The occurrence and characterization of Campylobacter jejuni and C. coli in organic pigs and their outdoor environment
The occurrence and species distribution of thermophilic Campylobacter was investigated in organic outdoor pigs. An increased exposure of outdoor pigs to C. jejuni from the environment may cause a shift from a normal dominance of C. coli to more C. jejuni, which may imply a concern of reduced food safety.
Bacteriological methods for determination of Campylobacter excretion level were combined with colony-blot hybridization and real-time PCR for specific detection of C. jejuni in pigs. Campylobacter was isolated from pigs (n = 47), paddock environment (n = 126) and wildlife (n = 44), identified to species by real-time PCR and sub-typed by serotyping (Penner) and pulse-field gel electrophorsis (PFGE) genotyping.
All pigs excreted Campylobacter (103â107 CFU g1 faeces) from the age of 8â13-weeks old. C. jejuni was found in 29% of pigs in three consecutive trials and always in minority to C. coli (0.3â46%). C. jejuni and C. coli were isolated from 10% and 29% of the environmental samples, respectively, while crow-birds and rats harboured C. jejuni. Individual pigs hosted several strains (up to nine serotypes). The paddock environment was contaminated with C. coli serotypes similar to pig isolates, while most of the C. jejuni serotypes differed. C. jejuni isolates of different origin comprised few similar serotypes, just one identical genotype was common between pigs, environment and birds.
In conclusion, the occurrence of C. jejuni varied considerably between the three groups of outdoor pigs. Furthermore, transfer of C. jejuni to the outdoor pigs from the nearby environment was not predominant according to the subtype dissimilarities of the obtained isolates
Detecting the Most Distant (z>7) Objects with ALMA
Detecting and studying objects at the highest redshifts, out to the end of
Cosmic Reionization at z>7, is clearly a key science goal of ALMA. ALMA will in
principle be able to detect objects in this redshift range both from high-J
(J>7) CO transitions and emission from ionized carbon, [CII], which is one of
the main cooling lines of the ISM. ALMA will even be able to resolve this
emission for individual targets, which will be one of the few ways to determine
dynamical masses for systems in the Epoch of Reionization. We discuss some of
the current problems regarding the detection and characterization of objects at

Ensuring organization-intervention fit for a participatory organizational intervention to improve food service workersâ health and wellbeing: Workplace organizational health study
Objective: Food-service workersâ health and wellbeing is impacted by their jobs and work environments. Formative research methods were used to explore working conditions impacting workersâ health to inform intervention planning and implementation and to enhance the interventionâs âfitâ to the
organization.
Methods: Four qualitative methods (worker focus groups; manager interviews; worksite observations; multi-stakeholder workshop) explored in-depth and then prioritized working conditions impacting workersâ health as targets for an intervention.
Results: Prioritized working conditions included: ergonomics; work intensity; career development and job enrichment. Data revealed necessary intervention mechanisms to enhance intervention implementation: worker and management communication infrastructure; employee participation in
intervention planning and implementation; tailored worksite strategies; and ensuring leadership commitment.
Conclusions: These targeted, comprehensive methods move away from a typical focus on generic working conditions, e.g. job demands and physical work environment, to explore those conditions unique to an organization. Thereby, enhancing âintervention-fitâ at multiple levels within the company context
Meta-analysis of genome-wide association studies of anxiety disorders.
Anxiety disorders (ADs), namely generalized AD, panic disorder and phobias, are common, etiologically complex conditions with a partially genetic basis. Despite differing on diagnostic definitions based on clinical presentation, ADs likely represent various expressions of an underlying common diathesis of abnormal regulation of basic threat-response systems. We conducted genome-wide association analyses in nine samples of European ancestry from seven large, independent studies. To identify genetic variants contributing to genetic susceptibility shared across interview-generated DSM-based ADs, we applied two phenotypic approaches: (1) comparisons between categorical AD cases and supernormal controls, and (2) quantitative phenotypic factor scores (FS) derived from a multivariate analysis combining information across the clinical phenotypes. We used logistic and linear regression, respectively, to analyze the association between these phenotypes and genome-wide single nucleotide polymorphisms. Meta-analysis for each phenotype combined results across the nine samples for over 18â000 unrelated individuals. Each meta-analysis identified a different genome-wide significant region, with the following markers showing the strongest association: for case-control contrasts, rs1709393 located in an uncharacterized non-coding RNA locus on chromosomal band 3q12.3 (P=1.65 Ă 10(-8)); for FS, rs1067327 within CAMKMT encoding the calmodulin-lysine N-methyltransferase on chromosomal band 2p21 (P=2.86 Ă 10(-9)). Exploring the interstellar medium of NGC 891 at millimeter wavelengths using the NIKA2 camera
In the framework of the IMEGIN Large Program, we used the NIKA2 camera on the
IRAM 30-m telescope to observe the edge-on galaxy NGC 891 at 1.15 mm and 2 mm
and at a FWHM of 11.1" and 17.6", respectively. Multiwavelength data enriched
with the new NIKA2 observations fitted by the HerBIE SED code (coupled with the
THEMIS dust model) were used to constrain the physical properties of the ISM.
Emission originating from the diffuse dust disk is detected at all wavelengths
from mid-IR to mm, while mid-IR observations reveal warm dust emission from
compact HII regions. Indications of mm excess emission have also been found in
the outer parts of the galactic disk. Furthermore, our SED fitting analysis
constrained the mass fraction of the small (< 15 Angstrom) dust grains. We
found that small grains constitute 9.5% of the total dust mass in the galactic
plane, but this fraction increases up to ~ 20% at large distances (|z| > 3 kpc)

Identification of common genetic risk variants for autism spectrum disorder
Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a highly heritable and heterogeneous group of neurodevelopmental phenotypes diagnosed in more than 1% of children. Common genetic variants contribute substantially to ASD susceptibility, but to date no individual variants have been robustly associated with ASD. With a marked sample-size increase from a unique Danish population resource, we report a genome-wide association meta-analysis of 18,381 individuals with ASD and 27,969 controls that identified five genome-wide-significant loci. Leveraging GWAS results from three phenotypes with significantly overlapping genetic architectures (schizophrenia, major depression, and educational attainment), we identified seven additional loci shared with other traits at equally strict significance levels. Dissecting the polygenic architecture, we found both quantitative and qualitative polygenic heterogeneity across ASD subtypes. These results highlight biological insights, particularly relating to neuronal function and corticogenesis, and establish that GWAS performed at scale will be much more productive in the near term in ASD.Peer reviewe
Measurement of the cross section for isolated-photon plus jet production in pp collisions at âs=13 TeV using the ATLAS detector
The dynamics of isolated-photon production in association with a jet in protonâproton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV are studied with the ATLAS detector at the LHC using a dataset with an integrated luminosity of 3.2 fbâ1. Photons are required to have transverse energies above 125 GeV. Jets are identified using the anti- algorithm with radius parameter and required to have transverse momenta above 100 GeV. Measurements of isolated-photon plus jet cross sections are presented as functions of the leading-photon transverse energy, the leading-jet transverse momentum, the azimuthal angular separation between the photon and the jet, the photonâjet invariant mass and the scattering angle in the photonâjet centre-of-mass system. Tree-level plus parton-shower predictions from Sherpa and Pythia as well as next-to-leading-order QCD predictions from Jetphox and Sherpa are compared to the measurements
