    The boundary Riemann solver coming from the real vanishing viscosity approximation

    We study a family of initial boundary value problems associated to mixed hyperbolic-parabolic systems: v^{\epsilon} _t + A (v^{\epsilon}, \epsilon v^{\epsilon}_x ) v^{\epsilon}_x = \epsilon B (v^{\epsilon} ) v^{\epsilon}_{xx} The conservative case is, in particular, included in the previous formulation. We suppose that the solutions vϔv^{\epsilon} to these problems converge to a unique limit. Also, it is assumed smallness of the total variation and other technical hypotheses and it is provided a complete characterization of the limit. The most interesting points are the following two. First, the boundary characteristic case is considered, i.e. one eigenvalue of AA can be 00. Second, we take into account the possibility that BB is not invertible. To deal with this case, we take as hypotheses conditions that were introduced by Kawashima and Shizuta relying on physically meaningful examples. We also introduce a new condition of block linear degeneracy. We prove that, if it is not satisfied, then pathological behaviours may occur.Comment: 84 pages, 6 figures.     Multidimensional Conservation Laws: Overview, Problems, and Perspective

    Some of recent important developments are overviewed, several longstanding open problems are discussed, and a perspective is presented for the mathematical theory of multidimensional conservation laws. Some basic features and phenomena of multidimensional hyperbolic conservation laws are revealed, and some samples of multidimensional systems/models and related important problems are presented and analyzed with emphasis on the prototypes that have been solved or may be expected to be solved rigorously at least for some cases. In particular, multidimensional steady supersonic problems and transonic problems, shock reflection-diffraction problems, and related effective nonlinear approaches are analyzed. A theory of divergence-measure vector fields and related analytical frameworks for the analysis of entropy solutions are discussed.Comment: 43 pages, 3 figure

    Congestion in a macroscopic model of self-driven particles modeling gregariousness

    International audienceWe analyze a macroscopic model with a maximal density constraint which describes short range repulsion in biological systems. This system aims at modeling finite-size particles which cannot overlap and repel each other when they are too close. The parts of the fluid where the maximal density is reached behave like incompressible fluids while lower density regions are compressible. This paper investigates the transition between the compressible and incompressible regions. To capture this transition, we study a one-dimensional Riemann problem and introduce a perturbation problem which regularizes the compressible-incompressible transition. Specific difficulties related to the non-conservativity of the problem are discussed

    Presença de formas amastigotas de Leishmania chagasi e perfil leucocitårio no aparelho reprodutivo de cães

    A leishmaniose visceral (LV) Ă© uma zoonose causada pelo protozoĂĄrio Leishmania (Leishmania) chagasi. A leishmaniose visceral canina (LVC) Ă© a doença de maior relevĂąncia zoonĂłtica. Usualmente, a infecção ocorre entre um hospedeiro invertebrado para um hospedeiro vertebrado, entretanto, a transmissĂŁo na ausĂȘncia do vetor jĂĄ Ă© conhecida. O objetivo principal deste estudo foi identificar a presença de formas amastigotas, quantificar as cĂ©lulas leucocitĂĄrias, estimar o risco relativo da presença de formas amastigotas no aparelho reprodutivo de cĂŁes sorologicamente positivos com e sem sinais clĂ­nicos. Para isso, foram utilizados cĂŁes sem raça definida, sexualmente maduros e testados sorologicamente para LVC (com sinais clĂ­nicos, n=25; sem sinais clĂ­nicos, n=25), que apĂłs eutanĂĄsia, tiveram fragmentos de testĂ­culo, epidĂ­dimo (cabeça, corpo e cauda) e glĂąndula prostĂĄtica (selecionados ao acaso) impressos em lĂąminas. Um grupo de 20 cĂŁs sorologicamente negativos e sem sinais clĂ­nicos foi usado como controle. Amostras do baço foram incluĂ­das como controle parasitolĂłgico positivo. O percentual de linfĂłcitos foi superior (P<0,05) no corpo e cauda do epidĂ­dimo, assim como no testĂ­culo. MacrĂłfagos foram superiores (P<0,05) apenas nas regiĂ”es do corpo e cauda epididimais. A presença de amastigotas correlacionou-se entre as distintas regiĂ”es do aparelho reprodutivo. Nos sintomĂĄticos variaram entre 0,50 a 0,80 e entre 0,79 a 0,95 nos assintomĂĄticos. A presença de amastigotas no testĂ­culo dos cĂŁes sintomĂĄticos foi 6,5 vezes superior aos cĂŁes assintomĂĄticos. Os resultados obtidos demonstram o potencial epidemiolĂłgico da transmissĂŁo venĂ©rea da doença, principalmente em ĂĄreas onde os programas de controle da LVC nĂŁo consideram esta forma de transmissĂŁo, que pode ser importante em populaçÔes caninas nĂŁo esterilizadas

    Search for strong gravity in multijet final states produced in pp collisions at √s=13 TeV using the ATLAS detector at the LHC

    A search is conducted for new physics in multijet final states using 3.6 inverse femtobarns of data from proton-proton collisions at √s = 13TeV taken at the CERN Large Hadron Collider with the ATLAS detector. Events are selected containing at least three jets with scalar sum of jet transverse momenta (HT) greater than 1TeV. No excess is seen at large HT and limits are presented on new physics: models which produce final states containing at least three jets and having cross sections larger than 1.6 fb with HT > 5.8 TeV are excluded. Limits are also given in terms of new physics models of strong gravity that hypothesize additional space-time dimensions

    Operation and performance of the ATLAS semiconductor tracker

    The semiconductor tracker is a silicon microstrip detector forming part of the inner tracking system of the ATLAS experiment at the LHC. The operation and performance of the semiconductor tracker during the first years of LHC running are described. More than 99% of the detector modules were operational during this period, with an average intrinsic hit efficiency of (99.74±0.04)%. The evolution of the noise occupancy is discussed, and measurements of the Lorentz angle, Ύ-ray production and energy loss presented. The alignment of the detector is found to be stable at the few-micron level over long periods of time. Radiation damage measurements, which include the evolution of detector leakage currents, are found to be consistent with predictions and are used in the verification of radiation background simulations

    Search for H→γγ produced in association with top quarks and constraints on the Yukawa coupling between the top quark and the Higgs boson using data taken at 7 TeV and 8 TeV with the ATLAS detector

    A search is performed for Higgs bosons produced in association with top quarks using the diphoton decay mode of the Higgs boson. Selection requirements are optimized separately for leptonic and fully hadronic final states from the top quark decays. The dataset used corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 4.5 fb−14.5 fb−1 of proton–proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 7 TeV and 20.3 fb−1 at 8 TeV recorded by the ATLAS detector at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. No significant excess over the background prediction is observed and upper limits are set on the tt¯H production cross section. The observed exclusion upper limit at 95% confidence level is 6.7 times the predicted Standard Model cross section value. In addition, limits are set on the strength of the Yukawa coupling between the top quark and the Higgs boson, taking into account the dependence of the tt¯H and tH cross sections as well as the H→γγ branching fraction on the Yukawa coupling. Lower and upper limits at 95% confidence level are set at −1.3 and +8.0 times the Yukawa coupling strength in the Standard Model

    Measurement of the cross section of high transverse momentum Z→bb̄ production in proton–proton collisions at √s = 8 TeV with the ATLAS detector

    This Letter reports the observation of a high transverse momentum Z→bb̄ signal in proton–proton collisions at √s=8 TeV and the measurement of its production cross section. The data analysed were collected in 2012 with the ATLAS detector at the LHC and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 19.5 fb−Âč. The Z→bb̄ decay is reconstructed from a pair of b -tagged jets, clustered with the anti-ktkt jet algorithm with R=0.4R=0.4, that have low angular separation and form a dijet with pT>200 GeVpT>200 GeV. The signal yield is extracted from a fit to the dijet invariant mass distribution, with the dominant, multi-jet background mass shape estimated by employing a fully data-driven technique that reduces the dependence of the analysis on simulation. The fiducial cross section is determined to be σZ→bbÂŻfid=2.02±0.20 (stat.) ±0.25 (syst.)±0.06 (lumi.) pb=2.02±0.33 pb, in good agreement with next-to-leading-order theoretical predictions
