    Evaluation of a porous hydroxyapatite alloplast in the management of grade II furcation defects in molars: a case series

    Introduction: The present case series evaluates the efficacy of a hydroxyapatite graft material in the management of grade II furcation involvement in first molars. Materials and methods: Eight patients presenting with a total of 9 grade II furcation defects in relation to the facial aspect of either maxillary or mandibular first molars were treated with a porous hydroxyapatite alloplast. The clinical outcomes were measured in terms of change in probing pocket depth and clinical attachment level (vertical and horizontal) at 6 months post-operatively. Radiographs were used as supplements. Results: At 6 months, there was a mean pocket depth reduction of 3.12±1.25 mm, a mean vertical attachment gain of 2.75±1.17 mm, and a mean horizontal attachment gain of 3.25±1.28 mm. Radiographs showed bone fill at all treated sites. The outcomes were better in mandibular teeth compared to maxillary teeth. The use of hydroxyapatite graft is effective in reducing pocket depth and bringing out gain in attachment levels when used in grade II furcation defects

    Shell Banding Pattern and Chromosomal Studies on the Giant African Snail, Achatina Fulica (Bowdich) (Achatinidae: Gastropoda)

    A pioneer report on the shell banding, chirality (shell coiling) and chromosomal studies on populations of the giant African snail, Achatina fulica (Bowdich) (Achatinidae: Gastropoda) occurring in Bengaluru region is detailed in this paper. Shell coiling in A. fulica was found to be dextral and significant variation in banding pattern within and between populations was observed. The chromosome number from well spread diakinesis and metaphase stages of meiosis in ovotestis is found to be n=30 and 2n=60, which is similar to earlier works, also the similarity in different stages is in agreement with the earlier reports

    To find out the frequency of extraction in general, in Class I, Class II Class III patients, and to compare the frequency of extraction among sex and age. 550 cases were selected retrospectively having detailed case history, complete records of facial photographs, lateral cephalogram, orthopantomographs and study models. Frequency of extraction was evaluated separately for class I, class II and class III malocclusion and for sex and ages, using the records collected. Show that there was 59.80% of extraction in general. Comparison of sex shows that there were 66.60 of extraction in females. The mean age of males for extraction was 17.85 +/- 4.18 and the mean age of females was 18.36 +/_ 4.89. Among all the groups, Class I malocclusion shows 89% of extraction. There was higher frequency of extraction comprising in general. Comparison of sex shows that there was higher frequency of extraction in females. Comparison of age shows that extraction frequency is more in late adolescent period. Among all the groups, Class I malocclusion shows higher frequency of extraction

    Characterization of Alcaligenes faecalis GPA-1 producing thermostable extracellular α-amylase

    The bacterium coded GPA-1(isolated by Dr V Thankamani in 1990) was characterized by standard methods including microscopy, special stains, biochemical tests and growth on various types of media for systematic identification up to genus level. With 16S rRNA gene sequencing, the isolate was identified as Alcaligenes faecalis and deposited in NCBI with GenBank Accession number HQ 848384. The isolate was screened for the production of enzymes like amylase, protease and carboxy methyl  cellulase (CMC). This isolate showed a clear zone of lysis on starch agar, yellow zone on CMC agar when stained with Congo red and a clear zone of casein hydrolysis in skim milk agar indicating amylase, cellulose and proteolytic activity respectively. Preliminary characterization of extra  cellular amylase was done. The strain was found to be alkalophilic as it grew well in pH 9.0 and 10.0. The optimum temperature and salinity were found to be 37oC and 3% respectively. Growth curve experiments of the organism in nutrient broth containing 1% starch at varying physical and nutritional parameters were done up to 72 hrs, and the samples were also  tested for pH changes, biomass, total protein, reducing sugars and  α-amylase activity. Soluble starch (1%) in standard nutrient broth and pH 8.0, 37oC, shaking at100 rpm and 40-44 hours incubation were found to be the optimum conditions for maximal enzyme production

    Search for a W' boson decaying to a bottom quark and a top quark in pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV

    Results are presented from a search for a W' boson using a dataset corresponding to 5.0 inverse femtobarns of integrated luminosity collected during 2011 by the CMS experiment at the LHC in pp collisions at sqrt(s)=7 TeV. The W' boson is modeled as a heavy W boson, but different scenarios for the couplings to fermions are considered, involving both left-handed and right-handed chiral projections of the fermions, as well as an arbitrary mixture of the two. The search is performed in the decay channel W' to t b, leading to a final state signature with a single lepton (e, mu), missing transverse energy, and jets, at least one of which is tagged as a b-jet. A W' boson that couples to fermions with the same coupling constant as the W, but to the right-handed rather than left-handed chiral projections, is excluded for masses below 1.85 TeV at the 95% confidence level. For the first time using LHC data, constraints on the W' gauge coupling for a set of left- and right-handed coupling combinations have been placed.     Search for new physics in events with opposite-sign leptons, jets, and missing transverse energy in pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV

    A search is presented for physics beyond the standard model (BSM) in final states with a pair of opposite-sign isolated leptons accompanied by jets and missing transverse energy. The search uses LHC data recorded at a center-of-mass energy sqrt(s) = 7 TeV with the CMS detector, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of approximately 5 inverse femtobarns. Two complementary search strategies are employed. The first probes models with a specific dilepton production mechanism that leads to a characteristic kinematic edge in the dilepton mass distribution. The second strategy probes models of dilepton production with heavy, colored objects that decay to final states including invisible particles, leading to very large hadronic activity and missing transverse energy. No evidence for an event yield in excess of the standard model expectations is found. Upper limits on the BSM contributions to the signal regions are deduced from the results, which are used to exclude a region of the parameter space of the constrained minimal supersymmetric extension of the standard model. Additional information related to detector efficiencies and response is provided to allow testing specific models of BSM physics not considered in this paper.Comment: Replaced with published version.
