Exploring User-Provided Connectivity - A Simple Model
The advent of cheap and ubiquitous wireless access has introduced a number of new connectivity paradigms. This paper investigates one of them, user-provided connectivity or UPC. In contrast to traditional infrastructure-based connectivity, e.g., connectivity through the up-front build-out of expensive base-stations, UPC realizes connectivity organically as users join and expand its coverage. The low(er) deployment cost this affords is one of its main attractions. Conversely, the disadvantages of connectivity sharing and a high barrier-to-entry from low initial penetration create strong disincentives to its adoption. The paper’s contributions are in formulating and solving a simple model that captures key aspects of UPC adoption, and in articulating guidelines to make it successful. For analytical tractability, the model is arguably simplistic, but the robustness of its findings is demonstrated numerically across a wide range of more general (and more realistic) configuration
Characterization of active and total fungal communities in the atmosphere over the Amazon rainforest
Fungi are ubiquitous in the atmosphere and may play an important role in atmospheric processes. We investigated the composition and diversity of fungal communities over the Amazon rainforest canopy and compared these communities to fungal communities 5 found in terrestrial environments. We characterized the total fungal community and the metabolically active portion of the community using high-throughout DNA and RNA sequencing and compared these data to predictions generated by a mass-balance model. We found that the total community was primarily comprised of fungi from the phylum Basidiomycota. In contrast, the active community was primarily composed of 10 members of the phylum Ascomycota and included a high relative abundance of lichen fungi, which were not detected in the total community. The relative abundance of Basidiomycota and Ascomycota in the total and active communities was consistent with our model predictions, suggesting that this result was driven by the relative size and number of spores produced by these groups. When compared to other environments, 15 fungal communities in the atmosphere were most similar to communities found in tropical soils and leaf surfaces, suggesting that inputs of fungi to the atmosphere are from local, rather than distant, sources. Our results demonstrate that there are significant differences in the composition of the total and active fungal communities in the atmosphere, and that lichen fungi, which have been shown to be efficient ice nucleators, 20 may be abundant members of active atmospheric fungal communities over the forest canopy
Cornerstones of Sampling of Operator Theory
This paper reviews some results on the identifiability of classes of
operators whose Kohn-Nirenberg symbols are band-limited (called band-limited
operators), which we refer to as sampling of operators. We trace the motivation
and history of the subject back to the original work of the third-named author
in the late 1950s and early 1960s, and to the innovations in spread-spectrum
communications that preceded that work. We give a brief overview of the NOMAC
(Noise Modulation and Correlation) and Rake receivers, which were early
implementations of spread-spectrum multi-path wireless communication systems.
We examine in detail the original proof of the third-named author
characterizing identifiability of channels in terms of the maximum time and
Doppler spread of the channel, and do the same for the subsequent
generalization of that work by Bello.
The mathematical limitations inherent in the proofs of Bello and the third
author are removed by using mathematical tools unavailable at the time. We
survey more recent advances in sampling of operators and discuss the
implications of the use of periodically-weighted delta-trains as identifiers
for operator classes that satisfy Bello's criterion for identifiability,
leading to new insights into the theory of finite-dimensional Gabor systems. We
present novel results on operator sampling in higher dimensions, and review
implications and generalizations of the results to stochastic operators, MIMO
systems, and operators with unknown spreading domains
Isospin symmetry in the odd-odd mirror nuclei 44V/44Sc
Excited states in the N=Z-2 nucleus 44V have been observed for the first time. The states have been identified through particle-γ-γ coincidence relationships and comparison with analog states in the mirror nucleus 44Sc. Mirror energy differences have been extracted and compared to state-of-the-art shell-model calculations which include charge-symmetry-breaking forces. Observed decay pattern asymmetries between the mirror pair are discussed in terms of core excitations, electromagnetic spin-orbit effects and isospin mixing
Mixed Hodge polynomials of character varieties
We calculate the E-polynomials of certain twisted GL(n,C)-character varieties
M_n of Riemann surfaces by counting points over finite fields using the
character table of the finite group of Lie-type GL(n,F_q) and a theorem proved
in the appendix by N. Katz. We deduce from this calculation several geometric
results, for example, the value of the topological Euler characteristic of the
associated PGL(n,C)-character variety. The calculation also leads to several
conjectures about the cohomology of M_n: an explicit conjecture for its mixed
Hodge polynomial; a conjectured curious Hard Lefschetz theorem and a conjecture
relating the pure part to absolutely indecomposable representations of a

The -dependence of the generalised Gerasimov-Drell-Hearn integral for the deuteron, proton and neutron
The Gerasimov-Drell-Hearn (GDH) sum rule connects the anomalous contribution
to the magnetic moment of the target nucleus with an energy-weighted integral
of the difference of the helicity-dependent photoabsorption cross sections. The
data collected by HERMES with a deuterium target are presented together with a
re-analysis of previous measurements on the proton. This provides a measurement
of the generalised GDH integral covering simultaneously the nucleon-resonance
and the deep inelastic scattering regions. The contribution of the
nucleon-resonance region is seen to decrease rapidly with increasing . The
DIS contribution is sizeable over the full measured range, even down to the
lowest measured . As expected, at higher the data are found to be in
agreement with previous measurements of the first moment of . From data on
the deuteron and proton, the GDH integral for the neutron has been derived and
the proton--neutron difference evaluated. This difference is found to satisfy
the fundamental Bjorken sum rule at GeV.Comment: 12 pages, 10 figure
Search for a W' boson decaying to a bottom quark and a top quark in pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV
Results are presented from a search for a W' boson using a dataset
corresponding to 5.0 inverse femtobarns of integrated luminosity collected
during 2011 by the CMS experiment at the LHC in pp collisions at sqrt(s)=7 TeV.
The W' boson is modeled as a heavy W boson, but different scenarios for the
couplings to fermions are considered, involving both left-handed and
right-handed chiral projections of the fermions, as well as an arbitrary
mixture of the two. The search is performed in the decay channel W' to t b,
leading to a final state signature with a single lepton (e, mu), missing
transverse energy, and jets, at least one of which is tagged as a b-jet. A W'
boson that couples to fermions with the same coupling constant as the W, but to
the right-handed rather than left-handed chiral projections, is excluded for
masses below 1.85 TeV at the 95% confidence level. For the first time using LHC
data, constraints on the W' gauge coupling for a set of left- and right-handed
coupling combinations have been placed. These results represent a significant

Search for the standard model Higgs boson decaying into two photons in pp collisions at sqrt(s)=7 TeV
A search for a Higgs boson decaying into two photons is described. The
analysis is performed using a dataset recorded by the CMS experiment at the LHC
from pp collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV, which corresponds to an
integrated luminosity of 4.8 inverse femtobarns. Limits are set on the cross
section of the standard model Higgs boson decaying to two photons. The expected
exclusion limit at 95% confidence level is between 1.4 and 2.4 times the
standard model cross section in the mass range between 110 and 150 GeV. The
analysis of the data excludes, at 95% confidence level, the standard model
Higgs boson decaying into two photons in the mass range 128 to 132 GeV. The
largest excess of events above the expected standard model background is
observed for a Higgs boson mass hypothesis of 124 GeV with a local significance
of 3.1 sigma. The global significance of observing an excess with a local
significance greater than 3.1 sigma anywhere in the search range 110-150 GeV is
estimated to be 1.8 sigma. More data are required to ascertain the origin of

Search for displaced vertices arising from decays of new heavy particles in 7 TeV pp collisions at ATLAS
We present the results of a search for new, heavy particles that decay at a
significant distance from their production point into a final state containing
charged hadrons in association with a high-momentum muon. The search is
conducted in a pp-collision data sample with a center-of-mass energy of 7 TeV
and an integrated luminosity of 33 pb^-1 collected in 2010 by the ATLAS
detector operating at the Large Hadron Collider. Production of such particles
is expected in various scenarios of physics beyond the standard model. We
observe no signal and place limits on the production cross-section of
supersymmetric particles in an R-parity-violating scenario as a function of the
neutralino lifetime. Limits are presented for different squark and neutralino
