-Classical orthogonal polynomials: A general difference calculus approach
It is well known that the classical families of orthogonal polynomials are
characterized as eigenfunctions of a second order linear
differential/difference operator. In this paper we present a study of classical
orthogonal polynomials in a more general context by using the differential (or
difference) calculus and Operator Theory. In such a way we obtain a unified
representation of them. Furthermore, some well known results related to the
Rodrigues operator are deduced. A more general characterization Theorem that
the one given in [1] and [2] for the q-polynomials of the q-Askey and Hahn
Tableaux, respectively, is established. Finally, the families of Askey-Wilson
polynomials, q-Racah polynomials, Al-Salam & Carlitz I and II, and q-Meixner
are considered.

Nonlinear atom optics and bright gap soliton generation in finite optical lattices
We theoretically investigate the transmission dynamics of coherent matter
wave pulses across finite optical lattices in both the linear and the nonlinear
regimes. The shape and the intensity of the transmitted pulse are found to
strongly depend on the parameters of the incident pulse, in particular its
velocity and density: a clear physical picture for the main features observed
in the numerical simulations is given in terms of the atomic band dispersion in
the periodic potential of the optical lattice. Signatures of nonlinear effects
due the atom-atom interaction are discussed in detail, such as atom optical
limiting and atom optical bistability. For positive scattering lengths, matter
waves propagating close to the top of the valence band are shown to be subject
to modulational instability. A new scheme for the experimental generation of
narrow bright gap solitons from a wide Bose-Einstein condensate is proposed:
the modulational instability is seeded in a controlled way starting from the
strongly modulated density profile of a standing matter wave and the solitonic
nature of the generated pulses is checked from their shape and their
collisional properties
Ultrathin GeSn p-channel MOSFETs grown directly on Si(111) substrate using solid phase epitaxy
Ultrathin GeSn layers with a thickness of 5.5 nm are fabricated on a Si(111) substrate by solid phase epitaxy (SPE) of amorphous GeSn layers with Sn concentrations up to 6.7%. We demonstrate well-behaved depletion-mode operation of GeSn p-channel metal–oxide–semiconductor field-effect transistors (pMOSFETs) with an on/off ratio of more than 1000 owing to the ultrathin GeSn channel layer (5.5 nm). It is found that the on current increases significantly with increasing Sn concentration at the same gate overdrive, attributed to an increasing substitutional Sn incorporation in Ge. The GeSn (6.7%) layer sample shows approximately 90% enhancement in hole mobility in comparison with a pure Ge channel on Si.status: publishe
Energy Conditions in Modified Gravity with Non-minimal Coupling to Matter
In this paper we study a model of modified gravity with non-minimal coupling
between a general function of the Gauss-Bonnet invariant, , and matter
Lagrangian from the point of view of the energy conditions. Such model has been
introduced in Ref. [21] for description of early inflation and late-time cosmic
acceleration. We present the suitable energy conditions for the above mentioned
model and then, we use the estimated values of the Hubble, deceleration and
jerk parameters to apply the obtained energy conditions to the specific class
of modified Gauss-Bonnet models.Comment: 12 pages, no figur, Accepted for publication in Astrophysics and

Modified f(G) gravity models with curvature-matter coupling
A modified f(G) gravity model with coupling between matter and geometry is
proposed, which is described by the product of the Lagrange density of the
matter and an arbitrary function of the Gauss-Bonnet term. The field equations
and the equations of motion corresponding to this model show the
non-conservation of the energy-momentum tensor, the presence of an extra-force
acting on test particles and the non-geodesic motion. Moreover, the energy
conditions and the stability criterion at de Sitter point in the modified f(G)
gravity models with curvature-matter coupling are derived, which can degenerate
to the well-known energy conditions in general relativity. Furthermore, in
order to get some insight on the meaning of these energy conditions, we apply
them to the specific models of f(G) gravity and the corresponding constraints
on the models are given. In addition, the conditions and the candidate for
late-time cosmic accelerated expansion in the modified f(G) gravity are studied
by means of conditions of power-law expansion and the equation of state of
matter less than -1/ 3 .Comment: 13 pages, 4 figure
Vibrational Analysis Of Amorphous Carbon-nitrogen Alloys By 15n And D Isotopic Substitution
The origin of the vibrational modes of a-CNx alloys is investigated by infrared (ir) and Raman spectroscopies. Isotopic substitution of 15N and D is used in the identification of vibration modes. In nonhydrogenated materials containing low nitrogen concentration (≤20 at. %), the ir and Raman spectra are not equivalent. Above this concentration (up to ∼30 at. %), the spectra became very similar to each other. On the contrary, for a suitable hydrogen content the spectra are quite similar, independently of the range of nitrogen concentrations studied. Quantum chemical Parametric Method 3 calculations are performed to obtain the frequencies and intensities of the ir active vibrations of organic molecules and large carbon-nitrogen clusters. These results are used to help in the identification of the features observed in the ir spectra. The importance of both the promotion of bond dipoles and symmetry breaking by nitrogen in the ir spectra is established. ©2000 The American Physical Society.61210831087Fang, P.H., (1995) J. Mater. Search for direct production of charginos and neutralinos in events with three leptons and missing transverse momentum in √s = 7 TeV pp collisions with the ATLAS detector
A search for the direct production of charginos and neutralinos in final states with three electrons or muons and missing transverse momentum is presented. The analysis is based on 4.7 fb−1 of proton–proton collision data delivered by the Large Hadron Collider and recorded with the ATLAS detector. Observations are consistent with Standard Model expectations in three signal regions that are either depleted or enriched in Z-boson decays. Upper limits at 95% confidence level are set in R-parity conserving phenomenological minimal supersymmetric models and in simplified models, significantly extending previous results
A survey of national and multi-national registries and cohort studies in juvenile idiopathic arthritis: Challenges and opportunities
Background: To characterize the existing national and multi-national registries and cohort studies in juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) and identify differences as well as areas of potential future collaboration. Methods: We surveyed investigators from North America, Europe, and Australia about existing JIA cohort studies and registries. We excluded cross-sectional studies. We captured information about study design, duration, location, inclusion criteria, data elements and collection methods. Results: We received survey results from 18 studies, including 11 national and 7 multi-national studies representing 37 countries in total. Study designs included inception cohorts, prevalent disease cohorts, and new treatment cohorts (several of which contribute to pharmacosurveillance activities). Despite numerous differences, the data elements collected across the studies was quite similar, with most studies collecting at least 5 of the 6 American College of Rheumatology core set variables and the data needed to calculate the 3-variable clinical juvenile disease activity score. Most studies were collecting medication initiation and discontinuation dates and were attempting to capture serious adverse events. Conclusion: There is a wide-range of large, ongoing JIA registries and cohort studies around the world. Our survey results indicate significant potential for future collaborative work using data from different studies and both combined and comparative analyses
Forest Biodiversity Assessment in Peruvian Andean Montane Cloud Forest
Cloud forests are unusual and fragile habitats, being one of the least studied and least understood ecosystems. The tropical Andean dominion is considered one of the most significant places in the world as rega rds biological diversity, with a very high level of endemism. The biodiversity was analysed in an isolated remnant area of a tropical montane cloud forest known as the ?Bosque de Neblina de Cuyas?, in the North of the Peruvian Andean range. Composition, structure and dead wood were measured or estimated. The values obtained were compared with other cloud forests. The study revealed a high level of forest biodiversity, although the level of biodiversity differs from one area to another: in the inner areas, where human pressure is almost inexistent, the biodiversity values increase. The high species richness and the low dominance among species bear testimony to this montane cloud forest as a real enclave of biodiversity
