    Motionless of snail Hydrobia ulvae (Pennant) as response to sediment toxicity and its consequences for the post-exposure feeding

    Post-exposure feeding and motionless may be useful endpoints for assessing toxicity. The present study aimed to examine (i) the immobility of the estuarine snail Hydrobia ulvae resulting from short-term exposure to copper-spiked sediment, and subsequently, (ii) the potential application of post-exposure feeding (indirectly measured as pellets excreted) as an ecotoxicological response associated with motionlessness. Mobility and post-exposure feeding were influenced by copper contamination. Motionless was noticeable above the concentration of 200 Îźg Cu g-1, where 40% of the organisms were inactive. Practically all the organisms remained active at the two lowest concentrations: 40 (control) and 60 Îźg Cu g-1. For 400 and 800 Îźg Cu g-1 the motionless was generally higher than 50%. Mortality higher than 25% was observed at 200, 400 and 800 Îźg Cu g-1, with values of 27, 40 and 60%, respectively. The feeding inhibition values showed an increasing inhibition from 20% at the lowest concentration (60 Îźg Cu g-1), up to 59% at 400 Îźg Cu g-1; at concentration of 800 Îźg Cu g-1, although the physical activity inhibition had reached 67%, the post-exposure feeding was 1.5 higher in relation to the control. Probably, the starvation period due to motionless during exposure seems to increase the post-exposure feeding and egestion when food was provided; alternatively, increased pellet production could also indicate a detoxification process

    Infinitesimal Lyapunov functions for singular flows

    We present an extension of the notion of infinitesimal Lyapunov function to singular flows, and from this technique we deduce a characterization of partial/sectional hyperbolic sets. In absence of singularities, we can also characterize uniform hyperbolicity.     Guillain-BarrĂŠ syndrome: a century of progress

    In 1916, Guillain, Barré and Strohl reported on two cases of acute flaccid paralysis with high cerebrospinal fluid protein levels and normal cell counts — novel findings that identified the disease we now know as Guillain–Barré syndrome (GBS). 100 years on, we have made great progress with the clinical and pathological characterization of GBS. Early clinicopathological and animal studies indicated that GBS was an immune-mediated demyelinating disorder, and that severe GBS could result in secondary axonal injury; the current treatments of plasma exchange and intravenous immunoglobulin, which were developed in the 1980s, are based on this premise. Subsequent work has, however, shown that primary axonal injury can be the underlying disease. The association of Campylobacter jejuni strains has led to confirmation that anti-ganglioside antibodies are pathogenic and that axonal GBS involves an antibody and complement-mediated disruption of nodes of Ranvier, neuromuscular junctions and other neuronal and glial membranes. Now, ongoing clinical trials of the complement inhibitor eculizumab are the first targeted immunotherapy in GBS

    Pentavalent antimonials are the first drug of choice in the treatment of tegumentary leishmaniasis. Data on ototoxicity related with such drugs is scarcely available in literature, leading us to develop a study on cochleovestibular functions. Case Report: A case of a tegumentary leishmaniasis patient, a 78-year-old man who presented a substantial increase in auditory threshold with tinnitus and severe rotatory dizziness during the treatment with meglumine antimoniate, is reported. These symptoms worsened in two weeks after treatment was interrupted. Conclusion: Dizziness and tinnitus had already been related to meglumine antimoniate. However, this is the first well documented case of cochlear-vestibular toxicity related to meglumine antimoniate

    Heat transfer in solar absorber plates with micro-channels

    Analytical, computational and experimental studies were carried out to investigate heat transfer and fluid flow in micro-channel absorber plates for compact (thin and light-weight) solar thermal collectors. The main objective of the work was to study different design and/or operating scenarios as well as study the significance of various micro-scaling effects. Analytical investigation showed that, under similar conditions, the proposed design yields a much higher fin efficiency, F and collector efficiency factor, F’ compared with the conventional solar collector design. An analytical model combining convective heat transfer in the collector fluid with axial conduction in the metal plate was developed. The predicted plate temperature profiles from the analytical model were in close agreement with the measured profiles. The model further showed that axial thermal conduction can significantly alter the plate temperature profile. Experiments were designed to represent real life operation of the proposed system. A CFD study, using the same design and operating parameters, produced results comparable with experiments. This numerical simulation also gave further insight into the heat transfer and fluid flow patterns in the micro-channel plate. The effect of channel cross section geometry was studied. The Nusselt number was observed to increase as the aspect ratio approached unity. Measured friction factors were similar in trend to the predictions for rectangular channels, although the overall rise in fluid temperature resulted in slightly lower friction factors. Thermal performance reduced slightly with increase in hydraulic diameter. The significance of various scaling effects was also investigated experimentally and numerically. Most of the typical scaling effects such as viscous dissipation and entrance effects were found to be insignificant however, conjugate heat transfer, surface boundary condition, surface finish and measurement uncertainties could be significant. The results showed a Reynolds number dependent Nusselt number which has been attributed to axial thermal conduction. It was also observed that only three walls were transferring heat; the walls of heat transfer had a uniform peripheral temperature while the heat flux varied peripherally. The closest simplified thermal boundary condition to represent heat transfer in these channels is the H1 with three (3) walls transferring heat. Increased surface roughness (obtained by using an etching technique to create the channels) was found to have a detrimental effect on heat transfer. The results showed that thermal improvement can be achieved by increasing the fluid velocity; however, pumping the thermal fluid above a pump power per plate area of 0.3 W/m2 resulted in marginal improvement. In practice, optimum microchannel geometry in plates should be sized based on fluid properties and operating conditions. The micro-channels should also have thin walls to minimise the effects of conjugate heat transfer. A Photovoltaic pump should be installed alongside the collector in order to provide pumping power required and minimise the overall fluid temperature rise. The results are beneficial for the design of micro-channel absorber plates for low heat flux operation up to 1000W/m2

    Search for new phenomena in final states with an energetic jet and large missing transverse momentum in pp collisions at √ s = 8 TeV with the ATLAS detector

    Results of a search for new phenomena in final states with an energetic jet and large missing transverse momentum are reported. The search uses 20.3 fb−1 of √ s = 8 TeV data collected in 2012 with the ATLAS detector at the LHC. Events are required to have at least one jet with pT > 120 GeV and no leptons. Nine signal regions are considered with increasing missing transverse momentum requirements between Emiss T > 150 GeV and Emiss T > 700 GeV. Good agreement is observed between the number of events in data and Standard Model expectations. The results are translated into exclusion limits on models with either large extra spatial dimensions, pair production of weakly interacting dark matter candidates, or production of very light gravitinos in a gauge-mediated supersymmetric model.     X-ray emission from the Sombrero galaxy: discrete sources

    We present a study of discrete X-ray sources in and around the bulge-dominated, massive Sa galaxy, Sombrero (M104), based on new and archival Chandra observations with a total exposure of ~200 ks. With a detection limit of L_X = 1E37 erg/s and a field of view covering a galactocentric radius of ~30 kpc (11.5 arcminute), 383 sources are detected. Cross-correlation with Spitler et al.'s catalogue of Sombrero globular clusters (GCs) identified from HST/ACS observations reveals 41 X-rays sources in GCs, presumably low-mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs). We quantify the differential luminosity functions (LFs) for both the detected GC and field LMXBs, whose power-low indices (~1.1 for the GC-LF and ~1.6 for field-LF) are consistent with previous studies for elliptical galaxies. With precise sky positions of the GCs without a detected X-ray source, we further quantify, through a fluctuation analysis, the GC LF at fainter luminosities down to 1E35 erg/s. The derived index rules out a faint-end slope flatter than 1.1 at a 2 sigma significance, contrary to recent findings in several elliptical galaxies and the bulge of M31. On the other hand, the 2-6 keV unresolved emission places a tight constraint on the field LF, implying a flattened index of ~1.0 below 1E37 erg/s. We also detect 101 sources in the halo of Sombrero. The presence of these sources cannot be interpreted as galactic LMXBs whose spatial distribution empirically follows the starlight. Their number is also higher than the expected number of cosmic AGNs (52+/-11 [1 sigma]) whose surface density is constrained by deep X-ray surveys. We suggest that either the cosmic X-ray background is unusually high in the direction of Sombrero, or a distinct population of X-ray sources is present in the halo of Sombrero.Comment: 11 figures, 5 tables, ApJ in pres
