Experiences in Automatic Keywording of Particle Physics Literature
Attributing keywords can assist in the classification and retrieval of documents in the particle physics literature. As information services face a future with less available manpower and more and more documents being written, the possibility of keyword attribution being assisted by automatic classification software is explored. A project being carried out at CERN (the European Laboratory for Particle Physics) for the development and integration of automatic keywording is described
Take Back Rondebosch Common: A Case Study on Discontent With the DA and Urban Land Reform in Rondebosch, Cape Town.
In late January of 2012, undercurrents of dissatisfaction with Cape Townâs ruling political party, the Democratic Alliance, and their pace of development and service delivery came to a head as aggrieved citizens marched through the southern suburbs of the city to a green known as Rondebosch Common. The citizens had planned on protesting the lack of opportunities for Cape Townâs non-white citizens while at the Common in a âLand, Housing and Jobs Summit,â but were met with police batons and armored vans that quelled the movement in an astonishing show of force. This paper will investigate the motivations of the attempted protest on Rondebosch Common, arguing that underlying discontent with the DA and their policies of unequal service delivery, particularly as it relates to land, are to be blamed for the citizenâs anger so many years after apartheidâs end. Further, it will argue that the decision to march on Rondebosch itself makes this particular demonstration different from the many that have occurred in South Africa.
By interviewing members of the various organizations involved in planning the march and community members, reading local newspapers that covered the event, and academically researching the question of urban land reform in South Africa in the years since apartheid, a more holistic view of the movement sometimes called âOccupy Rondebosch Commonâ emerges, including just why a protest was deemed necessary in the first place and why the decision was made to march on Rondebosch.
Through compiling these separate sources of information into one narrative of the protest, the motivations for the march become more readily apparent, suggesting that the planned summit was in response to the slow pace of the Democratic Allianceâs service delivery in marginalized sections of Cape Town. What sets this particular demonstration apart was its strategy of crossing the invisible line dividing the city between whites and non-whites by holding a protest of Cape Townâs disaffected in the leafy southern suburbs. With this decision, and because of the large show of force by the municipal police, âOccupy Rondebosch Commonâ was thrust into the spotlight and into the consciousness of a city that has ignored certain problems of its population for far too long. By turning the demonstration into a news story, the protesting citizens at Rondebosch accidentally but effectively revitalized the debate in Cape Town over land, housing and jobs
Education of Obstetrical Nursing Staff Regarding Regional Anesthesia and Possible Complications
Spinal and epidural anesthesia have long been a popular choice for anesthesia in the obstetrical population, whether for a laboring patient or a patient undergoing a cesarean delivery. Anesthesia providers caITy out the placement and delivery of these blocks. After the block is deemed successful and the patient is considered medically stable, the anesthesia provider may then leave the side of their patient, trusting that the care given by the labor and delivery nurse will be the best possible care available. However, it is a well know fact that risks are present anytime an invasive procedure takes place. Complications can arise with the placement of spinal or epidural anesthetics, and they may occur during, immediately after, hours after or even days after placement of a spinal or epidural anesthetic. If the obstetrical patient does experience complications, the obstetrical nurse must have an adequate knowledge base regarding regional anesthesia in order to provide the most competent care available
The method used for this independent project was a review of literature utilizing PubMed, CINAHL and SCOPUS databases. Current thoughts on educating labor and delivery nurses on regional anesthesia and possible complications were organized according to a physiological framework. The plan for this independent project was implemented by educating labor and delivery nurses regarding regional anesthesia and possible complications using a Power Point presentation. Main topics of discussion included basics of spinals and epidurals and how they differ, complications that may arise from spinals and epidurals, and appropriate interventions that may either prevent or treat these complications. It was anticipated the nurses would have a better understanding of spinal and epidural anesthesia and possible complications after the Power Point presentation. Results from an evaluation proved the presentation was successful in increasing the labor and delivery nurses overall comprehension of spinal and epidural anesthesia in the obstetrical populatio
Reading Strategies for Content Teachers
This project, designed for content teachers wishing to improve their students\u27 reading skills, includes lesson plans, procedures, and materials for learning modules in the following content field reading problem areas: readability, vocabulary, diagnosis, questioning, using the textbook, organizing for instruction, and notetaking and listening. The key recommendation was that the project be seen as an evolving process and not as an end product

Fludrocortisone: Role in Central Regulation of Fluid Balance
We have performed 7 experiments in rats on the effects of systemic treatment with fludrocortisone (9a-FF) given in a variety of doses over a variety of times, in the AM and in the PM. These experiments were designed to determine the best treatment protocol to use in the head-down rat model studies which were performed at NASA-Ames Research Center during the final year. The results of the experiments in non-stressed rats have been, on the whole, disappointing in that we have so far been unable to obtain direct evidence that the 9a-FF acts as a mineralocorticoid. In the ultimate experiments using control and suspended rats, we showed mineralocorticoid and glucocorticoid effects of 9aFF. However, suspension served in our rats as a chronic stressor when they were examined 5 d after the onset of treatment
Diagnosis in the Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome
Neuroleptic malignant syndrome (NMS) is an uncommon, potentially lethal complication of treatment with antipsychotic medication. First described in American journals by Delay and Deniker in 1968 (1), this syndrome has been reported for many years in the European and Japanese literature
