    The influence of film music on moral judgments of movie scenes and felt emotions

The aim of this study was to investigate a potential influence of music on moral judgments in the context of film reception. In the course of an online experiment, 252 participants were assigned to three different experimental conditions (no, positive, or negative music). Participants were requested to assess actions shown in two 2–3-minute audio-visual film excerpts with regard to their perceived moral rightness and to report induced emotions after watching the film clips. Afterwards, they were asked to complete the MFQ-30 questionnaire measuring the foundations of their moral judgments. Results revealed that in one of four cases (i.e. happiness in film excerpt 1), music had a significant effect on recipients’ emotions and also indirectly influenced their moral judgment. In three of four cases, however, the intended emotion induction through film music did not succeed, and thus a significant indirect influence of music on moral judgment was not found. Furthermore, associations between moral foundations, perceived rightness of action, and induced emotions were observed. Future lab studies are indicated to investigate potential moderating influences of the experimental environment on emotion induction through film music

    The Temperature Dependence of the QCD Running Coupling

    We study the running of the QCD coupling with the momentum squared (Q2Q^2) and the temperature scales in the high temperature limit (T>TcT > T_{c}), using a mass dependent renormalization scheme to build the Renormalization Group Equations. The approach used guaranty gauge invariance, through the use of the Hard Thermal Loop approximation, and independence of the vertex chosen to renormalize the coupling. In general, the dependence of the coupling with the temperature is not logarithmical, although in the region Q2∌T2Q^2 \sim T^2 the logarithm approximation is reasonable. Finally, as known from Debye screening, color charge is screened in the coupling. The number of flavors, however, is anti-screened.Comment: 5 pages, 2 figure

    This thesis reports a field experiment of teachers' non-verbal attending and verbal responding behaviours and their relation to pupil achievement. It was expected that teachers who used higher level non-verbal and verbal skills would have children who achieved at a higher level. A group of fifteen teachers, five in three different schools, were video-taped at the beginning of the school year. Because all of the teachers were functioning at low levels on scales of attending and responding, one group of teachers was given ten hours of training in these skills. One other group of five teachers was given a placebo treatment and the remaining group received no treatment. All of these teachers were video-taped at the end of the school year. All of the children were tested at the beginning and the end of the school year on standardized achievement measures. Analysis of the data revealed that ten hours of training given one hour at a time at intervals of one week was not sufficient to establish average classroom conditions that were significantly different from the other experimental treatments. The trained teachers did improve in the expected direction more than the other teachers. The students of the two teachers who responded at the highest levels were compared to the students of the two teachers who responded at the lowest level. The results supported the hypothesis. From this sample of teachers those who were female, who responded to feelings, who had students from a higher socio-economic status, who were just beginning to teach, and who attended and responded appropriately had students with higher results

    Mixed Volume Techniques for Embeddings of Laman Graphs

    Determining the number of embeddings of Laman graph frameworks is an open problem which corresponds to understanding the solutions of the resulting systems of equations. In this paper we investigate the bounds which can be obtained from the viewpoint of Bernstein's Theorem. The focus of the paper is to provide the methods to study the mixed volume of suitable systems of polynomial equations obtained from the edge length constraints. While in most cases the resulting bounds are weaker than the best known bounds on the number of embeddings, for some classes of graphs the bounds are tight.Comment: Thorough revision of the first version.
