Assessments of the Extent to which HealthâCare Providers Involve Patients in Decision Making: A Systematic Review of Studies Using the OPTION Instrument
Background: We have no clear overview of the extent to which health-care providers involve patients in the decision-making process during consultations. The Observing Patient Involvement in Decision Making instrument (OPTION) was designed to assess this. Objective: To systematically review studies that used the OPTION instrument to observe the extent to which health-care providers involve patients in decision making across a range of clinical contexts, including different health professions and lengths of consultation. We conducted online literature searches in multiple databases (2001-12) and gathered further data through networking
Mobility properties of the Hermes transposable element in transgenic lines of Aedes aegypti
The Hermes transposable element has been used to genetically transform a wide range of insect species, including the mosquito, Aedes aegypti, a vector of several important human pathogens. Hermes integrations into the mosquito germline are characterized by the non-canonical integration of the transposon and flanking plasmid and, once integrated, Hermes is stable in the presence of its transposase. In an effort to improve the post-integration mobility of Hermes in the germline of Ae. aegypti, a transgenic helper Mos1 construct expressing Hermes transposase under the control of a testis-specific promoter was crossed to a separate transgenic strain containing a target Hermes transposon. In less than 1% of the approximately 1,500 progeny from jumpstarter lines analyzed, evidence of putative Hermes germline remobilizations were detected. These recovered transposition events occur through an aberrant mechanism and provide insight into the non-canonical cut-and-paste transposition of Hermes in the germ line of Ae. aegypti

Reply to Komatsu et al.: From local social mindfulness to global sustainability efforts?
Komatsu et al. (1) argue that Van Doesum et al. (2)
may have overlooked the role of GDP in reporting a
positive association between social mindfulness
(SoMi) and the Environmental Performance Index
(EPI) at country level. Although the relationship
between EPI and SoMi is relatively weaker for countries with higher GDP, that does not imply that the
overall observed relationship is a statistical artifact.
Rather, it implies that GDP may be a moderator of
the relationship between EPI and SoMi. The
observed correlation is a valid result on average
across countries, and the actual effect size would, at
least to some degree, depend on GDP
Reply to Nielsen et al.: Social mindfulness is associated with countries' environmental performance and individual environmental concern.
Nielsen et al. (1) argue that Van Doesum et al. (2)
need to consider three points for their interpretation
of a positive association between individual-level
social mindfulness (SoMi) and environmental performance (EPI) at the country level (3). The association
is weaker when 1) it is controlled for GDP and 2)
when the data of three countries are removed; also,
3) the data do not address the association between
SoMi and individual-level environmental concern.
We discuss these points in turn
Reply to Nielsen et al. social mindfulness is associated with countriesâ environmental performance and individual environmental concern

Changing Behavior : A Theory- and Evidence-Based Approach
Social problems in many domains, including health, education, social relationships, and the workplace, have their origins in human behavior. The documented links between behavior and social problems have sparked interest in governments and organizations to develop effective interventions to promote behavior change. The Handbook of Behavior Change provides comprehensive coverage of contemporary theory, research, and practice on behavior change. The handbook incorporates theory- and evidence-based approaches to behavior change with chapters from leading theorists, researchers, and practitioners from multiple disciplines, including psychology, sociology, behavioral science, economics, and implementation science. Chapters are organized into three parts: (1) Theory and Behavior Change; (2) Methods and Processes of Behavior Change: Intervention Development, Application, and Translation; and (3) Behavior Change Interventions: Practical Guides to Behavior Change. This chapter provides an overview of the theory- and evidence-based approaches of the handbook, introduces the content of the handbook, and provides suggestions on how the handbook may be used by different readers. The handbook aims to provide all interested in behavior change, including researchers and students, practitioners, and policy makers, with up-to-date knowledge on behavior change and guidance on how to develop effective interventions to change behavior in different populations and contexts.Peer reviewe
