    Iluminismo e religião: ruptura ou continuidade?

    This article, through a review of a portion of the relevant literature, problematizes the way in which the connection between the Enlightenment and religion has traditionally been explained, principally by a historiography excessively focused on the 18th century French experience. Alternatively, this article argues that “continuity,” rather than “rupture,” more adequately describes this relationship. However, continuity, as understood here, excludes neither tension nor transformation. If, on the one hand, the Enlightenment is much more akin to religion than has been previously recognized, on the other hand, it has to a great extent shaped modern understanding of religion. This revision of the relationship between the Enlightenment and religion suggests the need to rethink the very identity of the Enlightenment and the issue of secularization. The article uses as a guide the German debate surrounding the question, “What is the Enlightenment?” It concludes with an analysis of Kant’s famous contribution to this debate.A partir de uma revisão de parte da literatura recente sobre o tema, este artigo busca problematizar a maneira pela qual Iluminismo e religião foram tradicionalmente articulados, sobretudo por uma historiografia excessivamente focada na experiência do século XVIII francês. Em contraposição, este artigo argumenta que “continuidade” é um termo que expressa de forma mais adequada essa relação do que o termo “ruptura”. No entanto, continuidade, como se defende, não exclui tensões nem tampouco transformações. Se, de um lado, o Iluminismo é muito mais próximo da religião do que se reconhece; de outro, ele modelou em larga medida o entendimento moderno da religião. A revisão da relação entre Iluminismo e religião implica também repensar a própria identidade do Iluminismo e a questão da secularização.     Filosofia e História em Thomas Hobbes: uma leitura de An Historical Narration Concerning Heresy

    This article discusses the function of history in the thought of Thomas Hobbes. The first part of the article considers Hobbes’s critique on the importance bestowed to experience and history by the classical humanist tradition, and his defense of the epistemic superiority of reason and philosophy. The second part focuses on his posthumous work An Historical Narration Concerning Heresy (1680), interpreting it in the light of the ecclesiastical history genre conventions and the English Restoration time’s political and religious debates. Finally, this study argues that this oeuvre is a kind of theoretically informed history, conceived to be a rhetorically effective intervention on a contemporary debate on heresy and its punishment, and on the ecclesiastical jurisdiction.  Este artigo discute a função da história no pensamento do filósofo inglês Thomas Hobbes. A primeira parte do artigo trata da crítica de Hobbes à importância conferida à experiência e à história pela tradição clássico-humanista e de sua defesa da superioridade epistêmica da razão e da filosofia. A segunda parte concentra-se em sua obra postumamente publicada, An Historical Narration Concerning Heresy (1680), buscando interpretá-la à luz das convenções do gênero da história eclesiástica e dos debates político-religiosos do período da Restauração inglesa. Argumenta-se, finalmente, que essa obra é um tipo de história teoricamente informada, concebida para se constituir como uma intervenção retoricamente efetiva em um debate contemporâneo acerca da heresia e de sua punição e da jurisdição eclesiástic

    Tempo e crise na teoria da modernidade de Reinhart Koselleck

    This article explores two inherent aspects of the theory of modernity proposed by the German historian Reinhart Koselleck. The first one corresponds to his interpretation of the emergence of the notion of “historical time”; and the second one, to his argument on the sociopolitical crisis set off by the modern tendency to use philosophies of history as support for programs of political action. It will be shown that Koselleck, while saluting the discovery/invention by the 18th century philosophies of history of a “human history”, condemns the political instrumentalization of those philosophies as the vector of a crisis that extends itself from the French Revolution up to the Cold War. As a conclusion, a few points of contact between Koselleck’s vision of modernity and that of the philosopher Hannah Arendt are suggested.Este artigo explora dois aspectos constitutivos da “teoria da modernidade” proposta pelo historiador alemão Reinhart Koselleck. O primeiro corresponde à sua interpretação da emergência da noção de “tempo histórico”; e o segundo, a seu argumento acerca da crise sociopolítica que se instaura a partir da tendência moderna a recorrer a filosofias da história para sustentar programas de ação política. Procurar-se-á demonstrar que Koselleck, ao mesmo tempo em que saúda a descoberta/invenção – pelas filosofias da história do século XVIII – de uma “história humana”, condena a instrumentalização política dessas mesmas filosofias como o vetor de uma crise que se estende da Revolução Francesa até a Guerra Fria.     Pervasive gaps in Amazonian ecological research

    Biodiversity loss is one of the main challenges of our time,1,2 and attempts to address it require a clear un derstanding of how ecological communities respond to environmental change across time and space.3,4 While the increasing availability of global databases on ecological communities has advanced our knowledge of biodiversity sensitivity to environmental changes,5–7 vast areas of the tropics remain understudied.8–11 In the American tropics, Amazonia stands out as the world’s most diverse rainforest and the primary source of Neotropical biodiversity,12 but it remains among the least known forests in America and is often underrepre sented in biodiversity databases.13–15 To worsen this situation, human-induced modifications16,17 may elim inate pieces of the Amazon’s biodiversity puzzle before we can use them to understand how ecological com munities are responding. To increase generalization and applicability of biodiversity knowledge,18,19 it is thus crucial to reduce biases in ecological research, particularly in regions projected to face the most pronounced environmental changes. We integrate ecological community metadata of 7,694 sampling sites for multiple or ganism groups in a machine learning model framework to map the research probability across the Brazilian Amazonia, while identifying the region’s vulnerability to environmental change. 15%–18% of the most ne glected areas in ecological research are expected to experience severe climate or land use changes by 2050.     ATLANTIC EPIPHYTES: a data set of vascular and non-vascular epiphyte plants and lichens from the Atlantic Forest

    Epiphytes are hyper-diverse and one of the frequently undervalued life forms in plant surveys and biodiversity inventories. Epiphytes of the Atlantic Forest, one of the most endangered ecosystems in the world, have high endemism and radiated recently in the Pliocene. We aimed to (1) compile an extensive Atlantic Forest data set on vascular, non-vascular plants (including hemiepiphytes), and lichen epiphyte species occurrence and abundance; (2) describe the epiphyte distribution in the Atlantic Forest, in order to indicate future sampling efforts. Our work presents the first epiphyte data set with information on abundance and occurrence of epiphyte phorophyte species. All data compiled here come from three main sources provided by the authors: published sources (comprising peer-reviewed articles, books, and theses), unpublished data, and herbarium data. We compiled a data set composed of 2,095 species, from 89,270 holo/hemiepiphyte records, in the Atlantic Forest of Brazil, Argentina, Paraguay, and Uruguay, recorded from 1824 to early 2018. Most of the records were from qualitative data (occurrence only, 88%), well distributed throughout the Atlantic Forest. For quantitative records, the most common sampling method was individual trees (71%), followed by plot sampling (19%), and transect sampling (10%). Angiosperms (81%) were the most frequently registered group, and Bromeliaceae and Orchidaceae were the families with the greatest number of records (27,272 and 21,945, respectively). Ferns and Lycophytes presented fewer records than Angiosperms, and Polypodiaceae were the most recorded family, and more concentrated in the Southern and Southeastern regions. Data on non-vascular plants and lichens were scarce, with a few disjunct records concentrated in the Northeastern region of the Atlantic Forest. For all non-vascular plant records, Lejeuneaceae, a family of liverworts, was the most recorded family. We hope that our effort to organize scattered epiphyte data help advance the knowledge of epiphyte ecology, as well as our understanding of macroecological and biogeographical patterns in the Atlantic Forest.     Worldwide trends in hypertension prevalence and progress in treatment and control from 1990 to 2019: a pooled analysis of 1201 population-representative studies with 104 million participants

    Background Hypertension can be detected at the primary health-care level and low-cost treatments can effectively control hypertension. We aimed to measure the prevalence of hypertension and progress in its detection, treatment, and control from 1990 to 2019 for 200 countries and territories. Methods We used data from 1990 to 2019 on people aged 30–79 years from population-representative studies with measurement of blood pressure and data on blood pressure treatment. We defined hypertension as having systolic blood pressure 140 mm Hg or greater, diastolic blood pressure 90 mm Hg or greater, or taking medication for hypertension. We applied a Bayesian hierarchical model to estimate the prevalence of hypertension and the proportion of people with hypertension who had a previous diagnosis (detection), who were taking medication for hypertension (treatment), and whose hypertension was controlled to below 140/90 mm Hg (control). The model allowed for trends over time to be non-linear and to vary by age. Findings The number of people aged 30–79 years with hypertension doubled from 1990 to 2019, from 331 (95% credible interval 306–359) million women and 317 (292–344) million men in 1990 to 626 (584–668) million women and 652 (604–698) million men in 2019, despite stable global age-standardised prevalence. In 2019, age-standardised hypertension prevalence was lowest in Canada and Peru for both men and women; in Taiwan, South Korea, Japan, and some countries in western Europe including Switzerland, Spain, and the UK for women; and in several low-income and middle-income countries such as Eritrea, Bangladesh, Ethiopia, and Solomon Islands for men. Hypertension prevalence surpassed 50% for women in two countries and men in nine countries, in central and eastern Europe, central Asia, Oceania, and Latin America. Globally, 59% (55–62) of women and 49% (46–52) of men with hypertension reported a previous diagnosis of hypertension in 2019, and 47% (43–51) of women and 38% (35–41) of men were treated. Control rates among people with hypertension in 2019 were 23% (20–27) for women and 18% (16–21) for men. In 2019, treatment and control rates were highest in South Korea, Canada, and Iceland (treatment >70%; control >50%), followed by the USA, Costa Rica, Germany, Portugal, and Taiwan. Treatment rates were less than 25% for women and less than 20% for men in Nepal, Indonesia, and some countries in sub-Saharan Africa and Oceania. Control rates were below 10% for women and men in these countries and for men in some countries in north Africa, central and south Asia, and eastern Europe. Treatment and control rates have improved in most countries since 1990, but we found little change in most countries in sub-Saharan Africa and Oceania. Improvements were largest in high-income countries, central Europe, and some upper-middle-income and recently high-income countries including Costa Rica, Taiwan, Kazakhstan, South Africa, Brazil, Chile, Turkey, and Iran. Interpretation Improvements in the detection, treatment, and control of hypertension have varied substantially across countries, with some middle-income countries now outperforming most high-income nations. The dual approach of reducing hypertension prevalence through primary prevention and enhancing its treatment and control is achievable not only in high-income countries but also in low-income and middle-income settings

    Heterogeneous contributions of change in population distribution of body mass index to change in obesity and underweight NCD Risk Factor Collaboration (NCD-RisC)

    From 1985 to 2016, the prevalence of underweight decreased, and that of obesity and severe obesity increased, in most regions, with significant variation in the magnitude of these changes across regions. We investigated how much change in mean body mass index (BMI) explains changes in the prevalence of underweight, obesity, and severe obesity in different regions using data from 2896 population-based studies with 187 million participants. Changes in the prevalence of underweight and total obesity, and to a lesser extent severe obesity, are largely driven by shifts in the distribution of BMI, with smaller contributions from changes in the shape of the distribution. In East and Southeast Asia and sub-Saharan Africa, the underweight tail of the BMI distribution was left behind as the distribution shifted. There is a need for policies that address all forms of malnutrition by making healthy foods accessible and affordable, while restricting unhealthy foods through fiscal and regulatory restrictions
