Augmented reality-enhanced navigation in endoscopic sinus surgery: A prospective, randomized, controlled clinical trial
Objective: Endoscopic sinus surgery represents the gold standard for surgical treatment of chronic sinus diseases. Thereby, navigation systems can be of distinct use. In our study, we tested the recently developed KARL STORZ NAV1 SinusTracker navigation software that incorporates elements of augmented reality (AR) to provide a better preoperative planning and guidance during the surgical procedure. Methods: One hundred patients with chronic sinus disease were operated on using either a conventional navigation software (n = 52, nonâAR, control group) or a navigation software incorporating AR elements (n = 48, AR, intervention group). Incidence of postoperative complications, duration of surgery, surgeonâreported benefit from the navigation system and patientâreported postoperative rehabilitation were assessed. Results: The surgeons reported a higher benefit during surgery, used the navigation system for more surgical steps and spent longer time with preoperative image analysis when using the AR system as compared with the nonâAR system. No significant differences were seen in terms of postoperative complications, target registration error, operation time and postoperative rehabilitation. Conclusion:
The AR enhanced navigation software shows a high acceptance by sinus surgeons in different stages of surgical training and offers potential benefits during surgery without affecting the duration of the operation or the incidence of postoperative complications
Timing of eating across ten European countries - results from the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC) calibration study
Objective To examine timing of eating across ten European countries. Design Cross-sectional analysis of the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC) calibration study using standardized 24 h diet recalls collected during 1995-2000. Eleven predefined food consumption occasions were assessed during the recall interview. We present time of consumption of meals and snacks as well as the later:earlier energy intake ratio, with earlier and later intakes defined as 06.00-14.00 and 15.00-24.00 hours, respectively. Type III tests were used to examine associations of sociodemographic, lifestyle and health variables with timing of energy intake. Setting Ten Western European countries. Subjects In total, 22 985 women and 13 035 men aged 35-74 years (n 36 020). Results A south-north gradient was observed for timing of eating, with later consumption of meals and snacks in Mediterranean countries compared with Central and Northern European countries. However, the energy load was reversed, with the later:earlier energy intake ratio ranging from 0 center dot 68 (France) to 1 center dot 39 (Norway) among women, and from 0 center dot 71 (Greece) to 1 center dot 35 (the Netherlands) among men. Among women, country, age, education, marital status, smoking, day of recall and season were all independently associated with timing of energy intake (all PPeer reviewe
A search for ttÌ resonances using lepton-plus-jets events in proton-proton collisions at âs = 8 TeV with the ATLAS detector
A search for new particles that decay into top quark pairs is reported. The search is performed with the ATLAS experiment at the LHC using an integrated luminosity of 20.3 fbâÂč of proton-proton collision data collected at a centre-of-mass energy of âs=8 TeV. The lepton-plus-jets final state is used, where the top pair decays to W+bWâbÌ, with one W boson decaying leptonically and the other hadronically. The invariant mass spectrum of top quark pairs is examined for local excesses or deficits that are inconsistent with the Standard Model predictions. No evidence for a top quark pair resonance is found, and 95% confidence-level limits on the production rate are determined for massive states in benchmark models. The upper limits on the cross-section times branching ratio of a narrow ZâČ boson decaying to top pairs range from 4.2 pb to 0.03 pb for resonance masses from 0.4 TeV to 3.0 TeV. A narrow leptophobic topcolour ZâČ boson with mass below 1.8 TeV is excluded. Upper limits are set on the cross-section times branching ratio for a broad colour-octet resonance with Î/m = 15% decaying to ttÌ. These range from 4.8 pb to 0.03 pb for masses from 0.4 TeV to 3.0 TeV. A Kaluza-Klein excitation of the gluon in a Randall-Sundrum model is excluded for masses below 2.2 TeV
Measurement of the charge asymmetry in highly boosted top-quark pair production in âs=8 TeV pp collision data collected by the ATLAS experiment
In the ppâtt process the angular distributions of top and anti-top quarks are expected to present a subtle difference, which could be enhanced by processes not included in the Standard Model. This Letter presents a measurement of the charge asymmetry in events where the top-quark pair is produced with a large invariant mass. The analysis is performed on 20.3 fb-1 of pp collision data at âs=8TeV collected by the ATLAS experiment at the LHC, using reconstruction techniques specifically designed for the decay topology of highly boosted top quarks. The charge asymmetry in a fiducial region with large invariant mass of the top-quark pair (mtt>0.75 TeV) and an absolute rapidity difference of the top and anti-top quark candidates within -2<|yt|-|yt|<2 is measured to be 4.2±3.2%, in agreement with the Standard Model prediction at next-to-leading order. A differential measurement in three tt- mass bins is also presented

Differential translational regulation of IRE-containing mRNAs in Drosophila melanogaster by endogenous IRP and a constitutive human IRP1 mutant
Insects, like vertebrates, express iron regulatory proteins (IRPs) that may regulate proteins in cellular iron storage and energy metabolism. Two mRNAs, an unspliced form of ferritin H mRNA and succinate dehydrogenase subunit b (SDHb) mRNA, are known to comprise an iron responsive element (IRE) in their 5âČ-untranslated region making them susceptible to translational repression by IRPs at low iron levels. We have investigated the effect of wild-type human IRP1 (hIRP1) and the constitutively active mutant hIRP1-S437 in transgenic Drosophila melanogaster. Endogenous Drosophila IRE-binding activity was readily detected in gel retardation assays. However, translational repression assessed by polysome gradients was only visible for unspliced IRE-containing ferritin H mRNA, but not for SDHb mRNA. Upon expression of exogenous hIRP1-S437 both mRNAs were strongly repressed. This correlated with a diminished survival rate of adult flies with hIRP1 and complete lethality with hIRP1-S437. We conclude that constitutive IRP1 expression is deleterious to fly survival, probably due to the essential function of SDHb or proteins encoded by yet unidentified target mRNA
