A Customer Service Model For Higher Education

    Get PDF
Institutions of higher education (IHEs) can optimize their student experience by developing a customer service mindset. Well-developed, inclusive customer service models can support students’ educational and co-curricular experiences. Adapting corporate customer service models to higher education that are informed by the framework and principles of “servant leadership” can lead to a more positive and enriching experience for staff and students. The purpose of this dissertation is twofold: (a) identify aspects of certain corporate models of customer service that lend themselves well to the mission of IHEs; and (b) conduct exploratory research at a specific, student-focused office of an IHE to understand better its customer service mindset and how a customized corporate model can further support the office’s work

The Effects of Professional Development Workshops and Mentoring on Teachers Use of Multicultural Strategies in One Urban Middle School

    Get PDF
This ten-month action research study involved 13 teachers in one middle school in a high-needs New England school district. It examined the effects of professional development workshops on teachers’ use of multicultural strategies to promote culturally and linguistically diverse students’ participation in content area classes. The study was grounded in principles of multicultural education, culturally relevant pedagogy, and restorative practices. Workshops were designed based on needs identified by two measures: a school-wide survey and informal observations in classrooms. The principal investigator designed and presented the workshops and provided follow-up coaching (observations and interviews) to support to teachers as they implemented strategies they learned in the workshops. In addition to the workshops, surveys, and classroom observations, other data sources included interviews and analysis of artifacts--such as, curricula, changes in classroom instructional supports, and informal observations of increased student engagement, and class participation. Data was analyzed using descriptive statistics and ethnographic research methods. Findings indicated that locally designed workshops with district-based coaching afterward incrementally increased teachers use of the strategies introduced. District-wide multicultural education initiatives, however, may not be effective without a district-wide plan to monitor teachers’ implementation of strategies and assess changes in student engagement and ideally student academic growth

Improving the Quality of Cancer Care at Community Hospitals

    Get PDF
Objectives: Rural cancer patients in the United States face significant barriers to accessing high-quality care, contributing to cancer mortality rates that are approximately 15% higher than those in urban populations. These disparities are rooted in structural challenges, including provider shortages, financial constraints, limited access to specialized care, and a lack of technology. Similarly, hospitals within these communities also frequently face barriers like limitations in resources and infrastructure that hinder their ability to provide comprehensive oncology services. This highlights the necessity for scalable interventions to address these gaps effectively. The proposed implementation and evaluation plan targets this gap and creates a comprehensive, evidence-based program to improve the quality of cancer care at a community hospital in rural Texas.Methods/Design: Drawing from best practices identified in national studies and successful interventions designed by established rural oncology networks, this program promotes collaboration between Childress Regional Medical Center and UT Southwestern Moncrief Cancer Institute to expand access to oncology expertise and improve the quality of care delivered to the rural cancer community in Childress, Texas. The intervention includes three core strategies: provider cultural competency training, development of institutional partnerships, and implementation of telehealth services.Evaluation: Grounded in the Institute of Medicine’s healthcare quality framework, the program seeks to provide safe, effective, patient-centered, timely, efficient, and equitable healthcare. This can be accomplished through measuring adherence to oncology clinical guidelines, readmission rates, patient satisfaction, call volume, virtual visit utilization, and provider engagement. Ongoing monitoring of these metrics will inform iterative improvements and overall program success. Conclusions: By addressing both provider- and system-level barriers, this model demonstrates a sustainable approach to reducing rural cancer disparities and improving both quality of care and patient access. The program serves as a replicable framework for other underserved regions
