separated by a 4-wk washout. The effects of these interventions were examined with the use of a linear mixed-model ANOVA.
Results: Thirty-eight participants completed the study. Significant reductions in 24-h BP [for systolic blood pressure (SBP): −3.9 mm Hg; for diastolic blood pressure (DBP): −2.5 mm Hg; P = 0.050 for both)] were observed after whey-protein consumption compared with control intake. After whey-protein supplementation compared with control intake, peripheral and central systolic pressures [−5.7 mm Hg (P = 0.007) and −5.4 mm Hg (P = 0.012), respectively] and mean pressures [−3.7 mm Hg (P = 0.025) and −4.0 mm Hg (P = 0.019), respectively] were also lowered. Flow-mediated dilation (FMD) increased significantly after both whey-protein and calcium-caseinate intakes compared with control intake [1.31% (P < 0.001) and 0.83% (P = 0.003), respectively]. Although both whey protein and calcium caseinate significantly lowered total cholesterol [−0.26 mmol/L (P = 0.013) and −0.20 mmol/L (P = 0.042), respectively], only whey protein decreased triacylglycerol (−0.23 mmol/L; P = 0.025) compared with the effect of the control. Soluble intercellular adhesion molecule 1 and soluble vascular cell adhesion molecule 1 were reduced after whey protein consumption (P = 0.011) and after calcium-caseinate consumption (P = 0.039), respectively, compared with after control intake.
Conclusions: The consumption of unhydrolyzed milk proteins (56 g/d) for 8 wk improved vascular reactivity, biomarkers of endothelial function, and lipid risk factors. Whey-protein supplementation also lowered 24-h ambulatory SBP and DBP. These results may have important implications for public health. This trial was registered at clinicaltrials.gov as NCT02090842
