Prognostic value of discharge heart rate in acute heart failure patients: More relevant in atrial fibrillation?
Aims: The prognostic impact of heart rate (HR) in acute heart failure (AHF) patients is not well known especially in atrial fibrillation (AF) patients. The aim of the study was to evaluate the impact of admission HR, discharge HR, HR difference (admission-discharge) in AHF patients with sinus rhythm (SR) or AF on long- term outcomes. Methods: We included 1398 patients consecutively admitted with AHF between October 2013 and December 2014 from a national multicentre, prospective registry. Logistic regression models were used to estimate the association between admission HR, discharge HR and HR difference and one- year all-cause mortality and HF readmission. Results: The mean age of the study population was 72+/-12years. Of these, 594 (42.4%) were female, 655 (77.8%) were hypertensive and 655 (46.8%) had diabetes. Among all included patients, 745 (53.2%) had sinus rhythm and 653 (46.7%) had atrial fibrillation. Only discharge HR was associated with one year all-cause mortality (Relative risk (RR)=1.182, confidence interval (CI) 95% 1.024-1.366, p=0.022) in SR. In AF patients discharge HR was associated with one year all cause mortality (RR=1.276, CI 95% 1.115-1.459, p</=0.001). We did not observe a prognostic effect of admission HR or HRD on long-term outcomes in both groups. This relationship is not dependent on left ventricular ejection fraction. Conclusions: In AHF patients lower discharge HR, neither the admission nor the difference, is associated with better long-term outcomes especially in AF patients
Two loop electroweak corrections to and in the B-LSSM
The rare decays and are important to research new physics beyond standard model. In
this work, we investigate two loop electroweak corrections to and in the minimal
supersymmetric extension of the SM with local gauge symmetry (B-LSSM),
under a minimal flavor violating assumption for the soft breaking terms. In
this framework, new particles and new definition of squarks can affect the
theoretical predictions of these two processes, with respect to the MSSM.
Considering the constraints from updated experimental data, the numerical
results show that the B-LSSM can fit the experimental data for the branching
ratios of and . The
results of the rare decays also further constrain the parameter space of the

Fast Growth Increases the Selective Advantage of a Mutation Arising Recurrently during Evolution under Metal Limitation
Understanding the evolution of biological systems requires untangling the molecular mechanisms that connect genetic and environmental variations to their physiological consequences. Metal limitation across many environments, ranging from pathogens in the human body to phytoplankton in the oceans, imposes strong selection for improved metal acquisition systems. In this study, we uncovered the genetic and physiological basis of adaptation to metal limitation using experimental populations of Methylobacterium extorquens AM1 evolved in metal-deficient growth media. We identified a transposition mutation arising recurrently in 30 of 32 independent populations that utilized methanol as a carbon source, but not in any of the 8 that utilized only succinate. These parallel insertion events increased expression of a novel transporter system that enhanced cobalt uptake. Such ability ensured the production of vitamin B12, a cobalt-containing cofactor, to sustain two vitamin B12âdependent enzymatic reactions essential to methanol, but not succinate, metabolism. Interestingly, this mutation provided higher selective advantages under genetic backgrounds or incubation temperatures that permit faster growth, indicating growth-rateâdependent epistatic and genotype-by-environment interactions. Our results link beneficial mutations emerging in a metal-limiting environment to their physiological basis in carbon metabolism, suggest that certain molecular features may promote the emergence of parallel mutations, and indicate that the selective advantages of some mutations depend generically upon changes in growth rate that can stem from either genetic or environmental influences
Multi-messenger observations of a binary neutron star merger
On 2017 August 17 a binary neutron star coalescence candidate (later designated GW170817) with merger time 12:41:04 UTC was observed through gravitational waves by the Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo detectors. The Fermi Gamma-ray Burst Monitor independently detected a gamma-ray burst (GRB 170817A) with a time delay of ~1.7 s with respect to the merger time. From the gravitational-wave signal, the source was initially localized to a sky region of 31 deg2 at a luminosity distance of 40+8-8 Mpc and with component masses consistent with neutron stars. The component masses were later measured to be in the range 0.86 to 2.26 Mo. An extensive observing campaign was launched across the electromagnetic spectrum leading to the discovery of a bright optical transient (SSS17a, now with the IAU identification of AT 2017gfo) in NGC 4993 (at ~40 Mpc) less than 11 hours after the merger by the One- Meter, Two Hemisphere (1M2H) team using the 1 m Swope Telescope. The optical transient was independently detected by multiple teams within an hour. Subsequent observations targeted the object and its environment. Early ultraviolet observations revealed a blue transient that faded within 48 hours. Optical and infrared observations showed a redward evolution over ~10 days. Following early non-detections, X-ray and radio emission were discovered at the transientâs position ~9 and ~16 days, respectively, after the merger. Both the X-ray and radio emission likely arise from a physical process that is distinct from the one that generates the UV/optical/near-infrared emission. No ultra-high-energy gamma-rays and no neutrino candidates consistent with the source were found in follow-up searches. These observations support the hypothesis that GW170817 was produced by the merger of two neutron stars in NGC4993 followed by a short gamma-ray burst (GRB 170817A) and a kilonova/macronova powered by the radioactive decay of r-process nuclei synthesized in the ejecta
Measurement of the Îb0, Îb-, and Ωb- Baryon Masses
Bottom baryons decaying to a J/Ï meson and a hyperon are reconstructed using 1.0ââfb-1 of data collected in 2011 with the LHCb detector. Significant Îb0âJ/ÏÎ, Îb-âJ/ÏÎ- and Ωb-âJ/ÏΩ- signals are observed and the corresponding masses are measured to be M(Îb0)=5619.53±0.13(stat.)±0.45(syst.)ââMeV/c2, M(Îb-)=5795.8±0.9(stat.)±0.4(syst.)ââMeV/c2, M(Ωb-)=6046.0±2.2(stat.)±0.5(syst.)ââMeV/c2, while the differences with respect to the Îb0 mass are M(Îb-)-M(Îb0)=176.2±0.9(stat.)±0.1(syst.)ââMeV/c2, M(Ωb-)-M(Îb0)=426.4±2.2(stat.)±0.4(syst.)ââMeV/c2. These are the most precise mass measurements of the Îb0, Îb- and Ωb- baryons to date. Averaging the above Îb0 mass measurement with that published by LHCb using 35ââpb-1 of data collected in 2010 yields M(Îb0)=5619.44±0.13(stat.)±0.38(syst.)ââMeV/c2
Genomic Surveillance of Yellow Fever Virus Epizootic in SĂŁo Paulo, Brazil, 2016 â 2018
SĂŁo Paulo, a densely inhabited state in southeast Brazil that contains the fourth most populated city in the world, recently experienced its largest yellow fever virus (YFV) outbreak in decades. YFV does not normally circulate extensively in SĂŁo Paulo, so most people were unvaccinated when the outbreak began. Surveillance in non-human primates (NHPs) is important for determining the magnitude and geographic extent of an epizootic, thereby helping to evaluate the risk of YFV spillover to humans. Data from infected NHPs can give more accurate insights into YFV spread than when using data from human cases alone. To contextualise human cases, identify epizootic foci and uncover the rate and direction of YFV spread in SĂŁo Paulo, we generated and analysed virus genomic data and epizootic case data from NHPs in SĂŁo Paulo. We report the occurrence of three spatiotemporally distinct phases of the outbreak in SĂŁo Paulo prior to February 2018. We generated 51 new virus genomes from YFV positive cases identified in 23 different municipalities in SĂŁo Paulo, mostly sampled from NHPs between October 2016 and January 2018. Although we observe substantial heterogeneity in lineage dispersal velocities between phylogenetic branches, continuous phylogeographic analyses of generated YFV genomes suggest that YFV lineages spread in SĂŁo Paulo at a mean rate of approximately 1km per day during all phases of the outbreak. Viral lineages from the first epizootic phase in northern SĂŁo Paulo subsequently dispersed towards the south of the state to cause the second and third epizootic phases there. This alters our understanding of how YFV was introduced into the densely populated south of SĂŁo Paulo state. Our results shed light on the sylvatic transmission of YFV in highly fragmented forested regions in SĂŁo Paulo state and highlight the importance of continued surveillance of zoonotic pathogens in sentinel species
Beyond killing: can we find new ways to manage infection?
International audienceThe antibiotic pipeline is running dry and infectious disease remains a major threat to public health. An efficient strategy to stay ahead of rapidly adapting pathogens should include approaches that replace, complement, or enhance the effect of both current and novel antimicrobial compounds. In recent years, a number of innovative approaches managing disease without the aid of traditional antibiotics and without eliminating the pathogens directly have emerged. These include disabling pathogen virulence-factors, increasing host tissue damage control, or altering the microbiota to provide colonisation resistance, immune resistance or disease tolerance against pathogens. We discuss the therapeutic potential of these approaches and examine their possible consequences for pathogen evolution. To guarantee a longer half-life of these alternatives to directly killing pathogens, and to gain a full understanding of their population-level consequences, we encourage future work to incorporate evolutionary perspectives into the development of these treatment
