    Comparative study of injury incidence in soccer players during Regional Games of Sertãozinho – 2006 and Jaboticabal – 2008

    Soccer is one of the most popular and practiced sports in the world. This sport has been changed over the years and instead of emphasis on technique, currently the physical components are more favored, increasing the injury risk. Regional Games were created to stimulate young athletes and sports practice. The aim of this study was to perform a comparative epidemiological survey of male sub-21 soccer players injuries in the Regional Games of 2006 and 2008. This is an epidemiological and comparative study of analytical type. Records of assessment used at Regional Games of Sertãozinho 2006 and Jaboticabal 2008 were consulted. All soccer games were followed and the injuries found at games were registered by their incidence and classification. Injuries were classified according to the profile and anatomical segment. The highest incidence of injuries was found in Sertãozinho – 2006 with 163 injuries compared to Jaboticabal. Among these, muscle injuries were the most frequent (39,2 %), followed by contusions (32%) and sprains (24,5%). In Jaboticabal 2008, contusions were the most frequent injury (44%), followed by sprains (32%) and muscle injuries (20%). This study demonstrated that there is a high level of injury in these competitions and Jaboticabal (2008) presented a decreased in incidence of injury compared with Sertãozinho (2006)

    Validation of a 3d camera system for cycling analysis

    Background: Kinematic analysis aimed toward scientific investigation or professional purposes is commonly unaffordable and complex to use. Objective: The purpose of this study was to verify concurrent validation between a cycling-specific 3D camera and the gold-standard 3D general camera systems. Methods: Overall, 11 healthy amateur male triathletes were filmed riding their bicycles with Vicon 3D cameras and the Retul 3D cameras for bike fitting analysis simultaneously. All 18 kinematic measurements given by the bike fitting system were compared with the same data given by Vicon cameras through Pearson correlation (r), intraclass correlation coefficients (ICC), standard error measurements (SEM), and Bland–Altman (BA) analysis. Confidence intervals of 95% are given. Results: A very high correlation between cameras was found on six of 18 measurements. All other presented a high correlation between cameras (between 0.7 and 0.9). In total, six variables indicate a SEM of less than one degree between systems. Only two variables indicate a SEM higher than two degrees between camera systems. Overall, four measures indicate bias tendency according to BA. Conclusions: The cycling-specific led-emitting 3D camera system tested revealed a high or very high degree of correlation with the gold-standard 3D camera system used in laboratory motion capture. In total, 14 measurements of this equipment could be used in sports medicine clinical practice and even by researchers of cycling studies

    Web Health Application for ADHD Monitoring (WHAAM): Context-Driven Framework

    The Framework (FW) summarizes the experiences and vision of the WHAAM project partners, providing the basis for the development of the WHAAM app and online services. There are many approaches to the treatment of ADHD, with excellent resources available. This FW is a working tool based on partners' experiences, inspiring subsequent project activities. It is divided into three parts: part A explores general issues related to ADHD, focusing on key life contexts such as school, family, and social relationships. Each context is explored in terms of assessment, intervention and support. Part B delves into the relationship between ICT use and ADHD treatment. Finally, Part C briefly explains the main features of the WHAAM app, including functionality and interfaces. The WHAAM project considers the app and online service accessible via PC and mobile devices as a significant advancement in monitoring process management

    O bagaço de malte é um resíduo proveniente da produção de cerveja e sua disposição inadequada proporciona riscos e degradação do meio ambiente. Uma alternativa para seu reaproveitamento é a utilização como bioadsorvente, para isso torna-se necessária a secagem convectiva. Objetivou-se, assim, avaliar a secagem em diferentes temperaturas com variações de massa para verificar a que melhor pode ser utilizada como bioadsorvente. A secagem foi realizada em estufa de circulação de ar com planejamento fatorial completo 22 com três repetições no ponto central. Foram avaliadas as curvas de secagem, bem como avaliados modelos matemáticos para descrever o comportamento da cinética de secagem. A variável dependente analisada neste trabalho foi a constante de secagem a partir de modelos matemáticos ( Modelo de Newton, Page, Page modificado e o Modelo de Fick) de secagem empíricos e as variáveis independentes foram as temperaturas 50°C, 60°C e 70°C e a massa do produto, 100g, 200g e 300g. Foi realizado a análise estatística, logo, com os resultados das curvas de cinética de secagem obteve-se que todos os ensaios foram representados por modelos, entretanto o que mais se adequou aos valores experimentais foi o de Page, obtendo melhor ajuste para descrever a umidade em função do tempo de secagem do bagaço

    Pervasive gaps in Amazonian ecological research

    Biodiversity loss is one of the main challenges of our time,1,2 and attempts to address it require a clear un derstanding of how ecological communities respond to environmental change across time and space.3,4 While the increasing availability of global databases on ecological communities has advanced our knowledge of biodiversity sensitivity to environmental changes,5–7 vast areas of the tropics remain understudied.8–11 In the American tropics, Amazonia stands out as the world’s most diverse rainforest and the primary source of Neotropical biodiversity,12 but it remains among the least known forests in America and is often underrepre sented in biodiversity databases.13–15 To worsen this situation, human-induced modifications16,17 may elim inate pieces of the Amazon’s biodiversity puzzle before we can use them to understand how ecological com munities are responding. To increase generalization and applicability of biodiversity knowledge,18,19 it is thus crucial to reduce biases in ecological research, particularly in regions projected to face the most pronounced environmental changes. We integrate ecological community metadata of 7,694 sampling sites for multiple or ganism groups in a machine learning model framework to map the research probability across the Brazilian Amazonia, while identifying the region’s vulnerability to environmental change. 15%–18% of the most ne glected areas in ecological research are expected to experience severe climate or land use changes by 2050.     Photography-based taxonomy is inadequate, unnecessary, and potentially harmful for biological sciences

    The question whether taxonomic descriptions naming new animal species without type specimen(s) deposited in collections should be accepted for publication by scientific journals and allowed by the Code has already been discussed in Zootaxa (Dubois & Nemésio 2007; Donegan 2008, 2009; Nemésio 2009a–b; Dubois 2009; Gentile & Snell 2009; Minelli 2009; Cianferoni & Bartolozzi 2016; Amorim et al. 2016). This question was again raised in a letter supported by 35 signatories published in the journal Nature (Pape et al. 2016) on 15 September 2016. On 25 September 2016, the following rebuttal (strictly limited to 300 words as per the editorial rules of Nature) was submitted to Nature, which on 18 October 2016 refused to publish it. As we think this problem is a very important one for zoological taxonomy, this text is published here exactly as submitted to Nature, followed by the list of the 493 taxonomists and collection-based researchers who signed it in the short time span from 20 September to 6 October 2016

    Global burden of 369 diseases and injuries in 204 countries and territories, 1990–2019: a systematic analysis for the Global Burden of Disease Study 2019

    Background: In an era of shifting global agendas and expanded emphasis on non-communicable diseases and injuries along with communicable diseases, sound evidence on trends by cause at the national level is essential. The Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (GBD) provides a systematic scientific assessment of published, publicly available, and contributed data on incidence, prevalence, and mortality for a mutually exclusive and collectively exhaustive list of diseases and injuries. Methods: GBD estimates incidence, prevalence, mortality, years of life lost (YLLs), years lived with disability (YLDs), and disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs) due to 369 diseases and injuries, for two sexes, and for 204 countries and territories. Input data were extracted from censuses, household surveys, civil registration and vital statistics, disease registries, health service use, air pollution monitors, satellite imaging, disease notifications, and other sources. Cause-specific death rates and cause fractions were calculated using the Cause of Death Ensemble model and spatiotemporal Gaussian process regression. Cause-specific deaths were adjusted to match the total all-cause deaths calculated as part of the GBD population, fertility, and mortality estimates. Deaths were multiplied by standard life expectancy at each age to calculate YLLs. A Bayesian meta-regression modelling tool, DisMod-MR 2.1, was used to ensure consistency between incidence, prevalence, remission, excess mortality, and cause-specific mortality for most causes. Prevalence estimates were multiplied by disability weights for mutually exclusive sequelae of diseases and injuries to calculate YLDs. We considered results in the context of the Socio-demographic Index (SDI), a composite indicator of income per capita, years of schooling, and fertility rate in females younger than 25 years. Uncertainty intervals (UIs) were generated for every metric using the 25th and 975th ordered 1000 draw values of the posterior distribution. Findings: Global health has steadily improved over the past 30 years as measured by age-standardised DALY rates. After taking into account population growth and ageing, the absolute number of DALYs has remained stable. Since 2010, the pace of decline in global age-standardised DALY rates has accelerated in age groups younger than 50 years compared with the 1990–2010 time period, with the greatest annualised rate of decline occurring in the 0–9-year age group. Six infectious diseases were among the top ten causes of DALYs in children younger than 10 years in 2019: lower respiratory infections (ranked second), diarrhoeal diseases (third), malaria (fifth), meningitis (sixth), whooping cough (ninth), and sexually transmitted infections (which, in this age group, is fully accounted for by congenital syphilis; ranked tenth). In adolescents aged 10–24 years, three injury causes were among the top causes of DALYs: road injuries (ranked first), self-harm (third), and interpersonal violence (fifth). Five of the causes that were in the top ten for ages 10–24 years were also in the top ten in the 25–49-year age group: road injuries (ranked first), HIV/AIDS (second), low back pain (fourth), headache disorders (fifth), and depressive disorders (sixth). In 2019, ischaemic heart disease and stroke were the top-ranked causes of DALYs in both the 50–74-year and 75-years-and-older age groups. Since 1990, there has been a marked shift towards a greater proportion of burden due to YLDs from non-communicable diseases and injuries. In 2019, there were 11 countries where non-communicable disease and injury YLDs constituted more than half of all disease burden. Decreases in age-standardised DALY rates have accelerated over the past decade in countries at the lower end of the SDI range, while improvements have started to stagnate or even reverse in countries with higher SDI. Interpretation: As disability becomes an increasingly large component of disease burden and a larger component of health expenditure, greater research and developm nt investment is needed to identify new, more effective intervention strategies. With a rapidly ageing global population, the demands on health services to deal with disabling outcomes, which increase with age, will require policy makers to anticipate these changes. The mix of universal and more geographically specific influences on health reinforces the need for regular reporting on population health in detail and by underlying cause to help decision makers to identify success stories of disease control to emulate, as well as opportunities to improve.
