Examining the relationship between pubertal stage, adolescent health behaviours and stress
Background. This paper examines the associations between puberty and three important health behavlours (smoking, food intake and exercise) and explores whether these associations are mediated by puberty's relationship to stress and psychological difficulties.Method. Data were taken from the first year of the ongoing, 5-year, Health and Behaviours in Teenagers Study (HABITS). This is a school-based study set in 36 schools in London. In the first year of the study, 4320 students (2578 boys, 1742 girls) in their first year of secondary education took part.Results. Among girls, being more pubertally advanced was associated with a greater likelihood of having tried smoking. Among boys, being more pubertally advanced was associated with a greater likelihood of having tried smoking, a higher intake of high-fat food and higher levels of exercise. More pubertally advanced girls experienced more stress but not more psychological difficulties. There were no associations between puberty and either stress or psychological difficulties in boys. Stress and psychological difficulties were associated with health behaviours in girls and boys, but neither of these factors mediated the relationship between pubertal stage and health behaviours found in girls.Conclusions. These results suggest that the onset of puberty has a marked effect on the development of health behaviours. Puberty was related to an acceleration of the development of unhealthy behaviours, except for exercise behaviour in boys, where advanced puberty was associated with more exercise. These changes were unrelated to adolescent issues of stress and a causal explanation for these associations must be sought elsewhere
On the mass segregation of stars and brown dwarfs in Taurus
We use the new minimum spanning tree (MST) method to look for mass
segregation in the Taurus association. The method computes the ratio of MST
lengths of any chosen subset of objects, including the most massive stars and
brown dwarfs, to the MST lengths of random sets of stars and brown dwarfs in
the cluster. This mass segregation ratio (Lambda_MSR) enables a quantitative
measure of the spatial distribution of high-mass and low-mass stars, and brown
dwarfs to be made in Taurus.
We find that the most massive stars in Taurus are inversely mass segregated,
with Lambda_MSR = 0.70 +/- 0.10 (Lambda_MSR = 1 corresponds to no mass
segregation), which differs from the strong mass segregation signatures found
in more dense and massive clusters such as Orion. The brown dwarfs in Taurus
are not mass segregated, although we find evidence that some low-mass stars
are, with an Lambda_MSR = 1.25 +/- 0.15. Finally, we compare our results to
previous measures of the spatial distribution of stars and brown dwarfs in

Astro2020 Science White Paper: Triggered High-Priority Observations of Dynamic Solar System Phenomena
Unexpected dynamic phenomena have surprised solar system observers in the
past and have led to important discoveries about solar system workings.
Observations at the initial stages of these events provide crucial information
on the physical processes at work. We advocate for long-term/permanent programs
on ground-based and space-based telescopes of all sizes - including Extremely
Large Telescopes (ELTs) - to conduct observations of high-priority dynamic
phenomena, based on a predefined set of triggering conditions. These programs
will ensure that the best initial dataset of the triggering event are taken;
separate additional observing programs will be required to study the temporal
evolution of these phenomena. While not a comprehensive list, the following are
notional examples of phenomena that are rare, that cannot be anticipated, and
that provide high-impact advances to our understandings of planetary processes.
Examples include: new cryovolcanic eruptions or plumes on ocean worlds; impacts
on Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, or Neptune; extreme eruptions on Io; convective
superstorms on Saturn, Uranus, or Neptune; collisions within the asteroid belt
or other small-body populations; discovery of an interstellar object passing
through our solar system (e.g. 'Oumuamua); and responses of planetary
atmospheres to major solar flares or coronal mass ejections.Comment: Astro2020 white pape
The same, but different: Stochasticity in binary destruction
Observations of binaries in clusters tend to be of visual binaries with
separations of 10s - 100s au. Such binaries are 'intermediates' and their
destruction or survival depends on the exact details of their individual
dynamical history. We investigate the stochasticity of the destruction of such
binaries and the differences between the initial and processed populations
using N-body simulations. We concentrate on Orion Nebula Cluster-like clusters,
where the observed binary separation distribution ranges from 62 - 620 au.
We find that, starting from the same initial binary population in
statistically identical clusters, the number of intermediate binaries that are
destroyed after 1 Myr can vary by a factor of >2, and that the resulting
separation distributions can be statistically completely different in initially
substructured clusters. We also find that the mass ratio distributions are
altered (destroying more low mass ratio systems), but not as significantly as
the binary fractions or separation distributions. We conclude that finding very
different intermediate (visual) binary populations in different clusters does
not provide conclusive evidence that the initial populations were different.Comment: 11 pages, 7 figures, accepted for publication in MNRA
The evolution of binary populations in cool, clumpy star clusters
Observations and theory suggest that star clusters can form in a subvirial
(cool) state and are highly substructured. Such initial conditions have been
proposed to explain the level of mass segregation in clusters through dynamics,
and have also been successful in explaining the origin of trapezium-like
systems. In this paper we investigate, using N-body simulations, whether such a
dynamical scenario is consistent with the observed binary properties in the
Orion Nebula Cluster (ONC). We find that several different primordial binary
populations are consistent with the overall fraction and separation
distribution of visual binaries in the ONC (in the range 67 - 670 au), and that
these binary systems are heavily processed. The substructured, cool-collapse
scenario requires a primordial binary fraction approaching 100 per cent. We
find that the most important factor in processing the primordial binaries is
the initial level of substructure; a highly substructured cluster processes up
to 20 per cent more systems than a less substructured cluster because of
localised pockets of high stellar density in the substructure. Binaries are
processed in the substructure before the cluster reaches its densest phase,
suggesting that even clusters remaining in virial equilibrium or undergoing
supervirial expansion would dynamically alter their primordial binary
population. Therefore even some expanding associations may not preserve their

Publicity, punishment and protection: the role(s) of adverse publicity in consumer policy
This paper argues that adverse publicity can fulfil two crucial roles in consumer protection law and policy. First, it can operate as an effective regulatory sanction in its own right; secondly it can play a vital role in helping consumers to exert market discipline by making informed choices about suppliers. However, there are significant risks to using adverse publicity to achieve these ends and it is imperative that any regulatory regime addresses these. Studying this topic now is particularly important for three main reasons. First, there has been widespread recognition that the regulatory offence, typically backed up with fines, is not the most effective form of sanction. More flexible, targeted and responsive options are required. Secondly, there is now ample evidence that regulated information, for example in the form of mandatory disclosure, frequently fails to help consumers to make fully informed choices. Finally, there are some highly significant very recent examples of enforcers using publicity in ways that can be viewed both as a sanction and as an information tool. The need to sanction responsively and to bolster consumer sovereignty demonstrates the potential for adverse publicity as a tool of consumer protection policy
Plasmacytoid Dendritic Cell Infection and Sensing Capacity during Pathogenic and Nonpathogenic Simian Immunodeficiency Virus Infection.
International audienceHuman immunodeficiency virus (HIV) in humans and simian immunodeficiency virus (SIV) in macaques (MAC) lead to chronic inflammation and AIDS. Natural hosts, such as African green monkeys (AGM) and sooty mangabeys (SM), are protected against SIV-induced chronic inflammation and AIDS. Here, we report that AGM plasmacytoid dendritic cells (pDC) express extremely low levels of CD4, unlike MAC and human pDC. Despite this, AGM pDC efficiently sensed SIVagm, but not heterologous HIV/SIV isolates, indicating a virus-host adaptation. Moreover, both AGM and SM pDC were found to be, in contrast to MAC pDC, predominantly negative for CCR5. Despite such limited CD4 and CCR5 expression, lymphoid tissue pDC were infected to a degree similar to that seen with CD4(+) T cells in both MAC and AGM. Altogether, our finding of efficient pDC infection by SIV in vivo identifies pDC as a potential viral reservoir in lymphoid tissues. We discovered low expression of CD4 on AGM pDC, which did not preclude efficient sensing of host-adapted viruses. Therefore, pDC infection and efficient sensing are not prerequisites for chronic inflammation. The high level of pDC infection by SIVagm suggests that if CCR5 paucity on immune cells is important for nonpathogenesis of natural hosts, it is possibly not due to its role as a coreceptor. The ability of certain key immune cell subsets to resist infection might contribute to the asymptomatic nature of simian immunodeficiency virus (SIV) infection in its natural hosts, such as African green monkeys (AGM) and sooty mangabeys (SM). This relative resistance to infection has been correlated with reduced expression of CD4 and/or CCR5. We show that plasmacytoid dendritic cells (pDC) of natural hosts display reduced CD4 and/or CCR5 expression, unlike macaque pDC. Surprisingly, this did not protect AGM pDC, as infection levels were similar to those found in MAC pDC. Furthermore, we show that AGM pDC did not consistently produce type I interferon (IFN-I) upon heterologous SIVmac/HIV type 1 (HIV-1) encounter, while they sensed autologous SIVagm isolates. Pseudotyping SIVmac/HIV-1 overcame this deficiency, suggesting that reduced uptake of heterologous viral strains underlays this lack of sensing. Developing a model of mental health self-care support for children and young people through an integrated evaluation of available types of provision involving systematic review, meta-analysis and case study
Background
The mental health of children and young people (CYP) is a major UK public health concern. Recent policy reviews have identified that service provision for CYP with mental health needs is not as effective, responsive, accessible or child-centred as it could be. Following on from a previous National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) study into self-care support for CYP with long-term physical health needs, this study explored self-care support’s potential in CYP’s mental health.
Objectives
To identify and evaluate the types of mental health self-care support used by, and available to, CYP and their parents, and to establish how such support interfaces with statutory and non-statutory service provision.
Design
Two inter-related systematic literature reviews (an effectiveness review with meta-analysis and a perceptions review), together with a service mapping exercise and case study.
Setting
Global (systematic reviews); England and Wales (mapping exercise and case study).
Participants (case study)
Fifty-two individuals (17 CYP, 16 family members and 19 staff) were interviewed across six sites.

Review methods
Titles and abstracts of papers were screened for relevance then grouped into studies. Two independent reviewers extracted data from studies meeting the inclusion criteria. A descriptive analysis and meta-analysis were conducted for the effectiveness review; descriptive analyses were conducted for the perceptions review. These analyses were integrated to elicit a mixed-methods review.
Results
Sixty-five of 71 included studies were meta-analysable. These 65 studies elicited 71 comparisons which, when meta-analysed, suggested that self-care support interventions were effective at 6-month [standardised mean difference (SMD) = −0.20; 95% confidence interval (CI) −0.28 to −0.11] and 12-month (SMD = −0.12; 95% CI −0.17 to −0.06) follow-ups. However, judged against Cochrane criteria, the studies were mostly low quality. Key elements of self-care support identified in the perceptions review were the acquisition of knowledge and skills, peer support and the relationship with the self-care support agent; CYP also had different perceptions from adults about what is important in self-care support. The mapping exercise identified 27 providers of 33 self-care support services. According to the case study data, effective self-care support services are predicated on flexibility; straightforward access; non-judgemental, welcoming organisations and staff; the provision of time and attention; opportunities to learn and practise skills relevant to self-care; and systems of peer support.
Conclusions
Mental health self-care support interventions for CYP are modestly effective in the short to medium term. Self-care support can be conceptualised as a process which has overlap with ‘recovery’. CYP and their families want choice and flexibility in the provision of such interventions and a continued relationship with services after the nominal therapy period. Those delivering self-care support need to have specific child-centred attributes.
Future work
Future work should focus on under-represented conditions (e.g. psychosis, eating disorders, self-harm); the role of technology, leadership and readiness in self-care support; satisfaction in self-care support; the conceptualisation of self-care support in CYP’s mental health; and efficacy and cost-effectiveness
Dynamical evolution of star-forming regions
We model the dynamical evolution of star-forming regions with a wide range of initial properties.
We follow the evolution of the regions’ substructure using the Q-parameter, we search
for dynamical mass segregation using the !MSR technique, and we also quantify the evolution
of local density around stars as a function of mass using the "LDR method. The amount of
dynamical mass segregation measured by !MSR is generally only significant for subvirial and
virialized, substructured regions – which usually evolve to form bound clusters. The "LDR
method shows that massive stars attain higher local densities than the median value in all
regions, even those that are supervirial and evolve to form (unbound) associations. We also
introduce the Q − "LDR plot, which describes the evolution of spatial structure as a function
of mass-weighted local density in a star-forming region. Initially dense (>1000 stars pc−2),
bound regions always have Q > 1, "LDR > 2 after 5 Myr, whereas dense unbound regions
always have Q 2 after 5 Myr. Less dense regions (<100 stars pc−2) do not usually
exhibit "LDR > 2 values, and if relatively high local density around massive stars arises
purely from dynamics, then the Q − "LDR plot can be used to estimate the initial density of a
star-forming region
