    Application of Microsystems Technology in the Fabrication of Thermoelectric Micro-Converters

    The use of thin-film deposition techniques with microsystems technologies renewed the interest in the thermoelectricity in the last years. Integration of efficient solid-state thermoelectric (TE) microdevices with microelectronics is desirable for local cooling and, since they can be used to stabilise the temperature of devices, decrease noise levels and increase operation speed. Their use in thermoelectric microgeneration (energy harvesting) can also supply energy to low power consumption electronic devices. In this chapter, the fabrication of thermoelectric microconverters is compared, both on materials from thin-film composites to supperlattice structures, and on its fabrication techniques

    Response Of Hybridized (mixed Valence) Systems To External Probes

    The problem of the response of a hybridized system to an external probe is discussed from a completely quantum-mechanical point of view. An exactly soluble model, which describes qualitatively the mixed-valence states of rare-earth compound solids, is presented. We show that it is possible to obtain regimes of "single response"-e.g., isomer shifts-as well as regimes of "two responses"-e.g., photoelectron emission spectra. The calculation does not involve real time fluctuations. We point out that it would be worthwhile to investigate experimentally intermediate regimes where the characteristic energy of the probe is comparable to the energy separation of the hybridized states. © The American Physical Society.1393948395

    Spin Waves In Dilute Ferromagnets: Cluster-bethe-lattice Approach

    A calculation of the local density of spin-wave states in a dilute ferromagnet is presented. It is based on a Green's-function formulation solved within the cluster-Bethe-lattice approximation. The method is compared with an exact solution for the one-dimensional dilute ferromagnet. We also study clusters of nine atoms in the bcc structure, and clusters of 7, 19, and 27 atoms in the simple-cubic structure. Our study shows: (i) a stability condition for ferromagnetism in agreement with percolation theory; (ii) a local structure dependence of the spin-wave structure; (iii) the existence of localized spin-wave states due to both isolated magnetic clusters and nonpropagating magnon modes. © 1976 The American Physical Society.1431314132

    Influence of Hybridization on the Properties of the Spinless Falicov-Kimball Model

    Without a hybridization between the localized f- and the conduction (c-) electron states the spinless Falicov-Kimball model (FKM) is exactly solvable in the limit of high spatial dimension, as first shown by Brandt and Mielsch. Here I show that at least for sufficiently small c-f-interaction this exact inhomogeneous ground state is also obtained in Hartree-Fock approximation. With hybridization the model is no longer exactly solvable, but the approximation yields that the inhomogeneous charge-density wave (CDW) ground state remains stable also for finite hybridization V smaller than a critical hybridization V_c, above which no inhomogeneous CDW solution but only a homogeneous solution is obtained. The spinless FKM does not allow for a ''ferroelectric'' ground state with a spontaneous polarization, i.e. there is no nonvanishing -expectation value in the limit of vanishing hybridization.Comment: 7 pages, 6 figure

    Heavy Quark Photoproduction in Ultra-peripheral Heavy Ion Collisions

    Heavy quarks are copiously produced in ultra-peripheral heavy ion collisions. In the strong electromagnetic fields, c c-bar and b b-bar are produced by photonuclear and two-photon interactions; hadroproduction can occur in grazing interactions. We present the total cross sections, quark transverse momentum and rapidity distributions, as well as the Q Q-bar invariant mass spectra from the three production channels. We consider AA and pA collisions at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider and Large Hadron Collider.     Update on the correlation of the highest energy cosmic rays with nearby extragalactic matter

    Data collected by the Pierre Auger Observatory through 31 August 2007 showed evidence for anisotropy in the arrival directions of cosmic rays above the Greisen-Zatsepin-Kuz'min energy threshold, \nobreak{6×10196\times 10^{19}eV}. The anisotropy was measured by the fraction of arrival directions that are less than 3.13.1^\circ from the position of an active galactic nucleus within 75 Mpc (using the V\'eron-Cetty and V\'eron 12th12^{\rm th} catalog). An updated measurement of this fraction is reported here using the arrival directions of cosmic rays recorded above the same energy threshold through 31 December 2009. The number of arrival directions has increased from 27 to 69, allowing a more precise measurement. The correlating fraction is (386+7)(38^{+7}_{-6})%, compared with 2121% expected for isotropic cosmic rays. This is down from the early estimate of (6913+11)(69^{+11}_{-13})%. The enlarged set of arrival directions is examined also in relation to other populations of nearby extragalactic objects: galaxies in the 2 Microns All Sky Survey and active galactic nuclei detected in hard X-rays by the Swift Burst Alert Telescope. A celestial region around the position of the radiogalaxy Cen A has the largest excess of arrival directions relative to isotropic expectations.     Advanced functionality for radio analysis in the Offline software framework of the Pierre Auger Observatory

    The advent of the Auger Engineering Radio Array (AERA) necessitates the development of a powerful framework for the analysis of radio measurements of cosmic ray air showers. As AERA performs "radio-hybrid" measurements of air shower radio emission in coincidence with the surface particle detectors and fluorescence telescopes of the Pierre Auger Observatory, the radio analysis functionality had to be incorporated in the existing hybrid analysis solutions for fluoresence and surface detector data. This goal has been achieved in a natural way by extending the existing Auger Offline software framework with radio functionality. In this article, we lay out the design, highlights and features of the radio extension implemented in the Auger Offline framework. Its functionality has achieved a high degree of sophistication and offers advanced features such as vectorial reconstruction of the electric field, advanced signal processing algorithms, a transparent and efficient handling of FFTs, a very detailed simulation of detector effects, and the read-in of multiple data formats including data from various radio simulation codes.     Search for First Harmonic Modulation in the Right Ascension Distribution of Cosmic Rays Detected at the Pierre Auger Observatory

    We present the results of searches for dipolar-type anisotropies in different energy ranges above 2.5×10172.5\times 10^{17} eV with the surface detector array of the Pierre Auger Observatory, reporting on both the phase and the amplitude measurements of the first harmonic modulation in the right-ascension distribution. Upper limits on the amplitudes are obtained, which provide the most stringent bounds at present, being below 2% at 99% C.L.C.L. for EeV energies.     Search for direct production of charginos and neutralinos in events with three leptons and missing transverse momentum in √s = 7 TeV pp collisions with the ATLAS detector

    A search for the direct production of charginos and neutralinos in final states with three electrons or muons and missing transverse momentum is presented. The analysis is based on 4.7 fb−1 of proton–proton collision data delivered by the Large Hadron Collider and recorded with the ATLAS detector. Observations are consistent with Standard Model expectations in three signal regions that are either depleted or enriched in Z-boson decays. Upper limits at 95% confidence level are set in R-parity conserving phenomenological minimal supersymmetric models and in simplified models, significantly extending previous results

    Jet size dependence of single jet suppression in lead-lead collisions at sqrt(s(NN)) = 2.76 TeV with the ATLAS detector at the LHC

    Measurements of inclusive jet suppression in heavy ion collisions at the LHC provide direct sensitivity to the physics of jet quenching. In a sample of lead-lead collisions at sqrt(s) = 2.76 TeV corresponding to an integrated luminosity of approximately 7 inverse microbarns, ATLAS has measured jets with a calorimeter over the pseudorapidity interval |eta| < 2.1 and over the transverse momentum range 38 < pT < 210 GeV. Jets were reconstructed using the anti-kt algorithm with values for the distance parameter that determines the nominal jet radius of R = 0.2, 0.3, 0.4 and 0.5. The centrality dependence of the jet yield is characterized by the jet "central-to-peripheral ratio," Rcp. Jet production is found to be suppressed by approximately a factor of two in the 10% most central collisions relative to peripheral collisions. Rcp varies smoothly with centrality as characterized by the number of participating nucleons. The observed suppression is only weakly dependent on jet radius and transverse momentum. These results provide the first direct measurement of inclusive jet suppression in heavy ion collisions and complement previous measurements of dijet transverse energy imbalance at the LHC.Comment: 15 pages plus author list (30 pages total), 8 figures, 2 tables, submitted to Physics Letters B.
