    Infected epidermal cyst of the clitoris in an infant

    Clitoral enlargement in the pediatric population is a rare condition, usually related to problems of sexual differentiation, but malignant and benign clitoral lesions have also been described. We report the case of a newborn infant, investigated at birth for an intersex disorder because of clitoromegaly. Hormonal screening was normal and ultrasound (US) did not show a pelvic or abdominal mass. Three weeks later, the lesion was larger, tense and erythematous. An abscess was suspected. A drainage was then performed, and the bacteriological culture revealed the presence of Staphylococci aurei. A magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) performed to exclude a tumor of the soft tissue was normal. A diagnosis of infected epidermal cyst was confirmed by the pathology. Two months later, the external genital aspect was normal and the child asymptomatic

    Difficult management of an extremely rare case of giant pigmented epithelioid melanocytoma

    Pigmented epithelioid melanocytoma (PEM), a heavily pigmented and highly uncommon melanocytic lesion, is extremely rare. It comes under several forms and names. We report the case of a three-year-old boy born with an isolated right lumbopelvic and femoral giant PEM. The boy was unable to walk due to the size and the shape of the lesion. He underwent two stages of intra lesional resections, one in Benin and the second in Switzerland. The first surgery was followed by hypothetic hypovolemic and anaphylactic shocks, and the second surgery by a continuous lymphatic leakage from the wounds for months. The strategic management approach, the surgery and follow-up of this case of giant PEM presented a real challenge. (C) 2017 The Authors. Published by Elsevier Inc.     Influence of infancy care strategy on hearing in children and adolescents: A longitudinal study of children with unilateral lip and /or cleft palate.

    To evaluate the relation between ventilation tube insertion, otitis media with effusion duration and otologic outcomes in unilateral cleft lip and/or cleft palate children from infancy to teenage age. Retrospective longitudinal charts review of patients from the multidisciplinary cleft team of the University Hospital of Lausanne over a 30-year period. 146 charts from consecutive patients with non-syndromic unilateral cleft lip and/or cleft palate who were born between January 1986 and January 2003 were included. The earlier in life a cleft child experience his first otitis media with effusion (OME), the worse his long-term hearing will be. Along with the age of onset of OME, we disclosed an influence of the duration of OME without ventilation tube (VT) insertion on short and long-term hearing outcomes. Different patterns were observed between cleft palate (CP) and cleft lip palate children (CLP), with a higher incidence of otitis media with effusion for the CLP group than the CP group. Direct positive relationship between VT insertion and hearing were disclosed and evaluation of long-term complications did not reveal significant relation with VT insertion. Of note, OME in CLP children led to a higher rate (but not statistically significant) of chronic ear complications than in the CP group, that may indicate more persistent OME or different adverse effect on the middle ear mucosa between CP and CLP children. Individualized counseling should take into account different factors such as the type of cleft, the age of onset of OME and duration of OME, keeping in mind the adverse effect of persistent middle ear fluid.     Search for pair production of vector-like top quarks in events with one lepton, jets, and missing transverse momentum in √s=13 TeV pp collisions with the ATLAS detector

    The results of a search for vector-like top quarks using events with exactly one lepton, at least four jets, and large missing transverse momentum are reported. The search is optimised for pair production of vector-like top quarks in the Z(→νν) t + X decay channel. LHC pp collision data at a centre-of-mass energy of √s=13 TeV recorded by the ATLAS detector in 2015 and 2016 are used, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 36.1 fb−1. No significant excess over the Standard Model expectation is seen and upper limits on the production cross-section of a vector-like T quark pair as a function of the T quark mass are derived. The observed (expected) 95% CL lower limits on the T mass are 870 GeV (890 GeV) for the weak-isospin singlet model, 1.05 TeV (1.06 TeV) for the weak-isospin doublet model and 1.16 TeV (1.17 TeV) for the pure Zt decay mode. Limits are also set on the mass as a function of the decay branching ratios, excluding large parts of the parameter space for masses below 1 TeV

    Search for long-lived charginos based on a disappearing-track signature in pp collisions at s √ =13 s=13 TeV with the ATLAS detector

    This paper presents a search for direct electroweak gaugino or gluino pair production with a chargino nearly mass-degenerate with a stable neutralino. It is based on an integrated luminosity of 36.1 fb−1 of pp collisions at s √ =13 s=13 TeV collected by the ATLAS experiment at the LHC. The final state of interest is a disappearing track accompanied by at least one jet with high transverse momentum from initial-state radiation or by four jets from the gluino decay chain. The use of short track segments reconstructed from the innermost tracking layers significantly improves the sensitivity to short chargino lifetimes. The results are found to be consistent with Standard Model predictions. Exclusion limits are set at 95% confidence level on the mass of charginos and gluinos for different chargino lifetimes. For a pure wino with a lifetime of about 0.2 ns, chargino masses up to 460 GeV are excluded. For the strong production channel, gluino masses up to 1.65 TeV are excluded assuming a chargino mass of 460 GeV and lifetime of 0.2 ns

    Search for additional heavy neutral Higgs and gauge bosons in the ditau final state produced in 36 fb−1 of pp collisions at √s=13 TeV with the ATLAS detector

    A search for heavy neutral Higgs bosons and Z′ bosons is performed using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 36.1 fb−1 from proton-proton collisions at √s=13 TeV recorded by the ATLAS detector at the LHC during 2015 and 2016. The heavy resonance is assumed to decay to τ+τ− with at least one tau lepton decaying to final states with hadrons and a neutrino. The search is performed in the mass range of 0.2-2.25 TeV for Higgs bosons and 0.2-4.0 TeV for Z′ bosons. The data are in good agreement with the background predicted by the Standard Model. The results are interpreted in benchmark scenarios. In the context of the hMSSM scenario, the data exclude tan β > 1.0 for mA= 0.25 TeV and tan β > 42 for mA=1.5 TeV at the 95% confidence level. For the Sequential Standard Model, ZSSM′ with mZ′< 2.42 TeV is excluded at 95% confidence level, while Z NU′ with mZ ′ < 2.25 TeV is excluded for the non-universal G(221) model that exhibits enhanced couplings to third-generation fermions

    Searches for the Zγ decay mode of the Higgs boson and for new high-mass resonances in pp collisions at √s=13 TeV with the ATLAS detector

    This article presents searches for the Zγ decay of the Higgs boson and for narrow high-mass resonances decaying to Zγ, exploiting Z boson decays to pairs of electrons or muons. The data analysis uses 36.1 fb−1 of pp collisions at √s=13 recorded by the ATLAS detector at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. The data are found to be consistent with the expected Standard Model background. The observed (expected — assuming Standard Model pp → H → Zγ production and decay) upper limit on the production cross section times the branching ratio for pp → H → Zγ is 6.6. (5.2) times the Standard Model prediction at the 95% confidence level for a Higgs boson mass of 125.09 GeV. In addition, upper limits are set on the production cross section times the branching ratio as a function of the mass of a narrow resonance between 250 GeV and 2.4 TeV, assuming spin-0 resonances produced via gluon-gluon fusion, and spin-2 resonances produced via gluon-gluon or quark-antiquark initial states. For high-mass spin-0 resonances, the observed (expected) limits vary between 88 fb (61 fb) and 2.8 fb (2.7 fb) for the mass range from 250 GeV to 2.4 TeV at the 95% confidence level

    Search for B −L R-parity-violating top squarks in √s=13 TeV pp collisions with the ATLAS experiment

    A search is presented for the direct pair production of the stop, the supersymmetric partner of the top quark, that decays through an R-parity-violating coupling to a final state with two leptons and two jets, at least one of which is identified as a b-jet. The data set corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 36.1 fb−1 of proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of √s=13 TeV, collected in 2015 and 2016 by the ATLAS detector at the LHC. No significant excess is observed over the Standard Model background, and exclusion limits are set on stop pair production at a 95% confidence level. Lower limits on the stop mass are set between 600 GeV and 1.5 TeV for branching ratios above 10% for decays to an electron or muon and a b-quark

    Search for doubly charged Higgs boson production in multi-lepton final states with the ATLAS detector using proton-proton collisions at √s = 13TeV

    A search for doubly charged Higgs bosons with pairs of prompt, isolated, highly energetic leptons with the same electric charge is presented. The search uses a proton–proton collision data sample at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV corresponding to 36.1 fb −1 of integrated luminosity recorded in 2015 and 2016 by the ATLAS detector at the LHC. This analysis focuses on the decays H±±→e±e±, H±±→e±μ± and H±±→μ±μ±, fitting the dilepton mass spectra in several exclusive signal regions. No significant evidence of a signal is observed and corresponding limits on the production cross-section and consequently a lower limit on m(H±±) are derived at 95% confidence level. With ℓ±ℓ±=e±e±/μ±μ±/e±μ±, the observed lower limit on the mass of a doubly charged Higgs boson only coupling to left-handed leptons varies from 770 to 870 GeV (850 GeV expected) for B(H±±→ℓ±ℓ±)=100% and both the expected and observed mass limits are above 450 GeV for B(H±±→ℓ±ℓ±)=10% and any combination of partial branching ratios
