The impact of divided attention on the Ganong effect as a function of age

    Get PDF
The Ganong effect refers to the impact of lexical knowledge on auditory perception of words when stimuli are acoustically ambiguous. When adult listeners are presented with words that include acoustically ambiguous speech sounds they are more likely to shift their perception to be consistent with a real word rather than a non-word. The current study explored the Ganong effect with adults and children aged 7 to 9 years, and examined whether divided attention differentially impacted the Ganong effect across the groups. It was hypothesized that both children and adults would exhibit the Ganong effect, but that adults would show the effect to a greater extent than the children. The adults and children were presented words and syllables beginning with a velar plosive (/k/-/g/) that varied by voice-onset-times (VOT) from 0 to 80 ms and comprised three acoustic continua: /kɪft/- gift/, /kɪs/-/gɪs/, and /kɪ/-/gɪ/. The adults and children were asked to identify the initial consonant in stimuli during undivided and divided attention conditions. Both children and adults exhibited the Ganong effect in all listening conditions, but there was no additional lexical drift observed in the divided attention condition. The adults and children did not differ significantly on the tasks

Resident and teacher perceptions of the preceptor field note: a qualitative analysis

Implication Statement Assessment of clinical teachers is a requirement by family medicine residency programs in Canada. This facilitates feedback to teachers and ensures the curriculum is delivered in an efficient and safe way. To protect resident confidentiality, preceptors often receive their teaching evaluations months to years later. Teachers have requested shorter feedback loops, greater numbers, and more frequent assessments to improve their skills. The preceptor field note (PFN) is a tool that allows learners to evaluate teachers during a single encounter providing more frequent and immediate feedback. This study documents teachers’ and residents’ initial impressions of the first iteration of the PFN

This distinguished volume once again provides an up-to-date guide to the American stage from its beginnings to the present. The book covers not only classic works (such as Death of a Salesman) but also many commercially successful plays (such as Getting Gertie's Garter), plus entries on foreign figures that have influenced our dramatic development (from Shakespeare to Beckett and Pinter). New entries include recent plays such as Angels in America and Six Degrees of Separation, performers such as Eric Bogosian and Bill Irwin, playwrights like David Henry Hwang and Wendy Wasserstein, and relevant developments and issues including AIDS in American theatre, theatrical producing by Disney, and the rise in solo performance
