    PTEN expression is a strong predictor of survival in mesothelioma patients

    Background: Malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM) is a highly aggressive tumour with poor prognosis and limited response to therapy. MPM is characterised by complex chromosomal aberrations, including chromosome 10 losses. The tumour suppressor gene phosphatase and tensin homologue deleted from chromosome 10 (PTEN) located on chromosome 10q23 plays an important role in different cancer, but its relevance for MPM is unclear. Patients and methods: In the present tissue microarray-based study, 341 MPM were studied for PTEN expression by immunohistochemistry using a monoclonal mouse PTEN antibody. Expression levels were semiquantitatively scored (negative, weak, moderate, strong). Expression of PTEN was correlated to overall survival. Results: Clinical data from 206 patients were available. One hundred and five patients were stage T4 and 92 patients presented with regional and mediastinal lymph node metastasis. Loss of PTEN expression was observed in 62% of the cases. The survival time was correlated to PTEN expression in 126 cases with complete follow-up data. Comparing any PTEN expression versus no expression, median survival time was significantly longer (log rank test p=0.0001) in patients with PTEN expression (15.5 months; 95% CI: 3.8; 27.2 vs 9.7 months; 95% CI: 7.9; 11.7). Cox regression analysis revealed an association between PTEN expression and survival (p=0.003) independently from the histological subtype (p=0.7). Conclusion: PTEN is an independent prognostic biomarker in mesothelioma patients. The frequent loss of expression of the tumour suppressor gene PTEN suggests involvement of the PI3K-AKT/protein kinase B (PKB) pathway in MPMs, which may be relevant for future mesothelioma treatmen

    Nessi: An EEG-Controlled Web Browser for Severely Paralyzed Patients

    We have previously demonstrated that an EEG-controlled web browser based on self-regulation of slow cortical potentials (SCPs) enables severely paralyzed patients to browse the internet independently of any voluntary muscle control. However, this system had several shortcomings, among them that patients could only browse within a limited number of web pages and had to select links from an alphabetical list, causing problems if the link names were identical or if they were unknown to the user (as in graphical links). Here we describe a new EEG-controlled web browser, called Nessi, which overcomes these shortcomings. In Nessi, the open source browser, Mozilla, was extended by graphical in-place markers, whereby different brain responses correspond to different frame colors placed around selectable items, enabling the user to select any link on a web page. Besides links, other interactive elements are accessible to the user, such as e-mail and virtual keyboards, opening up a wide range of hypertext-based applications

    On the Mass and Width of the Z-boson and Other Relativistic Quasistable Particles

    The ambiguity in the definition for the mass and width of relativistic resonances is discussed, in particular for the case of the Z-boson. This ambiguity can be removed by requiring that a resonance's width Γ\Gamma (defined by a Breit-Wigner lineshape) and lifetime τ\tau (defined by the exponential law) always and exactly fulfill the relation Γ=/τ\Gamma = \hbar/\tau. To justify this one needs relativistic Gamow vectors which in turn define the resonance's mass M_R as the real part of the square root ResR\rm{Re}\sqrt{s_R} of the S-matrix pole position s_R. For the Z-boson this means that MRMZ26MeVM_R \approx M_Z - 26{MeV} and ΓRΓZ1.2MeV\Gamma_R \approx \Gamma_Z-1.2{MeV} where M_Z and ΓZ\Gamma_Z are the values reported in the particle data tables.Comment: 23 page

    Machine studies for the development of storage cells at the ANKE facility of COSY

    We present a measurement of the transverse intensity distributions of the COSY proton beam at the target interaction point at ANKE at the injection energy of 45 MeV, and after acceleration at 2.65 GeV. At 2.65 GeV, the machine acceptance was determined as well. From the intensity distributions the beam size is determined, and together with the measured machine acceptance, the dimensions of a storage cell for the double-polarized experiments with the polarized internal gas target at the ANKE spectrometer are specified. An optimum storage cell for the ANKE experiments should have dimensions of 15mm x 20mm x 390mm (vertical x horizontal x longitudinal), whereby a luminosity of about 2.5*10^29 cm^-2*s^-1 with beams of 10^10 particles stored in COSY could be reached.Comment: 18 pages, 13 figures, 4 table

    Close-to-threshold Meson Production in Hadronic Interactions

    Studies of meson production at threshold in the hadron--hadron interaction began in the fifties when sufficient energies of accelerated protons were available. A strong interdependence between developments in accelerator physics, detector performance and theoretical understanding led to a unique vivid field of physics. Early experiments performed with bubble chambers revealed already typical ingredients of threshold studies, which were superseded by more complete meson production investigations at the nucleon beam facilities TRIUMF, LAMPF, PSI, LEAR and SATURNE. Currently, with the advent of the new cooler rings as IUCF, CELSIUS and COSY the field is entering a new domain of precision and the next step of further progress. The analysis of this new data in the short range limit permits a more fundamental consideration and a quantitative comparison of the production processes for different mesons in the few--body final states. The interpretation of the data take advantage of the fact that production reactions close-to-threshold are characterized by only a few degrees of freedom between a well defined combination of initial and exit channels. Deviations from predictions of phase-space controlled one-meson-exchange models are indications of new and exciting physics. Precision data on differential cross sections, isospin and spin observables -- partly but by no means adequately available -- are presently turning up on the horizon. There is work for the next years and excitement of the physics expected.     Leading order determination of the gluon polarisation from DIS events with high-p_T hadron pairs

    We present a determination of the gluon polarisation Delta g/g in the nucleon, based on the longitudinal double-spin asymmetry of DIS events with a pair of large transverse-momentum hadrons in the final state. The data were obtained by the COMPASS experiment at CERN using a 160 GeV/c polarised muon beam scattering off a polarised ^6LiD target. The gluon polarisation is evaluated by a Neural Network approach for three intervals of the gluon momentum fraction x_g covering the range 0.04 < x_g < 0.27. The values obtained at leading order in QCD do not show any significant dependence on x_g. Their average is Delta g/g = 0.125 +/- 0.060 (stat.) +/- 0.063 (syst.) at x_g=0.09 and a scale of mu^2 = 3 (GeV/c)^2.Comment: 13 pages, 6 figures and 3 table

    Quark helicity distributions from longitudinal spin asymmetries in muon-proton and muon-deuteron scattering

    Double-spin asymmetries for production of charged pions and kaons in semi-inclusive deep-inelastic muon scattering have been measured by the COMPASS experiment at CERN. The data, obtained by scattering a 160 GeV muon beam off a longitudinally polarised NH_3 target, cover a range of the Bjorken variable x between 0.004 and 0.7. A leading order evaluation of the helicity distributions for the three lightest quarks and antiquark flavours derived from these asymmetries and from our previous deuteron data is presented. The resulting values of the sea quark distributions are small and do not show any sizable dependence on x in the range of the measurements. No significant difference is observed between the strange and antistrange helicity distributions, both compatible with zero. The integrated value of the flavour asymmetry of the helicity distribution of the light-quark sea, \Delta u-bar - \Delta d-bar, is found to be slightly positive, about 1.5 standard deviations away from zero.Comment: 13 pages, 5 figure
