    We describe a silicon microstrip detector interleaved with segments of a beryllium oxide target which was used in the FOCUS photoproduction experiment at Fermilab.     We study the decay of Ds meson into final states involving a Ks and report the discovery of Cabibbo suppressed decay modes Ds -> Kspi-pi+pi+ (179 +/- 36 events) and Ds -> Kspi+ (113 +/-26 events). The branching ratios for the new modes are Gamma(Ds -> Kspi-pi+pi+)/Gamma(Ds -> KsK-pi+pi+) = 0.18 +/- 0.04 +/- 0.05 and Gamma(Ds -> Kspi+)/Gamma(Ds -> KsK+) = 0.104 +/- 0.024 +/- 0.013.Comment: 11 pages, 6 figure

    We present a search for a charmed pentaquark decaying strongly to D()pD^{(*)-}p. Finding no evidence for such a state, we set limits on the cross section times branching ratio relative to DD^{*-} and DD^- under particular assumptions about the production mechanism.Comment: To be published in Physics Letters

    Study of the D^0 \to pi^-pi^+pi^-pi^+ decay

    Using data from the FOCUS (E831) experiment at Fermilab, we present new measurements for the Cabibbo-suppressed decay mode D0ππ+ππ+D^0 \to \pi^-\pi^+\pi^-\pi^+. We measure the branching ratio Γ(D0π+ππ+π)/Γ(D0Kπ+ππ+)=0.0914±0.0018±0.0022\Gamma(D^0 \to\pi^+\pi^- \pi^+\pi^-)/\Gamma(D^0 \to K^-\pi^+\pi^-\pi^+) = 0.0914 \pm 0.0018 \pm 0.0022. An amplitude analysis has been performed, a first for this channel, in order to determine the resonant substructure of this decay mode. The dominant component is the decay D0a1(1260)+πD^0 \to a_1(1260)^+ \pi^-, accounting for 60% of the decay rate. The second most dominant contribution comes from the decay D0ρ(770)0ρ(770)0D^0 \to \rho(770)^0\rho(770)^0, with a fraction of 25%. We also study the a1(1260)a_1(1260) line shape and resonant substructure. Using the helicity formalism for the angular distribution of the decay D0ρ(770)0ρ(770)0D^0 \to \rho(770)^0\rho(770)^0, we measure a longitudinal polarization of PL=(71±4±2)P_L = (71 \pm 4\pm 2)%.Comment: 38 pages, 8 figures. accepted for publication in Physical Review

    Dalitz plot analysis of D_s+ and D+ decay to pi+pi-pi+ using the K-matrix formalism

    FOCUS results from Dalitz plot analysis of D_s+ and D+ to pi+pi-pi+ are presented. The K-matrix formalism is applied to charm decays for the first time to fully exploit the already existing knowledge coming from the light-meson spectroscopy experiments. In particular all the measured dynamics of the S-wave pipi scattering, characterized by broad/overlapping resonances and large non-resonant background, can be properly included. This paper studies the extent to which the K-matrix approach is able to reproduce the observed Dalitz plot and thus help us to understand the underlying dynamics.     Reconstruction and regional significance of the Coire Breac palaeoglacier, Glen Esk, eastern Grampian Highlands, Scotland

    We present a glaciological and climatic reconstruction of a former glacier in Coire Breac, an isolated cirque within the Eastern Grampian plateau of Scotland, 5 km from the Highland edge. Published glacier reconstructions of presumed Younger Dryas-age glaciers in this area show that equilibrium line altitudes decreased steeply towards the east coast, implying a maritime glacial environment. Extrapolation of the ELA trend surface implies that glaciers should have existed in suitable locations on the plateau, a landscape little modified by glaciation. In Coire Breac, a 0.35 km2 cirque glacier existed with an equilibrium line altitude of 487 ± 15 m above present sea level. The equilibrium line altitude matches closely the extrapolated regional equilibriumline altitude trend surface for Younger Dryas Stadial glaciers. The mean glacier thickness of 24 m gives an ice volume of 7.8 x 106 m3, and a maximum basal shear stress of c. 100 kPa-1. Ablation gradient was c. -0.0055 m m-1, with a mean July temperature at the equilibrium line altitude of c. 5.1°C. The reconstruction implies an arctic maritime climate of low precipitation with local accumulation enhanced by blown snow, which may explain the absence of other contemporary glaciers nearby. Reconstructed ice flow lines show zones of flow concentration around the lower ice margin which help to explain the distribution of depositional facies associated with a former debris cover which may have delayed eventual glacier retreat. No moraines in the area have been dated, so palaeoclimatic interpretations remain provisional, and a pre-Lateglacial Interstadial age cannot be ruled out

    Explicit processing of verbal and spatial features during letter-location binding modulates oscillatory activity of a fronto-parietal network.

    The present study investigated the binding of verbal and spatial features in immediate memory. In a recent study, we demonstrated incidental and asymmetrical letter-location binding effects when participants attended to letter features (but not when they attended to location features) that were associated with greater oscillatory activity over prefrontal and posterior regions during the retention period. We were interested to investigate whether the patterns of brain activity associated with the incidental binding of letters and locations observed when only the verbal feature is attended differ from those reflecting the binding resulting from the controlled/explicit processing of both verbal and spatial features. To achieve this, neural activity was recorded using magnetoencephalography (MEG) while participants performed two working memory tasks. Both tasks were identical in terms of their perceptual characteristics and only differed with respect to the task instructions. One of the tasks required participants to process both letters and locations. In the other, participants were instructed to memorize only the letters, regardless of their location. Time–frequency representation of MEG data based on the wavelet transform of the signals was calculated on a single trial basis during the maintenance period of both tasks. Critically, despite equivalent behavioural binding effects in both tasks, single and dual feature encoding relied on different neuroanatomical and neural oscillatory correlates. We propose that enhanced activation of an anterior–posterior dorsal network observed in the task requiring the processing of both features reflects the necessity for allocating greater resources to intentionally process verbal and spatial features in this task

    Proximity effect at superconducting Sn-Bi2Se3 interface

    We have investigated the conductance spectra of Sn-Bi2Se3 interface junctions down to 250 mK and in different magnetic fields. A number of conductance anomalies were observed below the superconducting transition temperature of Sn, including a small gap different from that of Sn, and a zero-bias conductance peak growing up at lower temperatures. We discussed the possible origins of the smaller gap and the zero-bias conductance peak. These phenomena support that a proximity-effect-induced chiral superconducting phase is formed at the interface between the superconducting Sn and the strong spin-orbit coupling material Bi2Se3.Comment: 7 pages, 8 figure

    Formation of dense partonic matter in relativistic nucleus-nucleus collisions at RHIC: Experimental evaluation by the PHENIX collaboration

    Extensive experimental data from high-energy nucleus-nucleus collisions were recorded using the PHENIX detector at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC). The comprehensive set of measurements from the first three years of RHIC operation includes charged particle multiplicities, transverse energy, yield ratios and spectra of identified hadrons in a wide range of transverse momenta (p_T), elliptic flow, two-particle correlations, non-statistical fluctuations, and suppression of particle production at high p_T. The results are examined with an emphasis on implications for the formation of a new state of dense matter. We find that the state of matter created at RHIC cannot be described in terms of ordinary color neutral hadrons.Comment: 510 authors, 127 pages text, 56 figures, 1 tables, LaTeX.     Search for Λc+pK+π\Lambda_c^+ \to p K^+ \pi^- and Ds+K+K+πD_s^+ \to K^+ K^+ \pi^- Using Genetic Programming Event Selection

    We apply a genetic programming technique to search for the double Cabibbo suppressed decays Λc+pK+π\Lambda_c^+ \to p K^+ \pi^- and Ds+K+K+πD_s^+ \to K^+ K^+ \pi^-. We normalize these decays to their Cabibbo favored partners and find BR(\text{BR}(\Lambda_c^+ \to p K^+ \pi^-)/BR()/\text{BR}(\Lambda_c^+ \to p K^- \pi^+)=(0.05±0.26±0.02)) = (0.05 \pm 0.26 \pm 0.02)% and BR(\text{BR}(D_s^+ \to K^+ K^+ \pi^-)/BR()/\text{BR}(D_s^+ \to K^+ K^- \pi^+)=(0.52±0.17±0.11)) = (0.52\pm 0.17\pm 0.11)% where the first errors are statistical and the second are systematic. Expressed as 90% confidence levels (CL), we find <0.46< 0.46 % and <0.78 < 0.78% respectively. This is the first successful use of genetic programming in a high energy physics data analysis.Comment: 10 page
