The objective of this study is to analyze the views of preservice chemistry and physics teachers about the professional practice and the influence of pedagogic disciplines on their formation. In Portugal, traditional food markets have shown a decrease in popularity, mostly because of the growth of organized retailing and increased globalization. Attempts have been made to find what motivates consumers to purchase locally produced foods. The objective of this work was the characterization of consumers from Portuguese traditional food markets, and the identification of their attitudes and perceptions towards those markets. The final aim was to identify opportunities and challenges of traditional food markets' retailers. Interviews were conducted with consumers at traditional food markets from all over Portugal. One hundred forty-four consumers were asked about their shopping profile, reasons to visit the market, overall degree of satisfaction, as well as socio-economic characteristics. The most bought products on traditional food markets are fresh fruits and vegetables followed by fresh fish and flowers. The main reasons pointed out by consumers to visit these markets are produce freshness (60%) price/quality relationship, i. e., a low price for a certain quality (34%) and the price of traditional products (34%). Moreover, results suggest an overall degree of satisfaction with traditional markets, showing that with an adequate communication strategy more consumers could be allured to them

The genus Alternaria is one of the most common black moulds and appears to be increasing as a causative agent of subcutaneous phaeohyphomycosis, particularly among immunosuppressed patients. A 53-year-old patient who had received a kidney transplant presented with multiple verrucous lesions on the distal extremities. Positive histopathology and cultures, in addition to rDNA ITS region sequencing, identified the fungal isolate as Alternaria infectoria. Oral itraconazole was administered for 10 months. A follow-up at 15 months demonstrated no signs of infection. Clinical manifestations of cutaneous alternariosis vary significantly and only a few cases have been described in the literature. Although optimal treatment options remain controversial, this case of phaeohyphomycosis was successfully treated with itraconazole monotherapy

Background and objectives: Randomized trials for mechanical thrombectomy (MT) excluded patients with ischemic strokes due to isolated posterior cerebral artery occlusion (IPCAO), and there is no evidence for best acute treatment strategy in these patients. We aimed to assess the effectiveness and safety of MT in acute IPCAO. Methods: We retrospectively analyzed consecutive patients with acute stroke due to IPCAO submitted to MT and/or intravenous thrombolysis (IVT), between 2015-2019. Effectiveness outcomes (recanalization rate, first-pass effect, NIHSS 24h improvement and 3-month Modified Ranking Scale - mRS) and safety outcomes (complications, symptomatic intracranial hemorrhage (SICH) and 3-month mortality) were described and compared between groups. Results: A total of 38 patients were included, 25 underwent MT and 13 had IVT alone. Successful and complete recanalization were achieved in 68% and 52% of MT patients, respectively. NIHSS improvement at 24h was found in 56% of MT patients versus 30.8% of patients submitted to IVT alone (OR [95% CI]=2.86 [0.69-11.82]) and excellent functional outcome at 3 months (mRS≤1) was achieved in 54.2% of MT patients versus 38.5% in the IVT group (OR [95% CI]=1.60 [0.41-6.32]). Complications occurred in 3 (12%) procedures and there were no SICH. Mortality at 3 months was 20% in the MT group and 15.4% in patients submitted to IVT alone. Conclusions: Our results reflect a real-world scenario in a single center and seem to support the recently growing literature showing that MT is a feasible and safe treatment in IPCAO, with favorable effectiveness.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Risk stratification for small for gestational age for the Brazilian population: a secondary analysis of the Birth in Brazil study.

Risk-stratification screening for SGA has been proposed in high-income countries to prevent perinatal morbidity and mortality. There is paucity of data from middle-income settings. The aim of this study is to explore risk factors for SGA in Brazil and assess potential for risk stratification. This population-based study is a secondary analysis of Birth in Brazil study, conducted in 266 maternity units between 2011 and 2012. Univariate and multivariate logistic regressions were performed, and population attributable fraction estimated for early and all pregnancy factors. We calculated absolute risk, odds ratio, and population prevalence of single or combined factors stratified by parity. Factors associated with SGA were maternal lupus (ORadj 4.36, 95% CI [2.32-8.18]), hypertensive disorders in pregnancy (ORadj 2.72, 95% CI [2.28-3.24]), weight gain < 5 kg (ORadj 2.37, 95% CI [1.99-2.83]), smoking at late pregnancy (ORadj 2.04, 95% CI [1.60-2.59]), previous low birthweight (ORadj 2.22, 95% CI [1.79-2.75]), nulliparity (ORadj 1.81, 95% CI [1.60-2.05]), underweight (ORadj 1.61, 95% CI [1.36-1.92]) and socioeconomic status (SES) < 5th centile (ORadj 1.23, 95% CI [1.05-1.45]). Having two or more risk factors (prevalence of 4.4% and 8.0%) was associated with a 2 and fourfold increase in the risk for SGA in nulliparous and multiparous, respectively. Early and all pregnancy risk factors allow development of risk-stratification for SGA. Implementation of risk stratification coupled with specific strategies for reduction of risk and increased surveillance has the potential to contribute to the reduction of stillbirth in Brazil through increased detection of SGA, appropriate management and timely delivery

Massively parallel computing on an organic molecular layer

Current computers operate at enormous speeds of ~10^13 bits/s, but their principle of sequential logic operation has remained unchanged since the 1950s. Though our brain is much slower on a per-neuron base (~10^3 firings/s), it is capable of remarkable decision-making based on the collective operations of millions of neurons at a time in ever-evolving neural circuitry. Here we use molecular switches to build an assembly where each molecule communicates-like neurons-with many neighbors simultaneously. The assembly's ability to reconfigure itself spontaneously for a new problem allows us to realize conventional computing constructs like logic gates and Voronoi decompositions, as well as to reproduce two natural phenomena: heat diffusion and the mutation of normal cells to cancer cells. This is a shift from the current static computing paradigm of serial bit-processing to a regime in which a large number of bits are processed in parallel in dynamically changing hardware.Comment: 25 pages, 6 figure
