    On pre-image iterations for speech enhancement

    In this paper, we apply kernel PCA for speech enhancement and derive pre-image iterations for speech enhancement. Both methods make use of a Gaussian kernel. The kernel variance serves as tuning parameter that has to be adapted according to the SNR and the desired degree of de-noising. We develop a method to derive a suitable value for the kernel variance from a noise estimate to adapt pre-image iterations to arbitrary SNRs. In experiments, we compare the performance of kernel PCA and pre-image iterations in terms of objective speech quality measures and automatic speech recognition. The speech data is corrupted by white and colored noise at 0, 5, 10, and 15 dB SNR. As a benchmark, we provide results of the generalized subspace method, of spectral subtraction, and of the minimum mean-square error log-spectral amplitude estimator. In terms of the scores of the PEASS (Perceptual Evaluation Methods for Audio Source Separation) toolbox, the proposed methods achieve a similar performance as the reference methods. The speech recognition experiments show that the utterances processed by pre-image iterations achieve a consistently better word recognition accuracy than the unprocessed noisy utterances and than the utterances processed by the generalized subspace method

    Die vorliegende Diplomarbeit diskutiert Konstruktionen und Repräsentationen des Frauentypus ‚mad bride‘ auf theoretischer und praktischer Ebene, und versucht dabei, naturalisierte Kategorien von Identität, Schönheit und Handlungsmöglichkeiten der Braut innerhalb des patriarchalen Diskursapparates aufzubrechen und neu zu konfigurieren. Um dieses Vorhaben in einen größeren akademischen Rahmen setzen zu können, wird vorerst das Konzept Identität auf allgemeiner sowie spezifischer Ebene, und schließlich anhand Julia Kristevas Theorie des Abjekts vorgestellt. Da sowohl ‚mad‘ als auch ‚bride‘ mit Ambiguitäten und Inkohärenzen befrachtet sind, wird eine Definition eigens für die Verhandlung der Frauenfigur mad bride als gerechtfertigt und notwendig erachtet. Das Modell der mad bride versucht schließlich eine geeignete theoretische Grundlage für weitere Analysen dieses Konstrukts von partikularistischer Femininität zu generieren. Die kulturtheoretische Definition von mad bride, die dabei entwickelt wird, geht von semantischen Überdefinitionen aus, aus denen sich spezifische Arten von Exzess ergeben. Im Besonderen nimmt diese Brautfigur eine paradoxe Subjektposition ein, die mithilfe binärer Dichotomien (A/B) aufgeschlüsselt werden kann. Während die humanistische Konzeption von Identität auf der Prämisse der Exklusivität beruht (eine Definition von ‚A‘ ergibt sich aus dem, was ‚A‘ nicht ist), inkludiert die mad bride sowohl die Markierung ‚A‘, als auch ‚B‘ in ihrer Identität und ihrem Körper. Die Haupthypothese dieser Arbeit ist, dass sich diese exzessive, paradoxe Position materialisieren muss. Daraus ergibt sich ein Forschungsinteresse für Materialisierungsprozesse, die innerhalb Kristevas Rahmens des Abjekts gelesen werden. Durchaus als Ausbruchstheorie und Forum für deviante Strategien der Selbstbestimmung gedacht, wird dieses Modell schließlich an einem konkreten Beispiel, der Six Feet Under-Episode ‚A Coat of White Primer‘, angewandt

    Multi-scale variations in invertebrate and fish megafauna in the mid-eastern Clarion Clipperton Zone

    The abyssal seafloor of the Clarion Clipperton Zone (CCZ) in the central Pacific has the largest known deposits of polymetallic nodules and associated benthic faunal communities with high biodiversity. The environmental factors that structure these communities, both at regional and local scales, are not well understood. In this study, seabed image surveys were used to assess distribution patterns in invertebrate and fish megafauna (>1 cm) at multiple scales in relation to key environmental factors: food supply to the seabed varying at the regional scale (hundreds of km), seabed geomorphological variations varying at the broad local scale (tens of km), and seabed nodule cover varying at the fine local scale (tens of meters). We found significant differences in megafaunal density and community composition between all study areas. Variations in faunal density did not appear to match with regional productivity gradients, although faunal density generally decreased with increasing water depth (from E to W). In contrast, geomorphology and particularly nodule cover appeared to exert strong control on local faunal abundance and community composition, but not in species richness. Local variations in faunal density and beta-diversity, particularly those driven by nodule presence (within study areas), were of comparable magnitude to those observed at a regional level (between study areas). However, regional comparisons of megabenthic assemblages showed clear shifts in dominance between taxonomic groups (perceivable even at Phylum levels) across the mid-eastern CCZ seabed, suggesting a higher regional heterogeneity than was previously thought

    There is obvious interest in gaining insights into the epidemiology and evolution of the virus that has recently emerged in humans as the cause of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. The recent paper by Forster et al. (1), analyzed 160 SARS-CoV-2 full genomes available (https://www.gisaid.org/) in early March 2020. The central claim is the identification of three main SARS-CoV-2 types, named A, B, and C, circulating in different proportions among Europeans and Americans (types A and C) and East Asian (type B). According to a median-joining network analysis, variant A is proposed to be the ancestral type because it links to the sequence of a coronavirus from bats, used as an outgroup to trace the ancestral origin of the human strains. The authors further suggest that the “ancestral Wuhan B-type virus is immunologically or environmentally adapted to a large section of the East Asian population, and may need to mutate to overcome resistance outside East Asia”. There are several serious flaws with their findings and interpretation. First, and most obviously, the sequence identity between SARS-CoV-2 and the bat virus is only 96.2%, implying that these viral genomes (which are nearly 30,000 nucleotides long) differ by more than 1,000 mutations. Such a distant outgroup is unlikely to provide a reliable root for the network. Yet, strangely, the branch to the bat virus, in Figure 1 of the paper, is only 16 or 17 mutations in length. Indeed, the network seems to be mis-rooted because (see Supplementary Figure 4) a virus from Wuhan from week 0 (24th December 2019) is portrayed as a descendant of a clade of viruses collected in weeks 1-9 (presumably from many places outside China), which makes no evolutionary (2), nor epidemiological sense (3).N

    Connection between Telomerase Activity in PBMC and Markers of Inflammation and Endothelial Dysfunction in Patients with Metabolic Syndrome

    Metabolic syndrome (MS) is a constellation of metabolic derangements associated with vascular endothelial dysfunction and oxidative stress and is widely regarded as an inflammatory condition, accompanied by an increased risk for cardiovascular disease. The present study tried to investigate the implications of telomerase activity with inflammation and impaired endothelial function in patients with metabolic syndrome. Telomerase activity in circulating peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC), TNF-α, IL-6 and ADMA were monitored in 39 patients with MS and 20 age and sex-matched healthy volunteers. Telomerase activity in PBMC, TNF-α, IL-6 and ADMA were all significantly elevated in patients with MS compared to healthy volunteers. PBMC telomerase was negatively correlated with HDL and positively correlated with ADMA, while no association between TNF-α and IL-6 was observed. IL-6 was increasing with increasing systolic pressure both in the patients with MS and in the healthy volunteers, while smoking and diabetes were positively correlated with IL-6 only in the patients' group. In conclusion, in patients with MS characterised by a strong dyslipidemic profile and low diabetes prevalence, significant telomerase activity was detected in circulating PBMC, along with elevated markers of inflammation and endothelial dysfunction. These findings suggest a prolonged activity of inflammatory cells in the studied state of this metabolic disorder that could represent a contributory pathway in the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis

    Search for dark matter produced in association with bottom or top quarks in √s = 13 TeV pp collisions with the ATLAS detector

    A search for weakly interacting massive particle dark matter produced in association with bottom or top quarks is presented. Final states containing third-generation quarks and miss- ing transverse momentum are considered. The analysis uses 36.1 fb−1 of proton–proton collision data recorded by the ATLAS experiment at √s = 13 TeV in 2015 and 2016. No significant excess of events above the estimated backgrounds is observed. The results are in- terpreted in the framework of simplified models of spin-0 dark-matter mediators. For colour- neutral spin-0 mediators produced in association with top quarks and decaying into a pair of dark-matter particles, mediator masses below 50 GeV are excluded assuming a dark-matter candidate mass of 1 GeV and unitary couplings. For scalar and pseudoscalar mediators produced in association with bottom quarks, the search sets limits on the production cross- section of 300 times the predicted rate for mediators with masses between 10 and 50 GeV and assuming a dark-matter mass of 1 GeV and unitary coupling. Constraints on colour- charged scalar simplified models are also presented. Assuming a dark-matter particle mass of 35 GeV, mediator particles with mass below 1.1 TeV are excluded for couplings yielding a dark-matter relic density consistent with measurements

    Robust estimation of bacterial cell count from optical density

    Optical density (OD) is widely used to estimate the density of cells in liquid culture, but cannot be compared between instruments without a standardized calibration protocol and is challenging to relate to actual cell count. We address this with an interlaboratory study comparing three simple, low-cost, and highly accessible OD calibration protocols across 244 laboratories, applied to eight strains of constitutive GFP-expressing E. coli. Based on our results, we recommend calibrating OD to estimated cell count using serial dilution of silica microspheres, which produces highly precise calibration (95.5% of residuals <1.2-fold), is easily assessed for quality control, also assesses instrument effective linear range, and can be combined with fluorescence calibration to obtain units of Molecules of Equivalent Fluorescein (MEFL) per cell, allowing direct comparison and data fusion with flow cytometry measurements: in our study, fluorescence per cell measurements showed only a 1.07-fold mean difference between plate reader and flow cytometry data
