Cirugía de la columna lumbar degenerativa
En una realidad la gran demanda actual de fusiones de la columna lumbar. Los resultados clínicos obtenidos con la fusión posterolateral se ven claramente superados con las fusiones anteroposteriores. Se realiza una revisión bibliográfica de las diferentes formas de fusión de la columna lumbar y la reaparición del concepto de soporte de columna anterior. Se establecen las indicaciones y las ventajas de la fusión anteroposterior lumbar, describiéndose las posibles vías de abordaje posterior y anteriores abiertas y mínimamente invasivas. Se clasifican los modernos implantes utilizados para soporte de la columna anterior. Se detallan ventajas e inconvenientes de las vías anterior y posterior.It is a reality the increasing number of the lumbar fusions. Clinical results show that the anteroposterior lumbar fusions achieve greater success rates than the posterolateral ones. A paper review of the different ways of lumbar fusion is carried out whit the update of the anterior column support concept. Indications and advantages: posterior, anterior and minimal invasive ones. The last spine cages used for anterior column support art classified. Advantages and drawbacks of the both approaches anterior and posterior are studied
Predicting performance in team games: The automatic coach
This is an electronic version of the paper presented at the 3rd International Conference on Agents and Artificial Intelligence, held in Rome on 2011A wide range of modern videogames involves a number of players collaborating to obtain a common goal.
The way the players are teamed up is usually based on a measure of performance that makes players with a
similar level of performance play together. We propose a novel technique based on clustering over observed
behaviour in the game that seeks to exploit the particular way of playing of every player to find other players
with a gameplay such that in combination will constitute a good team, in a similar way to a human coach.
This paper describes the preliminary results using these techniques for the characterization of player and team

Local Luminous Infrared Galaxies. I. Spatially resolved observations with Spitzer/IRS
We present results from the Spitzer/IRS spectral mapping observations of 15
local luminous infrared galaxies (LIRGs). In this paper we investigate the
spatial variations of the mid-IR emission which includes: fine structure lines,
molecular hydrogen lines, polycyclic aromatic features (PAHs), continuum
emission and the 9.7um silicate feature. We also compare the nuclear and
integrated spectra. We find that the star formation takes place in extended
regions (several kpc) as probed by the PAH emission as well as the [NeII] and
[NeIII] emissions. The behavior of the integrated PAH emission and 9.7um
silicate feature is similar to that of local starburst galaxies. We also find
that the minima of the [NeIII]/[NeII] ratio tends to be located at the nuclei
and its value is lower than that of HII regions in our LIRGs and nearby
galaxies. It is likely that increased densities in the nuclei of LIRGs are
responsible for the smaller nuclear [NeIII]/[NeII] ratios. This includes the
possibility that some of the most massive stars in the nuclei are still
embedded in ultracompact HII regions. In a large fraction of our sample the
11.3um PAH emission appears more extended than the dust 5.5um continuum
emission. We find a dependency of the 11.3um PAH/7.7 um PAH and [NeII]/11.3um
PAH ratios with the age of the stellar populations. Smaller and larger ratios
respectively indicate recent star formation. The estimated warm (300 K < T <
1000 K) molecular hydrogen masses are of the order of 10^8 M_Sun, which are
similar to those found in ULIRGs, local starbursts and Seyfert galaxies.
Finally we find that the [NeII] velocity fields for most of the LIRGs in our
sample are compatible with a rotating disk at ~kpc scales, and they are in a
good agreement with H-alpha velocity fields.Comment: Comments: 52 pages, accepted for publicacion in ApJ
The Spatial Extent of (U)LIRGs in the mid-Infrared I: The Continuum Emission
We present an analysis of the extended mid-infrared (MIR) emission of the
Great Observatories All-Sky LIRG Survey (GOALS) sample based on 5-15um low
resolution spectra obtained with the IRS on Spitzer. We calculate the fraction
of extended emission as a function of wavelength for the galaxies in the
sample, FEE_lambda. We can identify 3 general types of FEE_lambda: one where it
is constant, one where features due to emission lines and PAHs appear more
extended than the continuum, and a third which is characteristic of sources
with deep silicate absorption at 9.7um. More than 30% of the galaxies have a
median FEE_lambda larger than 0.5 implying that at least half of their MIR
emission is extended. Luminous Infrared Galaxies (LIRGs) display a wide range
of FEE in their warm dust continuum (0<=FEE_13.2um<=0.85). The large values of
FEE_13.2um that we find in many LIRGs suggest that their extended MIR continuum
emission originates in scales up to 10kpc. The mean size of the LIRG cores at
13.2um is 2.6kpc. However, once the LIR of the systems reaches the threshold of
~10^11.8Lsun, all sources become clearly more compact, with FEE_13.2um<=0.2,
and their cores are unresolved. Our estimated upper limit for the core size of
ULIRGs is less than 1.5kpc. The analysis indicates that the compactness of
systems with LIR>~10^11.25Lsun strongly increases in those classified as
mergers in their final stage of interaction. The FEE_13.2um is also related to
the contribution of an active galactic nucleus (AGN) to the MIR. Galaxies which
are more AGN-dominated are less extended, independently of their LIR. We
finally find that the extent of the MIR continuum emission is correlated with
the far-IR IRAS log(f_60um/f_100um) color. This enables us to place a lower
limit to the area in a galaxy from where the cold dust emission may originate,
a prediction which can be tested soon with the Herschel Space Telescope.Comment: 18 pages, 8 figures, accepted for publication in Ap
A far-infrared spectroscopic survey of intermediate redshift (ultra) luminous infrared galaxies
We present Herschel far-IR photometry and spectroscopy as well as ground-based CO observations of an intermediate redshift (0.21 _ z _ 0.88) sample of Herschel-selected (ultra)-luminous infrared galaxies (LIR >1011.5 L_). With these measurements, we trace the dust continuum, far-IR atomic line emission, in particular [C ii] 157.7μm, as well as the molecular gas of z ∼ 0.3 luminous and ultraluminous infrared galaxies (LIRGs and ULIRGs) and perform a detailed investigation of the interstellar medium of the population. We find that the majority of Herschel-selected intermediate redshift (U)LIRGs have LCii/LFIR ratios that are a factor of about 10 higher than that of local ULIRGs and comparable to that of local normal and high-z star-forming galaxies. Using our sample to bridge local and high-z [C ii] observations, we find that the majority of galaxies at all redshifts and all luminosities follow an LCii−LFIR relation with a slope of unity, from which local ULIRGs and high-z active-galactic-nucleus-dominated sources are clear outliers.We also confirm that the strong anti-correlation between the LCii/LFIR ratio and the far-IR color L60/L100 observed in the local universe holds over a broad range of redshifts and luminosities, in the sense that warmer sources exhibit lower LC ii/LFIR at any epoch. Intermediate redshift ULIRGs are also characterized by large molecular gas reservoirs and by lower star formation efficiencies compared to that of local ULIRGs. The high LC ii/LFIR ratios, the moderate star formation efficiencies (LIR/L _COor LIR/MH2 ), and the relatively low dust temperatures of our sample (which are also common characteristics of high-z star-forming galaxies with ULIRG-like luminosities) indicate that the evolution of the physical properties of (U)LIRGs between the present day and z > 1 is already significant by z ∼ 0.3
Barred Galaxies in the Abell 901/2 Supercluster with STAGES
We present a study of bar and host disk evolution in a dense cluster
environment, based on a sample of ~800 bright (MV <= -18) galaxies in the Abell
901/2 supercluster at z~0.165. We use HST ACS F606W imaging from the STAGES
survey, and data from Spitzer, XMM-Newton, and COMBO-17. We identify and
characterize bars through ellipse-fitting, and other morphological features
through visual classification. (1) We explore three commonly used methods for
selecting disk galaxies. We find 625, 485, and 353 disk galaxies, respectively,
via visual classification, a single component S'ersic cut (n <= 2.5), and a
blue-cloud cut. In cluster environments, the latter two methods miss 31% and
51%, respectively, of visually-identified disks. (2) For moderately inclined
disks, the three methods of disk selection yield a similar global optical bar
fraction (f_bar-opt) of 34% +10%/-3%, 31% +10%/-3%, and 30% +10%/-3%,
respectively. (3) f_bar-opt rises in brighter galaxies and those which appear
to have no significant bulge component. Within a given absolute magnitude bin,
f_bar-opt is higher in visually-selected disk galaxies that have no bulge as
opposed to those with bulges. For a given morphological class, f_bar-opt rises
at higher luminosities. (4) For bright early-types, as well as faint late-type
systems with no evident bulge, the optical bar fraction in the Abell 901/2
clusters is comparable within a factor of 1.1 to 1.4 to that of field galaxies
at lower redshifts (5) Between the core and the virial radius of the cluster at
intermediate environmental densities, the optical bar fraction does not appear
to depend strongly on the local environment density and varies at most by a
factor of ~1.3. We discuss the implications of our results for the evolution of

First LIGO search for gravitational wave bursts from cosmic (super)strings
We report on a matched-filter search for gravitational wave bursts from
cosmic string cusps using LIGO data from the fourth science run (S4) which took
place in February and March 2005. No gravitational waves were detected in 14.9
days of data from times when all three LIGO detectors were operating. We
interpret the result in terms of a frequentist upper limit on the rate of
gravitational wave bursts and use the limits on the rate to constrain the
parameter space (string tension, reconnection probability, and loop sizes) of

Stacked Search for Gravitational Waves from the 2006 SGR 1900+14 Storm
We present the results of a LIGO search for short-duration gravitational
waves (GWs) associated with the 2006 March 29 SGR 1900+14 storm. A new search
method is used, "stacking'' the GW data around the times of individual
soft-gamma bursts in the storm to enhance sensitivity for models in which
multiple bursts are accompanied by GW emission. We assume that variation in the
time difference between burst electromagnetic emission and potential burst GW
emission is small relative to the GW signal duration, and we time-align GW
excess power time-frequency tilings containing individual burst triggers to
their corresponding electromagnetic emissions. We use two GW emission models in
our search: a fluence-weighted model and a flat (unweighted) model for the most
electromagnetically energetic bursts. We find no evidence of GWs associated
with either model. Model-dependent GW strain, isotropic GW emission energy
E_GW, and \gamma = E_GW / E_EM upper limits are estimated using a variety of
assumed waveforms. The stacking method allows us to set the most stringent
model-dependent limits on transient GW strain published to date. We find E_GW
upper limit estimates (at a nominal distance of 10 kpc) of between 2x10^45 erg
and 6x10^50 erg depending on waveform type. These limits are an order of
magnitude lower than upper limits published previously for this storm and
overlap with the range of electromagnetic energies emitted in SGR giant flares.Comment: 7 pages, 3 figure
Sensitivity to Gravitational Waves from Compact Binary Coalescences Achieved during LIGO's Fifth and Virgo's First Science Run
We summarize the sensitivity achieved by the LIGO and Virgo gravitational
wave detectors for compact binary coalescence (CBC) searches during LIGO's
fifth science run and Virgo's first science run. We present noise spectral
density curves for each of the four detectors that operated during these
science runs which are representative of the typical performance achieved by
the detectors for CBC searches. These spectra are intended for release to the
public as a summary of detector performance for CBC searches during these

Swift follow-up observations of candidate gravitational-wave transient events
We present the first multi-wavelength follow-up observations of two candidate
gravitational-wave (GW) transient events recorded by LIGO and Virgo in their
2009-2010 science run. The events were selected with low latency by the network
of GW detectors and their candidate sky locations were observed by the Swift
observatory. Image transient detection was used to analyze the collected
electromagnetic data, which were found to be consistent with background.
Off-line analysis of the GW data alone has also established that the selected
GW events show no evidence of an astrophysical origin; one of them is
consistent with background and the other one was a test, part of a "blind
injection challenge". With this work we demonstrate the feasibility of rapid
follow-ups of GW transients and establish the sensitivity improvement joint
electromagnetic and GW observations could bring. This is a first step toward an
electromagnetic follow-up program in the regime of routine detections with the
advanced GW instruments expected within this decade. In that regime
multi-wavelength observations will play a significant role in completing the
astrophysical identification of GW sources. We present the methods and results
from this first combined analysis and discuss its implications in terms of
