    Genomic and proteomic evidences unravel the UV-resistome of the poly-extremophile Acinetobacter sp. Ver3

    Ultraviolet radiation can damage biomolecules, with detrimental or even lethal effects for life. Even though lower wavelengths are filtered by the ozone layer, a significant amount of harmful UV-B and UV-A radiation reach Earth?s surface, particularly in high altitude environments. High-Altitude Andean Lakes (HAAL) are a group of disperse shallow lakes and salterns, located at the Dry Central Andes region in South America at altitudes above 3,000 m. As it is considered one of the highest UV-exposed environments, HAAL microbes constitute model systems to study UV-resistance mechanisms in environmental bacteria at various complexity levels. Herein, we present the genome sequence of Acinetobacter sp. Ver3, a gammaproteobacterium isolated from Lake Verde (4,400 m), together with further experimental evidence supporting the phenomenological observations regarding this bacterium ability to cope with increased UV-induced DNA damage. Comparison with the genomes of other Acinetobacter strains highlighted a number of unique genes, such as a novel cryptochrome. An ?UV-resistome? was defined, encompassing mainly, genes related to UV-damage repair on DNA and genes conferring an enhanced capacity for scavenging the reactive molecular species responsible for oxidative damage. In accordance, proteomic profiling of UV-exposed cells identified up-regulated proteins such as a specific cytoplasmic catalase, a putative regulator, and proteins associated to amino acid and protein synthesis. Down-regulated proteins were related to several energy-generating pathways such as glycolysis, beta-oxidation of fatty acids and electronic respiratory chain.     Field induced multiple order-by-disorder state selection in antiferromagnetic honeycomb bilayer lattice

    In this paper we present a detailed study of the antiferromagnetic classical Heisenberg model on a bilayer honeycomb lattice in a highly frustrated regime in presence of a magnetic field. This study shows strong evidence of entropic order-by-disorder selection in different sectors of the magnetization curve. For antiferromagnetic couplings J1=Jx=Jp/3J_1=J_x=J_p/3, we find that at low temperatures there are two different regions in the magnetization curve selected by this mechanism with different number of soft and zero modes. These regions present broken Z2Z_2 symmetry and are separated by a not fully collinear classical plateau at M=1/2M=1/2. At higher temperatures, there is a crossover from the conventional paramagnet to a cooperative magnet. Finally, we also discuss the low temperature behavior of the system for a less frustrated region, J1=Jx<Jp/3J_1=J_x<J_p/3.Comment: revised version - accepted for publication in Physical Review B - 12 pages, 11 figure

    Magnetization plateaux and jumps in a frustrated four-leg spin tube under a magnetic field

    We study the ground state phase diagram of a frustrated spin-1/2 four-leg spin tube in an external magnetic field. We explore the parameter space of this model in the regime of all-antiferromagnetic exchange couplings by means of three different approaches: analysis of low-energy effective Hamiltonian (LEH), a Hartree variational approach (HVA) and density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) for finite clusters. We find that in the limit of weakly interacting plaquettes, low-energy singlet, triplet and quintuplet states play an important role in the formation of fractional magnetization plateaux. We study the transition regions numerically and analytically, and find that they are described, at first order in a strong- coupling expansion, by an XXZ spin-1/2 chain in a magnetic field; the second-order terms give corrections to the XXZ model. All techniques provide consistent results which allow us to predict the existence of fractional plateaux in an important region in the space of parameters of the model.Comment: 10 pages, 7 figures.     Metastable and scaling regimes of a one-dimensional Kawasaki dynamics

    We investigate the large-time scaling regimes arising from a variety of metastable structures in a chain of Ising spins with both first- and second-neighbor couplings while subject to a Kawasaki dynamics. Depending on the ratio and sign of these former, different dynamic exponents are suggested by finite-size scaling analyses of relaxation times. At low but nonzero-temperatures these are calculated via exact diagonalizations of the evolution operator in finite chains under several activation barriers.     Phase ordering dynamics of reconstituting particles

    We consider the large-time dynamics of one-dimensional processes involving adsorption and desorption of extended hard-core particles (dimers, trimers,⋯, k-mers), while interacting through their constituent monomers. Desorption can occur whether or not these latter adsorbed together, which leads to reconstitution of k-mers and the appearance of sectors of motion with nonlocal conservation laws for k≥3. Dynamic exponents of the sector including the empty chain are evaluated by finite-size scaling analyses of the relaxation times embodied in the spectral gaps of evolution operators. For attractive interactions it is found that in the low-temperature limit such time scales converge to those of the Glauber dynamics, thus suggesting a diffusive universality class for k≥2. This is also tested by simulated quenches down to T=0, where a common scaling function emerges. By contrast, under repulsive interactions the low-temperature dynamics is characterized by metastable states which decay subdiffusively to a highly degenerate and partially jammed phase.Fil: Gómez Albarracín, Flavia Alejandra.     La sociedad salarial de servicios a debate: ciclo del capital, estructura social y subjetividad obrera

    We propose to explore the characteristics and development of services societies, from a particular point of view: wage relations sociology. From a theoreticaly informed empirical work we analyse and bring some conclusions about the capitalist superindustrial society of services in a semiphery of Europe: Spain. We try to approach on the making of modern commodity and its shapes; an empirical study of occupational distribution of work-force in the Spanish capital cycle in the last 25 years; an analyse of classes structure and its evolution in Spain. We also approach to the making of subjectivity and identity of workers, in the framework of ‘wage relation experience’ reality, and contribute some elements to interpretate possible structurant changes in this country.Nos proponemos tratar las características y desarrollo sociohistórico de las sociedades de servicios desde la sociología de las relaciones salariales. Desde un trabajo empírico informado teóricamente analizamos la sociedad capitalista superindustrial de servicios en un país semiperiférico como el español. Se tratará de arrojar algo de luz sobre la formación de la mercancía moderna y sus formas; un análisis empírico de la distribución ocupacional de la fuerza de trabajo en el ciclo del capital en su evolución en los últimos 25 años; un estudio de la estructura de clases y su desarrollo reciente, en torno a la condición socioeconómica. Aportaremos algunas conclusiones de la tesis doctoral del autor (Albarracín, 2003) acerca de la formación de la subjetividad de los trabajadores, en el marco de la experiencia de la relación salarial, y sus repercusiones estructurantes para el cambio social
