    Vaihtoehtorahoituksen metsästys : lainmuutoksen vaikutus tuotesijoitteluun

    Uusi televisio- ja radiotoiminnan laki L 306/2010 koskien tuotesijoittelua tv- ja elokuvatuotannoissa sai lainvoiman 1.5.2010. Uudistuksen myötä on havaittavissa uusia rahoitusvaihtoehtoja sekä tv-ohjelmiin että elokuviin. Tv-mainontaan saadaan myös muutoksia ja vastikkeellinen tuotesijoittelu on sallittu. Piilomainonnan aika on ohi ja on aika astua television renessanssiin. It-televisio tulee mullistamaan koko alaa. Sen vaikutuksia voi olla esim. katkomainonnan hiipuminen. Mainostajat voivat uuden lain myötä mainostaa tuotteensa, imagonsa tv-ohjelman sisällössä. Opinnäytetyön lähtökohta oli tutkia ja etsiä vaihtoehtorahoituslähteitä tuotantoihin. Koska AV-direktiivi oli muuttumassa, tämä avasi oven aivan uusiin ulottuvuuksiin tuotantojen rahoittamisessa. Opinnäytetyössä tutustutaan lähemmin sellaisiin rahoitusmuotoihin kuten AFP (Advertiser Funded Programming), toisella nimellä myös Branded Content, UGC (User Generated Content) ja ennakkolippujen myyntiin. Opinnäytetyössä haastatellaan alan asiantuntijoita, joita lakimuutos koskettaa: tv-kanavia, mainostajia, tuotantoyhtiöitä. Tuloksista ilmeni osapuolten tyytyväisyys lakimuutokseen, mahdollisia rajoituksia ja millaisia muutoksia se saa aikaan. AFP ja Branded Content ovat uusia mielenkiintoisia rahoitusvaihtoehtoja, joita on Suomessa käytetty mm. television viihdeohjelmissa. Lakimuutos mahdollistaa niiden käytön myös laajemmin esim. elokuvissa. Opinnäytetyö soveltuu hyvin tulevaisuudessa AV-alan opiskelijoille sekä alan ammattilaisille, jotka haluavat ymmärtää L 306/2010 lakimuutoksen vaikutuksia pähkinänkuoressa.Product placement in Finnish TV- and film productions has been a very difficult and controversial issue for a long period of time. Nevertheless, the controversial topic of product placement has been satisfying for all parties. As the era of television is about to change, the new Internet television renaissance opens up a whole new world of options for the viewer, as well as for the financial parties. At the moment, the EU Audio Visual directive regarding the Finnish law about product placement on TV and radio production is changing into a more liberal one. Act on Television and Radio Operations was verified on 1. May 2010. The aim of the thesis was to research new trends and uncommon financing options both with respect to television and film industry. In this Bachelor's Thesis, one becomes acquainted with i.e the changes in product placement; branded content or (AFP) Advertised Funded Programming; user generated content; and pre-sold tickets. I have interviewed all parties of the industry, which are directly affected by the new AV-directive: TV channels, production companies and commercial counterparts. The interview results were all mostly positive concerning the changes. However, slight concerns could also be noticed. The present Bachelor's Thesis is well suited for the students of the field as the Finnish industry professionals, who want to acquire all the facts about the law in a nutshell

    The Entrepreneurial State: An Ownership Competence Perspective

    Academics, pundits, and policymakers have recently called for a stronger governmental role in the economy to tackle social issues such as inequality and grand challenges like global warming. Despite a general recognition among economists and management scholars that government efforts to guide and control innovation or subsidize private entrepreneurs have failed to yield results, these calls also describe an entrepreneurial state in which bureaucrats, not entrepreneurs, direct not only basic research but also applied technological development. Building on the notions of economic competence and ownership competence we argue that even well-intentioned and strongly motivated public actors lack the ability to manage the process of innovation, especially under Knightian uncertainty. As stewards of resources owned by the public, government bureaucrats do not exercise the ultimate responsibility that comes with ownership. Moreover, government ownership of firms and labs and government intervention in the management of privately owned assets hampers the competitive process of putting ownership of innovative firms and projects in the hands of individuals and groups with higher levels of ownership ability. We suggest that ownership competence differs systematically between public and private actors, particularly around innovation, with important implications for innovation policy

    Biosynthesis of the sactipeptide Ruminococcin C by the human microbiome: Mechanistic insights into thioether bond formation by radical SAM enzymes

    Despite its major importance in human health, the metabolic potential of the human gut microbiota is still poorly understood. We have recently shown that biosynthesis of Ruminococcin C (RumC), a novel ribosomally synthesized and posttranslationally modified peptide (RiPP) produced by the commensal bacterium Ruminococcus gnavus, requires two radical SAM enzymes (RumMC1 and RumMC2) catalyzing the formation of four C-alpha-thioether bridges. These bridges, which are essential for RumC's antibiotic properties against human pathogens such as Clostridium perfringens, define two hairpin domains giving this sactipeptide (sulfur-to-alpha-carbon thioether-containing peptide) an unusual architecture among natural products. We report here the biochemical and spectroscopic characterizations of RumMC2. EPR spectroscopy and mutagenesis data support that RumMC2 is a member of the large family of SPASM domain radical SAM enzymes characterized by the presence of three [4Fe-4S] clusters. We also demonstrate that this enzyme initiates its reaction by C-alpha H-atom abstraction and is able to catalyze the formation of nonnatural thioether bonds in engineered peptide substrates. Unexpectedly, our data support the formation of a ketoimine rather than an alpha,beta-dehydro-amino acid intermediate during C-alpha-thioether bridge LC-MS/MS fragmentation. Finally, we explored the roles of the leader peptide and of the RiPP precursor peptide recognition element, present in myriad RiPP-modifying enzymes. Collectively, our data support a more complex role for the peptide recognition element and the core peptide for the installation of posttranslational modifications in RiPPs than previously anticipated and suggest a possible reaction intermediate for thioether bond formation

    Transoral Robotic Surgery in the Nordic Countries : Current Status and Perspectives

    Background: The five Nordic countries with a population of 27 M people form a rather homogenous region in terms of health care. The management of head and neck cancer is centralized to the 21 university hospitals in these countries. Our aim was to gain an overview of the volume and role of transoral robotic surgery (TORS) and to evaluate the need to centralize it in this area as the field is rapidly developing. Materials and Methods: A structured questionnaire was sent to all 10 Departments of Otorhinolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery in the Nordic countries having an active programme for TORS in December 2017. Results: The total cumulative number of performed robotic surgeries at these 10 Nordic centers was 528 and varied between 5 and 240 per center. The median annual number of robotic surgeries was 38 (range, 5-60). The observed number of annually operated cases remained fairly low ( Conclusions: The present results showing a limited volume of performed surgeries call for considerations to further centralize TORS in the Nordic countries.Peer reviewe

    Multi-decadal changes in tundra environments and ecosystems: Synthesis of the International Polar Year-Back to the Future Project (IPY-BTF).

    Understanding the responses of tundra systems to global change has global implications. Most tundra regions lack sustained environmental monitoring and one of the only ways to document multi-decadal change is to resample historic research sites. The International Polar Year (IPY) provided a unique opportunity for such research through the Back to the Future (BTF) project (IPY project #512). This article synthesizes the results from 13 papers within this Ambio Special Issue. Abiotic changes include glacial recession in the Altai Mountains, Russia; increased snow depth and hardness, permafrost warming, and increased growing season length in sub-arctic Sweden; drying of ponds in Greenland; increased nutrient availability in Alaskan tundra ponds, and warming at most locations studied. Biotic changes ranged from relatively minor plant community change at two sites in Greenland to moderate change in the Yukon, and to dramatic increases in shrub and tree density on Herschel Island, and in sub-arctic Sweden. The population of geese tripled at one site in northeast Greenland where biomass in non-grazed plots doubled. A model parameterized using results from a BTF study forecasts substantial declines in all snowbeds and increases in shrub tundra on Niwot Ridge, Colorado over the next century. In general, results support and provide improved capacities for validating experimental manipulation, remote sensing, and modeling studies

    Biomarkers of Nutrition for Development (BOND)—Iron Review

    This is the fifth in the series of reviews developed as part of the Biomarkers of Nutrition for Development (BOND) program. The BOND Iron Expert Panel (I-EP) reviewed the extant knowledge regarding iron biology, public health implications, and the relative usefulness of currently available biomarkers of iron status from deficiency to overload. Approaches to assessing intake, including bioavailability, are also covered. The report also covers technical and laboratory considerations for the use of available biomarkers of iron status, and concludes with a description of research priorities along with a brief discussion of new biomarkers with potential for use across the spectrum of activities related to the study of iron in human health. The I-EP concluded that current iron biomarkers are reliable for accurately assessing many aspects of iron nutrition. However, a clear distinction is made between the relative strengths of biomarkers to assess hematological consequences of iron deficiency versus other putative functional outcomes, particularly the relationship between maternal and fetal iron status during pregnancy, birth outcomes, and infant cognitive, motor and emotional development. The I-EP also highlighted the importance of considering the confounding effects of inflammation and infection on the interpretation of iron biomarker results, as well as the impact of life stage. Finally, alternative approaches to the evaluation of the risk for nutritional iron overload at the population level are presented, because the currently designated upper limits for the biomarker generally employed (serum ferritin) may not differentiate between true iron overload and the effects of subclinical inflammation

    Peri-operative red blood cell transfusion in neonates and infants: NEonate and Children audiT of Anaesthesia pRactice IN Europe: A prospective European multicentre observational study

    BACKGROUND: Little is known about current clinical practice concerning peri-operative red blood cell transfusion in neonates and small infants. Guidelines suggest transfusions based on haemoglobin thresholds ranging from 8.5 to 12 g dl-1, distinguishing between children from birth to day 7 (week 1), from day 8 to day 14 (week 2) or from day 15 (≥week 3) onwards. OBJECTIVE: To observe peri-operative red blood cell transfusion practice according to guidelines in relation to patient outcome. DESIGN: A multicentre observational study. SETTING: The NEonate-Children sTudy of Anaesthesia pRactice IN Europe (NECTARINE) trial recruited patients up to 60 weeks' postmenstrual age undergoing anaesthesia for surgical or diagnostic procedures from 165 centres in 31 European countries between March 2016 and January 2017. PATIENTS: The data included 5609 patients undergoing 6542 procedures. Inclusion criteria was a peri-operative red blood cell transfusion. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: The primary endpoint was the haemoglobin level triggering a transfusion for neonates in week 1, week 2 and week 3. Secondary endpoints were transfusion volumes, 'delta haemoglobin' (preprocedure - transfusion-triggering) and 30-day and 90-day morbidity and mortality. RESULTS: Peri-operative red blood cell transfusions were recorded during 447 procedures (6.9%). The median haemoglobin levels triggering a transfusion were 9.6 [IQR 8.7 to 10.9] g dl-1 for neonates in week 1, 9.6 [7.7 to 10.4] g dl-1 in week 2 and 8.0 [7.3 to 9.0] g dl-1 in week 3. The median transfusion volume was 17.1 [11.1 to 26.4] ml kg-1 with a median delta haemoglobin of 1.8 [0.0 to 3.6] g dl-1. Thirty-day morbidity was 47.8% with an overall mortality of 11.3%. CONCLUSIONS: Results indicate lower transfusion-triggering haemoglobin thresholds in clinical practice than suggested by current guidelines. The high morbidity and mortality of this NECTARINE sub-cohort calls for investigative action and evidence-based guidelines addressing peri-operative red blood cell transfusions strategies.
