Improved Bounds on the Phase Transition for the Hard-Core Model in 2-Dimensions
For the hard-core lattice gas model defined on independent sets weighted by
an activity , we study the critical activity
for the uniqueness/non-uniqueness threshold on the 2-dimensional integer
lattice . The conjectured value of the critical activity is
approximately . Until recently, the best lower bound followed from
algorithmic results of Weitz (2006). Weitz presented an FPTAS for approximating
the partition function for graphs of constant maximum degree when
where is the
infinite, regular tree of degree . His result established a certain
decay of correlations property called strong spatial mixing (SSM) on
by proving that SSM holds on its self-avoiding walk tree
where and is an ordering on the neighbors of vertex . As

Plasma formation from ultracold Rydberg gases
Recent experiments have demonstrated the spontaneous evolution of a gas of
ultracold Rydberg atoms into an expanding ultracold plasma, as well as the
reverse process of plasma recombination into highly excited atomic states.
Treating the evolution of the plasma on the basis of kinetic equations, while
ionization/excitation and recombination are incorporated using rate equations,
we have investigated theoretically the Rydberg-to-plasma transition. Including
the influence of spatial correlations on the plasma dynamics in an approximate
way we find that ionic correlations change the results only quantitatively but
not qualitatively
Probing Primordial Non-Gaussianity with Large-Scale Structure
We consider primordial non-Gaussianity due to quadratic corrections in the
gravitational potential parametrized by a non-linear coupling parameter fnl. We
study constraints on fnl from measurements of the galaxy bispectrum in redshift
surveys. Using estimates for idealized survey geometries of the 2dF and SDSS
surveys and realistic ones from SDSS mock catalogs, we show that it is possible
to probe |fnl|~100, after marginalization over bias parameters. We apply our
methods to the galaxy bispectrum measured from the PSCz survey, and obtain a
2sigma-constraint |fnl|< 1800. We estimate that an all sky redshift survey up
to z~1 can probe |fnl|~1. We also consider the use of cluster abundance to
constrain fnl and find that in order to be sensitive to |fnl|~100, cluster
masses need to be determined with an accuracy of a few percent, assuming
perfect knowledge of the mass function and cosmological parameters.Comment: 15 pages, 7 figure
Magnetic trapping of metastable atomic strontium
We report the magnetic trapping of metastable atomic strontium. Atoms
are cooled in a magneto-optical trap (MOT) operating on the dipole allowed
transition at 461 nm. Decay via
continuously loads a magnetic trap formed by the quadrupole magnetic field of
the MOT. Over atoms at a density of cm and
temperature of 1 mK are trapped. The atom temperature is significantly lower
than what would be expected from the kinetic and potential energy of atoms as
they are transferred from the MOT. This suggests that thermalization and
evaporative cooling are occurring in the magnetic trap.Comment: This paper has been accepted by PR
Ω-Arithmetization of Ellipses
International audienceMulti-resolution analysis and numerical precision problems are very important subjects in fields like image analysis or geometrical modeling. In the continuation of our previous works, we propose to apply the method of Ω-arithmetization to ellipses. We obtain a discrete multi-resolution representation of arcs of ellipses. The corresponding algorithms are completely constructive and thus, can be exactly translated into functional computer programs. Moreover, we give a global condition for the connectivity of the discrete curves generated by the method at every scale
Systematics of proton emission
A very simple formula is presented that relates the logarithm of the
half-life, corrected by the centrifugal barrier, with the Coulomb parameter in
proton decay processes. The corresponding experimental data lie on two straight
lines which appear as a result of a sudden change in the nuclear shape marking
two regions of deformation independently of the angular momentum of the
outgoing proton. This feature provides a powerful tool to assign experimentally

Narcissism normalisation: tourism influences and sustainability implications
The concept of narcissism normalisation suggests that individuals and societies are becoming more narcissistic due to various cultural influences. Tourism is reviewed here as one such possible influence. Exploitative, entitled and exhibitionistic tendencies associated with narcissism are wellestablished
in tourism. Yet tourism is also an intimate, communal and satisfying activity which may counteract narcissism. Increases in narcissism
have significant implications from a sustainable tourism perspective. Narcissism is associated with exploitative and entitled behaviours that over time cause significant harm to those people and landscapes that
come into contact with. Narcissism appears to be incompatible with principles of sustainability and the challenges this poses for the industry are reviewed, while the opportunities are also explored. There are signs that narcissism, particularly those aspects relating to exhibitionism, can be
co-opted to benefit sustainable development
Finite Temperature Properties of Quantum Antiferromagnets in a Uniform Magnetic Field in One and Two Dimensions
Consider a -dimensional antiferromagnet with a quantum disordered ground
state and a gap to bosonic excitations with non-zero spin. In a finite external
magnetic field, this antiferromagnet will undergo a phase transition to a
ground state with non-zero magnetization, describable as the condensation of a
dilute gas of bosons. The finite temperature properties of the Bose gas in the
vicinity of this transition are argued to obey a hypothesis of ZERO
SCALE-FACTOR UNIVERSALITY for , with logarithmic violations in .

Search for direct production of charginos and neutralinos in events with three leptons and missing transverse momentum in √s = 7 TeV pp collisions with the ATLAS detector
A search for the direct production of charginos and neutralinos in final states with three electrons or muons and missing transverse momentum is presented. The analysis is based on 4.7 fb−1 of proton–proton collision data delivered by the Large Hadron Collider and recorded with the ATLAS detector. Observations are consistent with Standard Model expectations in three signal regions that are either depleted or enriched in Z-boson decays. Upper limits at 95% confidence level are set in R-parity conserving phenomenological minimal supersymmetric models and in simplified models, significantly extending previous results
Measurement of D*+/- meson production in jets from pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV with the ATLAS detector
This paper reports a measurement of D*+/- meson production in jets from
proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of sqrt(s) = 7 TeV at the
CERN Large Hadron Collider. The measurement is based on a data sample recorded
with the ATLAS detector with an integrated luminosity of 0.30 pb^-1 for jets
with transverse momentum between 25 and 70 GeV in the pseudorapidity range
|eta| < 2.5. D*+/- mesons found in jets are fully reconstructed in the decay
chain: D*+ -> D0pi+, D0 -> K-pi+, and its charge conjugate. The production rate
is found to be N(D*+/-)/N(jet) = 0.025 +/- 0.001(stat.) +/- 0.004(syst.) for
D*+/- mesons that carry a fraction z of the jet momentum in the range 0.3 < z <
1. Monte Carlo predictions fail to describe the data at small values of z, and
