The Psychological Science Accelerator: Advancing Psychology Through a Distributed Collaborative Network

Many findings in psychological science are based on studies with insufficient statistical power and nonrepresentative samples, or may otherwise be limited to specific, ungeneralizable settings or populations. Crowdsourced research, a type of large-scale collaboration in which one or more research projects are conducted across multiple lab sites, offers a pragmatic solution to these and other current methodological challenges. The Psychological Science Accelerator (PSA) is a distributed network of laboratories designed to enable and support crowdsourced research projects. These projects can focus on novel research questions or replicate prior research in large, diverse samples. The PSA’s mission is to accelerate the accumulation of reliable and generalizable evidence in psychological science. Here, we describe the background, structure, principles, procedures, benefits, and challenges of the PSA. In contrast to other crowdsourced research networks, the PSA is ongoing (as opposed to time limited), efficient (in that structures and principles are reused for different projects), decentralized, diverse (in both subjects and researchers), and inclusive (of proposals, contributions, and other relevant input from anyone inside or outside the network). The PSA and other approaches to crowdsourced psychological science will advance understanding of mental processes and behaviors by enabling rigorous research and systematic examination of its generalizability
To which world regions does the valence–dominance model of social perception apply?
Over the past 10 years, Oosterhof and Todorov’s valence–dominance model has emerged as the most prominent account of
how people evaluate faces on social dimensions. In this model, two dimensions (valence and dominance) underpin social
judgements of faces. Because this model has primarily been developed and tested in Western regions, it is unclear whether
these findings apply to other regions. We addressed this question by replicating Oosterhof and Todorov’s methodology across
11 world regions, 41 countries and 11,570 participants. When we used Oosterhof and Todorov’s original analysis strategy,
the valence–dominance model generalized across regions. When we used an alternative methodology to allow for correlated
dimensions, we observed much less generalization. Collectively, these results suggest that, while the valence–dominance
model generalizes very well across regions when dimensions are forced to be orthogonal, regional differences are revealed

A multi-country test of brief reappraisal interventions on emotions during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The COVID-19 pandemic has increased negative emotions and decreased positive emotions globally. Left unchecked, these emotional changes might have a wide array of adverse impacts. To reduce negative emotions and increase positive emotions, we tested the effectiveness of reappraisal, an emotion-regulation strategy that modifies how one thinks about a situation. Participants from 87 countries and regions (n = 21,644) were randomly assigned to one of two brief reappraisal interventions (reconstrual or repurposing) or one of two control conditions (active or passive). Results revealed that both reappraisal interventions (vesus both control conditions) consistently reduced negative emotions and increased positive emotions across different measures. Reconstrual and repurposing interventions had similar effects. Importantly, planned exploratory analyses indicated that reappraisal interventions did not reduce intentions to practice preventive health behaviours. The findings demonstrate the viability of creating scalable, low-cost interventions for use around the world

Evaluating Person-Environment Fit in Cross-Cultural Contexts
People are acutely aware when they do not fit in or match well with others around them. The field of person-environment fit has sought to assess the positive benefits accrued to people who are more similar to their environment, often defined as the average characteristics of those around them. The purpose of the present study is to assess person-environment fit effects on psychological well-being in a cross-cultural context. This study uses measures of personality traits and cultural values assessed in 63 countries as part of the International Situations Project. Results were conducted using polynomial regression and plotted using Response Surface Analysis (RSA). Greater person-environment fit for almost all personality traits and values tested was associated with greater happiness for individuals across cultural contexts. However, the strongest predictors of happiness overall were from person effects, specifically personality traits, rather than environmental effects or person-environment fit effects. Additionally, the positive benefits for person-environment fit were typically only accrued for individuals already high on a particular trait or value in the socially desirable direction, suggesting the benefits of fitting in with a particular cultural group cannot outweigh the effects of socially desirable traits. Future work should focus on individual differences less strongly related to happiness and with less universal social desirability to further parse apart the potential benefits of person-environment fit

Journal of Research in Personality . 2022;99: 104236.Happier individuals have a greater tendency to experience positive affect in their day-to-day lives. The present study uses a multi-method approach to assess the observable behaviors correlated with happiness in two video-recorded, experimental social contexts resembling everyday situations: an interview about oneself and a conversation with strangers. The patterns of observed behaviors associated with happiness were highly similar between the two situations. Happier people smiled, acted playful and behaved cheerfully, while unhappy people expressed criticism, displayed guilt, or acted irritated. The behaviors of happier individuals not only reflect their greater positive affect in everyday situations but also highlights what might make them more enjoyable to be around
Situational experience around the world: A replication and extension in 62 countries
Objective: The current study seeks to replicate and extend principal findings reported in The World at 7:00, a project that examined the psychological experience of situations in 20 countries.
Method: Data were collected from participants in 62 countries (N = 15,318), recruited from universities by local collaborators to complete the study via a custom-built website using 42 languages.
Results: Several findings of the previous study were replicated. The average reported situational experience around the world was mildly positive. The same countries tended to be most alike in reported situational experience (r = .60) across the two studies, among the countries included in both. As in the previous study, the homogeneity of reported situational experience was significantly greater within than between countries, although the difference was small. The previously reported exploratory finding that negative aspects of situations varied more across countries than positive aspects did not replicate. Correlations between aspects of reported situational experience and country-level average value scores, personality, and demographic variables were largely similar between the two studies.
Conclusion: The findings underscore the importance of cross-cultural situational research and the need to replicate its results, and highlight the complex interplay of culture and situational experience
