    Spectral analysis and a closest tree method for genetic sequences

    We describe a new method for estimating the evolutionary tree linking a collection of species from their aligned four-state genetic sequences. This method, which can be adapted to provide a branch-and-bound algorithm, is statistically consistent provided the sequences have evolved according to a standard stochastic model of nucleotide mutation.     Painting with sound: the kaleidoscopic world of Lance Sieveking, a British Radio Modernist

    In the late 1920s, British Radio became briefly and creatively entwined with a broader modernist culture. Largely through a series of spectacular programmes such as The Kaleidoscope (1928), made by the producer Lance Sieveking, the BBC started to develop an ‘art’ of sound. This episode has generally been passed over in histories of modernism and broadcasting: at best, it has been seen as a brief and whimsical piece of formal experimentation. But through examining Sieveking’s private papers, this article shows that this new art of sound was rich in meanings and symbolism, and had a wider influence than has hitherto been assumed. Sieveking drew heavily on his own life, which encompassed imprisonment and flying during the First World War, and a glittering array of social acquaintances, which connected him with the most advanced artistic thinking. This led him to find ways of representing in sound the subjective mental experiences and jumble of memories that so fascinated modernist artists in an age influenced by popular Freudianism. Sieveking’s life and writing also shows how he drew boldly from the visual language of experimental silent cinema at a critical moment in its own development. In creating a complex montage style for radio, Sieveking also anticipated some of the aesthetic devices that would be deployed in the coming era of sound on film. Sieveking and his programmes therefore illustrate a particular moment of British cultural history when the creative boundaries between different media were especially porous, with highly creative results

    Rethinking Time Allocation of Egyptian Females

    The present research explores for the first time to our best knowledge the extremely biased division of labor within Egyptian households. Time activities in respect of paid and unpaid work are an important aspect of this study. The classical dichotomy of "work in the market" versus "leisure" may serve as a good approximation of the role the male plays in the production activity of the household but does gross injustice to the female since it overlooks the whole time she spends, outside the market, on domestic activities. And, studying the females' invisible unpaid work is crucial since it remains the female's main occupation. Time use profiles are constructed using the Egyptian time use data available, only for females, in the Egyptian Labor Market and Panel Surveys of 1998 and 2006. The empirical exercise consists in, on the one hand-analyzing the main features of Egyptian females' time allocation relying on both cross-sectional and longitudinal analysis. On the other hand, we estimate a Propensity Score Matching model in order to evaluate the effect of marriage on females market and domestic labor supplies.Time Allocation, domestic production, descriptive analysis, propensity score matching, Egypt.

    Increasing the Efficiency and Productivity in the Production of Low Voltage Switchboard Using Resource Constrained Project Scheduling

    Purpose: This research was made with the aim to give a scheduling proposal for the assembly activity and the proposal to allocate those activities into available resources using the resource-constrained project scheduling. Design/methodology/approach: The research begins with the problem exposition in the existing system on the Assembly Department of panel manufacturer company. To overcome the problem, several scheduling alternatives are formulated to yield better productivity. The performance of proposed system using RCPS is assessed using simulation method. Considering the circumstance of demand rate, the scenarios chosen are based on the parameter such as product departure cycle time, resource utilization, product output, and number of resource required. Findings: The scheduling alternatives provides the better arrangement of work elements in the assembly activity, especially for the product that represent the highest demand rate. For further research, the paper gives encouragement so that the application of RCPS can be used broader in the manufacturing area. Research limitations/implications: Although the findings were addressed to improve the existing system on the Assembly Department, the practical application haven’t been undergone and the performance assessment only based on the simulation method. Practical implications: By implementing the proposed scheduling, the company will experience several benefits. First, the company could increase its productivity by better utilization of its resources. Second, based on the simulation result, the company could avoid the backorder option while dealing with the high demand rate, and even can fully maximize its resource utilization without adding more worker or apply the overtime policy. Finally, the proposed scheduling that converted into the work instruction could help the company to perform the knowledge transfer from the existing worker or resigned worker to the newly-hired worker. Originality/value: The outcome of the research could become the guidance for other companies which have similar assembly system to apply the same method. This is the best paper that represents the application of RCPS in the large-sized component assemblies, where the walking worker is responsible for carrying tasks to each unmoved unit.Peer Reviewe

    Light Scattering in Transparent Glass Ceramics

    Transparent glass ceramic materials, with microstructures comprised of dispersed nanocrystallites in a residual glass matrix, offer the prospect of nonlinear optical properties. However, good transparency requires low optical scattering and low atomic absorption. The attenuation of light due to scattering (turbidity) will depend upon the difference in refractive index of the two phases and the size and distribution of crystals in the glass. Here, we model the glass ceramic as a late-stage phase-separated structure, and compute scattering in this model. We find that the turbidity follows a k^8 R^7 relationship, where k is the wavevector of light in the glass ceramic and R is the average radius of the crystals in the glass.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure

    Land Use Intensity Module: Land Use in Rural New Zealand Version 1

    This document outlines the development of the dynamic functions and simple algorithms that make up the Land Use in Rural New Zealand (LURNZ) land-use intensity module. The module includes stocking rate functions for dairy, sheep, and beef livestock; fertiliser intensity functions for dairy and sheep/beef; and algorithms for the evolution of the age classes of the plantation forestry estate, and of reverting scrubland. This module is designed so that: (1) output from models of rural production and rural land use can be compared using the land-use intensity functions as conversion factors; (2) output from the land use module of LURNZ can be converted into the implied levels of rural activities that can be directly related to certain environmental impacts.     Rethinking the Redistribution Effects of Trade Liberalization in Egypt: A Microsimulation Analysis

    This paper aims at evaluating the liberalization policies effects on inequality in Egypt with respect to gender, region and qualification level. No previous studies in Egypt, to our best knowledge, have used the Microsimulation analysis which is a good tool that allows such an evaluation and determines the redistribution aspects of macro policies. The latter consists of linking macroeconomic changes to the micro level of the economy i.e. the individual level. A Computable General Equilibrium model (CGE) is first estimated for a maximum tariff rate of 10%. And, wages and employment changes resulted from the CGE are replicated, in a second stage, into our micro data. Results show that liberalization policies have important impacts on inequalities among the Egyptian population in general. Inequality has decreased among males and females as well as among different regions of the Egyptian society but has increased among high-skilled and low-skilled workers. Results of the present research have important policy implications that have to be considered.Trade liberalization; Egypt; CGE
