The Reference System in the Model of PGE: Proposing a Generalized Description of Reference Products and their Interrelations
Samsung recently introduced a new smartphone display with increased breaking resistance, which will probably be relevant for future cars as well. This example shows that subsystems, in general artefacts from former development processes can be relevant for subsequent projects. Their integration has to be planned, i.a. even before the original product is in the market and across branches. The research on supporting methods requires a suitable description model for this phenomenon. Research in design reuse and PGE â product generation engineering addresses this only partially yet. Design reuse focuses on the informational aspect, PGE refers primarily to reference products. This contribution aims at closing this gap as a basis for future research. Two case studies from industry projects by the authors and an example from foresight and product planning show the role of artefacts from former development processes in running projects. It is described which artefacts are used as a reference, why they are used and when. Based on these findings the authors propose the term âreference systemâ to depict the whole set of artefacts, which serves as a basis for every product development project
The saturation scale and its x-dependence from Lambda polarization studies
The transverse polarization of forward Lambda hyperons produced in
high-energy p-A collisions is expected to display an extremum at a transverse
momentum around the saturation scale. This was first observed within the
context of the McLerran-Venugopalan model which has an x-independent saturation
scale. The extremum arises due to the k_t-odd nature of the polarization
dependent fragmentation function, which probes approximately the derivative of
the dipole scattering amplitude. The amplitude changes most strongly around the
saturation scale, resulting in a peak in the polarization. We find that the
observation also extends to the more realistic case in which the saturation
scale Q_s is x dependent. Since a range of x and therefore Q_s values is probed
at a given transverse momentum and rapidity, this result is a priori not
expected. Moreover, the measurement of Lambda polarization over a range of x_F
values actually provides a direct probe of the x dependence of the saturation
scale. This novel feature is demonstrated for typical LHC kinematics and for
several phenomenological models of the dipole scattering amplitude. We show
that although the measurement will be challenging, it may be feasible at LHC.
The situation at RHIC is not favorable, because the peak will likely be at too
low transverse momentum of the Lambda to be a trustworthy measure of the
saturation scale.Comment: 11 pages, 6 figure
Measurements of fiducial and differential cross sections for Higgs boson production in the diphoton decay channel at sâ=8 TeV with ATLAS
Measurements of fiducial and differential cross sections are presented for Higgs boson production in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of sâ=8 TeV. The analysis is performed in the H â γγ decay channel using 20.3 fbâ1 of data recorded by the ATLAS experiment at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. The signal is extracted using a fit to the diphoton invariant mass spectrum assuming that the width of the resonance is much smaller than the experimental resolution. The signal yields are corrected for the effects of detector inefficiency and resolution. The pp â H â γγ fiducial cross section is measured to be 43.2 ±9.4(stat.) ââ2.9 +â3.2 (syst.) ±1.2(lumi)fb for a Higgs boson of mass 125.4GeV decaying to two isolated photons that have transverse momentum greater than 35% and 25% of the diphoton invariant mass and each with absolute pseudorapidity less than 2.37. Four additional fiducial cross sections and two cross-section limits are presented in phase space regions that test the theoretical modelling of different Higgs boson production mechanisms, or are sensitive to physics beyond the Standard Model. Differential cross sections are also presented, as a function of variables related to the diphoton kinematics and the jet activity produced in the Higgs boson events. The observed spectra are statistically limited but broadly in line with the theoretical expectations
Evidence for the Higgs-boson Yukawa coupling to tau leptons with the ATLAS detector
Results of a search for H â Ï Ï decays are presented, based on the full set of proton-proton collision data recorded by the ATLAS experiment at the LHC during 2011 and 2012. The data correspond to integrated luminosities of 4.5 fbâ1 and 20.3 fbâ1 at centre-of-mass energies of âs = 7 TeV and âs = 8 TeV respectively. All combinations of leptonic (Ï â `ÎœÎœÂŻ with ` = e, ”) and hadronic (Ï â hadrons Îœ) tau decays are considered. An excess of events over the expected background from other Standard Model processes is found with an observed (expected) significance of 4.5 (3.4) standard deviations. This excess provides evidence for the direct coupling of the recently discovered Higgs boson to fermions. The measured signal strength, normalised to the Standard Model expectation, of ” = 1.43 +0.43 â0.37 is consistent with the predicted Yukawa coupling strength in the Standard Model
Candidate gene resequencing in a large bicuspid aortic valve-associated thoracic aortic aneurysm cohort: SMAD6 as an important contributor
Bicuspid aortic valve (BAV) is the most common congenital heart defect. Although many BAV patients remain asymptomatic, at least 20% develop thoracic aortic aneurysm (TAA). Historically, BAV-related TAA was considered as a hemodynamic consequence of the valve defect. Multiple lines of evidence currently suggest that genetic determinants contribute to the pathogenesis of both BAV and TAA in affected individuals. Despite high heritability, only very few genes have been linked to BAV or BAV/TAA, such as NOTCH1, SMAD6, and MAT2A. Moreover, they only explain a minority of patients. Other candidate genes have been suggested based on the presence of BAV in knockout mouse models (e.g., GATA5, NOS3) or in syndromic (e.g., TGFBR1/2, TGFB2/3) or non-syndromic (e.g., ACTA2) TAA forms. We hypothesized that rare genetic variants in these genes may be enriched in patients presenting with both BAV and TAA. We performed targeted resequencing of 22 candidate genes using Haloplex target enrichment in a strictly defined BAV/TAA cohort (n = 441; BAV in addition to an aortic root or ascendens diameter = 4.0 cm in adults, or a Z-score = 3 in children) and in a collection of healthy controls with normal echocardiographic evaluation (n = 183). After additional burden analysis against the Exome Aggregation Consortium database, the strongest candidate susceptibility gene was SMAD6 (p = 0.002), with 2.5% (n = 11) of BAV/TAA patients harboring causal variants, including two nonsense, one in-frame deletion and two frameshift mutations. All six missense mutations were located in the functionally important MH1 and MH2 domains. In conclusion, we report a significant contribution of SMAD6 mutations to the etiology of the BAV/TAA phenotype
Inferring cellular networks â a review
In this review we give an overview of computational and statistical methods to reconstruct cellular networks. Although this area of research is vast and fast developing, we show that most currently used methods can be organized by a few key concepts. The first part of the review deals with conditional independence models including Gaussian graphical models and Bayesian networks. The second part discusses probabilistic and graph-based methods for data from experimental interventions and perturbations
Inelastic Photoproduction of J/Psi Mesons at HERA
An analysis of inelastic photoproduction of J/Psi mesons is presented using
data collected at the ep collider HERA corresponding to an integrated
luminosity of above 80pb-1. Differential and double differential cross sections
are measured in a wide kinematic region: 60<W_gammap<260 GeV, 1<p_t^2< 60 GeV^2
and 0.05<z<0.9, where z is the fraction of the energy of the exchanged photon
transferred to the J/Psi meson in the rest frame of the target proton. Cross
sections at z<0.3 are presented for the first time. Theoretical calculations
within the Colour Singlet Model at NLO for direct photon processes are shown to
give a good description of the data in the medium z region (0.3<z<0.9) up to
the highest p_t^2 values. A calculation using a k_t factorisation approach in
LO in the Colour Singlet Model is also able to describe these data. The data in
the full z range are also compared to LO calculations within a non-relativistic
QCD framework including color octet and colour singlet contributions for direct
and resolved photons. It seems possible to reconcile data and theory with
modest contributions from colour octet processes. The polarisation of the J/Psi
meson is measured as a function of z and p_t,psi and is reasonably described by
the theoretical predictions.Comment: 30 pages, 11 figures, 11 table

Flexible Manufacturing Systems: background examples and models
In this paper, we discuss recent innovations in manufacturing technology and their implications on the design and control of manufacturing systems. Recognizing the need to respond properly to rapidly changing market demands, we discuss several types of flexibility that can be incorporated in our production organisation to achieve this goal. We show how the concept of a Flexible Manufacturing System (FMS) naturally arises as an attempt to combine the advantages of traditional Job Shops and dedicated production lines. The main body of the paper is devoted to a classification of FMS problem areas and a review of models developed to understand and solve these problems. For each problem area, a number of important contributions in the literature is indicated. The reader, interested in the applications of Operations Research models but not familiar with the technical background of FMSâs, will find the descriptions of some essential FMS elements useful. Some final remarks and directions for future research conclude the paper.<br/
Fiducial and differential cross sections of Higgs boson production measured in the four-lepton decay channel in pp collisions at âs = 8 TeV with the ATLAS detector
Measurements of fiducial and differential cross sections of Higgs boson production in the HâZZâ â 4â decay channel are presented. The cross sections are determined within a fiducial phase space and corrected for detection efficiency and resolution effects. They are based on 20.3 fbâÂč of pp collision data, produced at âs = 8 TeV centre-of-mass energy at the LHC and recorded by the ATLAS detector. The differential measurements are performed in bins of transverse momentum and rapidity of the four-lepton system, the invariant mass of the subleading lepton pair and the decay angle of the leading lepton pair with respect to the beam line in the four-lepton rest frame, as well as the number of jets and the transverse momentum of the leading jet. The measured cross sections are compared to selected theoretical calculations of the Standard Model expectations. No significant deviation from any of the tested predictions is found
