Reviews the literature on the definitions of mixed-income communities; hypothesized and documented benefits, including poverty alleviation, desegregation and urban revitalization; and prevalence of such communities. Points to areas for future research

An assessment of twilight airglow inversion procedures using atmosphere explorer observations

    Get PDF
The aim of this research project was to test and truth some recently developed methods for recovering thermospheric oxygen atom densities and thermospheric temperatures from ground-based observations of the 7320 A O(+)((sup 2)D - (sup 2)P) twilight air glow emission. The research plan was to use twilight observations made by the Visible Airglow Experiment (VAE) on the Atmosphere Explorer 'E' satellite as proxy ground based twilight observations. These observations were to be processed using the twilight inversion procedures, and the recovered oxygen atom densities and thermospheric temperatures were then to be examined to see how they compared with the densities and temperatures that were measured by the Open Source Mass Spectrometer and the Neutral Atmosphere Temperature Experiment on the satellite

A Mixed Method Study of Spirituality and the Influence on TB Medication Adherence

    Get PDF
Nonadherence to medication for tuberculosis (TB) can lead to new cases of TB and death. Interest in spirituality in healthcare has grown among adult educators, health educators and healthcare workers (Tisdell, 2003). This mixed-method study will explore spirituality and TB medication adherence among African American and Haitian populations

Driving to Opportunity: Understanding the Links among Transportation Access, Residential Outcomes, and Economic Opportunity for Housing Voucher Recipients

    Get PDF
In the 1990s and early 2000s, the Department of Housing and Urban Development sponsored two major experiments to test whether housing choice vouchers propelled low-income households into greater economic security, the Moving to Opportunity for Fair Housing program (MTO) and the Welfare to Work Voucher program (WTW). Using data from these programs, this study examines differences in residential location and employment outcomes between voucher recipients with access to automobiles and those without. Overall, the findings underscore the positive role of automobiles in outcomes for housing voucher participants

Are Conditions on Cash Transfers Necessary to Improve Rural Education Outcomes? Evidence from Nicaragua

    Get PDF
Across Latin America, conditional cash transfer programs (CCTs), in which governments pay poor families conditional on their children attending school, have successfully increased enrollment and attendance rates. No empirical evidence supports the need for costly conditionality, however, and I compare the effect of Nicaraguan unconditional remittances to the effect of CCTs to determine which more strongly influences educational investment. I test the outcomes of school enrollment and attendance and find that unconditional transfers more strongly impact enrollment, while conditional transfers more strongly increase attendance
