A novel update rule of HALS algorithm for nonnegative matrix factorization and Zangwill’s global convergence

Nonnegative Matrix Factorization (NMF) has attracted a great deal of attention as an effective technique for dimensionality reduction of large-scale nonnegative data. Given a nonnegative matrix, NMF aims to obtain two low-rank nonnegative factor matrices by solving a constrained optimization problem. The Hierarchical Alternating Least Squares (HALS) algorithm is a well-known and widely-used iterative method for solving such optimization problems. However, the original update rule used in the HALS algorithm is not well defined. In this paper, we propose a novel well-defined update rule of the HALS algorithm, and prove its global convergence in the sense of Zangwill. Unlike conventional globally-convergent update rules, the proposed one allows variables to take the value of zero and hence can obtain sparse factor matrices. We also present two stopping conditions that guarantee the finite termination of the HALS algorithm. The practical usefulness of the proposed update rule is shown through experiments using real-world datasets

From the part soluble at pH 6.4 of tryptic hydrolyzate of β-chain in Macaca mulatta monkey hemoglobin, the so-called `soluble tryptic peptides\u27 were isolated and purified by column and paper chromatography. Four of these peptides, which were called βT9, βT13, βT14, and βT15, were hydrolyzed with pepsin and isolated by column and paper chromatography. Then, amino acid compositions of the four peptides were analyzed and sequences were determined by the DNP and PTC methods. The results were compared respectively with the amino acid sequences of the corresponding peptides in human hemoglobin. Differences between the two hemoglobins were found in βT9 and βT13, namely, human hemoglobin has alanine at the tenth position from the N-terminus of βT9, whereas macaca mulatta monkey hemoglobin has asparagine. Similarly, the former has proline at the fifth position from the N-terminus of βT13, whereas the latter, glutamine. The sequence of the remaining forty amino acid residues were all the same with each other

A Real-life Test of Face Recognition System for Dialogue Interface Robot in Ubiquitous Environments

    Get PDF
This paper discusses a face recognition system for a dialogue interface robot that really works in ubiquitous environments and reports an experimental result of real-life test in a ubiquitous environment. While a central module of the face recognition system is composed of the decomposed eigenface method, the system also includes a special face detection module and the face registration module. Since face recognition should work on images captured by a camera equipped on the interface robot, all the methods are tuned for the interface robot. The face detection and recognition modules accomplish robust face detection and recognition when one of the registered users is talking to the robot. Some interesting results are reported with careful analysis of a sufficient real-life experiment.</p

Conversion of Normal Ly-1-Positive B-Lineage Cells into Ly-1-Positive Macrophages in Long-Term Bone Marrow Cultures

We obtained eight different cell lines in the long-term bone marrow culture system that showed a germ-line configuration of the joining (J) region segments of the Ig heavy-chain (IgH) genes. Their surface markers were CD45R+, Ly-1+, Lyb-2+, cIgM-, sIgM-, Ia-, Thy-1-, Mac-1-, and IL-2R (Tac)+. Use of very young mice and the presence of IL-5 were important for preferential promotion of the survival of B-lineage lymphocytes bearing the Ly-1 markers. When we treated two of them (J8 and J10) with 5-azacytidine for 24 h followed by co-culture with stromal cells and IL-.5, they became Ly-1+, sIgM+ B cells, and Ly-1+, Mac-1+ macrophagelike cells, respectively. After other early lymphoid lines (J1, J8, and J13) were maintained by co-culture with ST2 and IL-5 for more than a year, they showed a heterogeneous DNA rearrangement profile of the J region segment of the IgH gene, although only J13 rearranged the κ-light chain gene. Northern blot analysis revealed that these cell lines expressed Cμ-mRNA, and λ5-mRNA, consistent with normal pre-B cells. Intriguingly, J1, J8, and J13 expressed c-fms mRNA constitutively. When J13 cells were co-cultured with ST2 and GM-CSF in place of ST2 and IL-5, they acquired Mac-1 expression and retained Ly-1 expression. They were morphologically macrophages, nonspecific-esterase-positive, and showed phagocytosis of latex beads. These results support evidence for a close relationship between the myeloid and Ly-1+ B-cell pathways of differentiation, and indicate that our IL- 5-dependent clones are multipotential intermediates in differentiation from pro-B cells to B cells and macrophages
