In the eye of the beholder: owner preferences for variations in cats' appearances with specific focus on skull morphology
Changes in the popularity of cat breeds are largely driven by human perceptions of, and selection for, phenotypic traits including skull morphology. The popularity of breeds with altered skull shapes appears to be increasing, and owner preferences are an important part of this dynamic. This study sought to establish how and why a range of phenotypic attributes, including skull shape, affect preferences shown by cat owners. Two questionnaires were distributed on-line to cat owners who were asked to rate preferences for pictures of cats on a 0–10 scale. Veterinarian consensus established the skull types of the cats pictured (i.e., level of brachycephaly (BC) or dolichocephaly (DC)). Preferences were then explored relative to cat skull type, coat and eye color, and coat length. Generalized estimating equations identified relationships between physical characteristics and respondent ratings. Further sub-analyses explored effects of respondents' occupation, location and previous cat ownership on rating scores. Overall, cats with extreme changes in skull morphology (both BC and DC) were significantly less preferred than mesocephalic cats. Green eyes, ginger coat color and medium length coat were most preferred. Current owners of a BC or DC pure bred cat showed significantly greater preference for cats with similar features and significantly lower preference for the opposite extreme. Respondents from Asia were significantly more likely to prefer both BC and DC cats as compared to respondents from other locations. Finally, those in an animal care profession, as compared to other professions, provided a significantly lower preference rating for BC cats but not for DC cats. This work, despite the acknowledged limitations, provides preliminary evidence that preferences for cat breeds, and their associated skull morphologies, are driven by both cultural and experiential parameters. This information may allow for better targeting of educational materials concerning cat breeds
Motivation of owners to purchase pedigree cats, with specific focus on the acquisition of brachycephalic cats
Background: Cats are globally popular pets and pedigree cats are increasingly prevalent, with brachycephalic breeds being the most registered breeds. How owners decide upon and acquire their cats is poorly understood. Moreover, there are growing concerns about the health and welfare of brachycephalic (BC) dogs and recent studies are raising the awareness of health and welfare problems in BC cats. Methods: An online survey investigated owners’ motivations, perceptions and behaviours prior to, during and following acquisition of non-pedigree (NP), extreme brachycephalic pedigree (BC; i.e., Persian and Exotic Shorthair) and mild to non-BC pedigree (P) cats. Results: The survey received 1367 valid responses (NP n = 882, P n = 400, BC n = 85 (6.2%)). There were marked differences between NP, P and BC owners’ perception of their cats’ health and welfare, reason(s) for acquisition and its process. Owners of NP were less influenced by appearance, behaviour and other features than P or BC owners. In contrast, P and BC owners were highly influenced by appearance, with P owners also placing greater importance on good breed health than BC owners. BC owners were less likely to recommend their breeds to prospective cat owners, apparently concerned by high maintenance requirements. Conclusion: Further research is needed to determine how decision-making is constructed and how it may be improved, especially in respect of welfare outcomes for extreme BC cats given the increased weighting given to appearance over health
The HI content of the Eridanus group of galaxies
The HI content of galaxies in the Eridanus group is studied using the GMRT
observations and the HIPASS data. A significant HI deficiency up to a factor of
2-3 is observed in galaxies in the high galaxy density regions. The HI
deficiency in galaxies is observed to be directly correlated with the local
projected galaxy density, and inversely correlated with the line-of-sight
radial velocity. Furthermore, galaxies with larger optical diameters are
predominantly in the lower galaxy density regions. It is suggested that the HI
deficiency in Eridanus is due to tidal interactions. In some galaxies,
evidences of tidal interactions are seen. An important implication is that
significant evolution of galaxies can take place in the group environment. In
the hierarchical way of formation of clusters via mergers of groups, a fraction
of the observed HI deficiency in clusters could have originated in groups. The
co-existence of S0's and severely HI deficient galaxies in the Eridanus group
suggests that galaxy harassment is likely to be an effective mechanism for

Internal kinematics of spiral galaxies in distant clusters IV. Gas kinematics of spiral galaxies in intermediate redshift clusters and in the field
(Abridged) We trace the interaction processes of galaxies at intermediate
redshift by measuring the irregularity of their ionized gas kinematics, and
investigate these irregularities as a function of the environment (cluster
versus field) and of morphological type (spiral versus irregular). Our sample
consists of 92 distant galaxies. 16 cluster (z~0.3 and z~0.5) and 29 field
galaxies (mean z=0.44) of these have velocity fields with sufficient signal to
be analyzed. We find that the fraction of galaxies that have irregular gas
kinematics is remarkably similar in galaxy clusters and in the field at
intermediate redshifts. The distribution of the field and cluster galaxies in
(ir)regularity parameters space is also similar. On the other hand galaxies
with small central concentration of light, that we see in the field sample, are
absent in the cluster sample. We find that field galaxies at intermediate
redshifts have more irregular velocity fields as well as more clumpy and less
centrally concentrated light distributions than their local counterparts.
Comparison with a SINS sample of 11 z ~ 2 galaxies shows that these distant
galaxies have more irregular gas kinematics than our intermediate redshift
cluster and field sample. We do not find a dependence of the irregularities in
gas kinematics on morphological type. We find that two different indicators of
star formation correlate with irregularity in the gas kinematics. More
irregular gas kinematics, also more clumpy and less centrally concentrated
light distributions of spiral field galaxies at intermediate redshifts in
comparison to their local counterparts indicate that these galaxies are
probably still in the process of building their disks via mechanisms such as
accretion and mergers. On the other hand, they have less irregular gas

A cross-sectional study of Tritrichomonas foetus infection among healthy cats at shows in Norway
GMRT HI observations of the Eridanus group of galaxies
The GMRT HI 21cm-line observations of galaxies in the Eridanus group are
presented. The Eridanus group, at a distance of ~23 Mpc, is a loose group of
\~200 galaxies. The group extends more than 10 Mpc in projection. The velocity
dispersion of the galaxies in the group is ~240 km/s. The galaxies are
clustered into different sub-groups. The overall population mix of the group is
30% (E+S0) and 70% (Sp+Irr). The observations of 57 Eridanus galaxies were
carried out with the GMRT for ~200 hour. HI emission was detected from 31
galaxies. The channel rms of ~1.0 mJy beam^{-1} was achieved for most of the
image-cubes made with 4 hour of data. The corresponding HI column density
sensitivity (3-sigma) is ~1x10^{20} cm^{-2} for a velocity-width of ~13.4 km/s.
The 3-sigma detection limit of HI mass is ~1.2x10^{7} M_sun for a line-width of
50 km/s. Total HI images, HI velocity fields, global HI line profiles, HI mass
surface densities, HI disk parameters and HI rotation curves are presented. The
velocity fields are analysed separately for the approaching and the receding
sides of the galaxies. This data will be used to study the HI and the radio
continuum properties, the Tully-Fisher relations, the dark matter halos, and

Binding of protegrin-1 to Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Burkholderia cepacia
BACKGROUND: Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Burkholderia cepacia infections of cystic fibrosis patients' lungs are often resistant to conventional antibiotic therapy. Protegrins are antimicrobial peptides with potent activity against many bacteria, including P. aeruginosa. The present study evaluates the correlation between protegrin-1 (PG-1) sensitivity/resistance and protegrin binding in P. aeruginosa and B. cepacia. METHODS: The PG-1 sensitivity/resistance and PG-1 binding properties of P. aeruginosa and B. cepacia were assessed using radial diffusion assays, radioiodinated PG-1, and surface plasmon resonance (BiaCore). RESULTS: The six P. aeruginosa strains examined were very sensitive to PG-1, exhibiting minimal active concentrations from 0.0625–0.5 μg/ml in radial diffusion assays. In contrast, all five B. cepacia strains examined were greater than 10-fold to 100-fold more resistant, with minimal active concentrations ranging from 6–10 μg/ml. When incubated with a radioiodinated variant of PG-1, a sensitive P. aeruginosa strain bound considerably more protegrin molecules per cell than a resistant B. cepacia strain. Binding/diffusion and surface plasmon resonance assays revealed that isolated lipopolysaccharide (LPS) and lipid A from the sensitive P. aeruginosa strains bound PG-1 more effectively than LPS and lipid A from resistant B. cepacia strains. CONCLUSION: These findings support the hypothesis that the relative resistance of B. cepacia to protegrin is due to a reduced number of PG-1 binding sites on the lipid A moiety of its LPS
Very Low-Mass Stellar and Substellar Companions to Solar-Like Stars from MARVELS I: A Low Mass Ratio Stellar Companion to TYC 4110-01037-1 in a 79-day Orbit
TYC 4110-01037-1 has a low-mass stellar companion, whose small mass ratio and
short orbital period are atypical amongst solar-like (Teff ~< 6000 K) binary
systems. Our analysis of TYC 4110-01037-1 reveals it to be a moderately aged
(~<5 Gyr) solar-like star having a mass of 1.07 +/- 0.08 MSun and radius of
0.99 +/- 0.18 RSun. We analyze 32 radial velocity measurements from the
SDSS-III MARVELS survey as well as 6 supporting radial velocity measurements
from the SARG spectrograph on the 3.6m TNG telescope obtained over a period of
~2 years. The best Keplerian orbital fit parameters were found to have a period
of 78.994 +/- 0.012 days, an eccentricity of 0.1095 +/- 0.0023, and a
semi-amplitude of 4199 +/- 11 m/s. We determine the minimum companion mass (if
sin i = 1) to be 97.7 +/- 5.8 MJup. The system's companion to host star mass
ratio, >0.087 +/- 0.003, places it at the lowest end of observed values for
short period stellar companions to solar-like (Teff ~< 6000 K) stars. One
possible way to create such a system would be if a triple-component stellar
multiple broke up into a short period, low q binary during the cluster
dispersal phase of its lifetime. A candidate tertiary body has been identified
in the system via single-epoch, high contrast imagery. If this object is
confirmed to be co-moving, we estimate it would be a dM4 star. We present these
results in the context of our larger-scale effort to constrain the statistics
of low mass stellar and brown dwarf companions to FGK-type stars via the

The density and peculiar velocity fields of nearby galaxies
We review the quantitative science that can be and has been done with
redshift and peculiar velocity surveys of galaxies in the nearby universe.
After a brief background setting the cosmological context for this work, the
first part of this review focuses on redshift surveys. The practical issues of
how redshift surveys are carried out, and how one turns a distribution of
galaxies into a smoothed density field, are discussed. Then follows a
description of major redshift surveys that have been done, and the local
cosmography out to 8,000 km/s that they have mapped. We then discuss in some
detail the various quantitative cosmological tests that can be carried out with
redshift data. The second half of this review concentrates on peculiar velocity
studies, beginning with a thorough review of existing techniques. After
discussing the various biases which plague peculiar velocity work, we survey
quantitative analyses done with peculiar velocity surveys alone, and finally
with the combination of data from both redshift and peculiar velocity surveys.
The data presented rule out the standard Cold Dark Matter model, although
several variants of Cold Dark Matter with more power on large scales fare
better. All the data are consistent with the hypothesis that the initial
density field had a Gaussian distribution, although one cannot rule out broad
classes of non-Gaussian models. Comparison of the peculiar velocity and density
fields constrains the Cosmological Density Parameter. The results here are
consistent with a flat universe with mild biasing of the galaxies relative to

Exploring expert opinion on the practicality and effectiveness of biosecurity measures on dairy farms in the United Kingdom using choice modeling
Biosecurity, defined as a series of measures aiming to stop disease-causing agents entering or leaving an area where farm animals are present, is very important for the continuing economic viability of the United Kingdom dairy sector, and for animal welfare. This study gathered expert opinion from farmers, veterinarians, consultants, academics, and government and industry representatives on the practicality and effectiveness of different biosecurity measures on dairy farms. The study used best-worst scaling, a technique that allows for greater discrimination between choices and avoids the variability in interpretation associated with other methods, such as Likert scales and ranking methods. Keeping a closed herd was rated as the most effective measure overall, and maintaining regular contact with the veterinarian was the most practical measure. Measures relating to knowledge, planning, and veterinary involvement; buying-in practices; and quarantine and treatment scored highly for effectiveness overall. Measures relating to visitors, equipment, pest control, and hygiene scored much lower for effectiveness. Overall, measures relating to direct animal-to-animal contact scored much higher for effectiveness than measures relating to indirect disease transmission. Some of the most effective measures were also rated as the least practical, such as keeping a closed herd and avoiding nose-to-nose contact between contiguous animals, suggesting that real barriers exist for farmers when implementing biosecurity measures on dairy farms. We observed heterogeneity in expert opinion on biosecurity measures; for example, veterinarians rated the effectiveness of consulting the veterinarian on biosecurity significantly more highly than dairy farmers, suggesting a greater need for veterinarians to promote their services on-farm. Still, both groups rated it as a practical measure, suggesting that the farmer-veterinarian relationship holds some advantages for the promotion of biosecurity
