    Estimation of Hydrological Parameters from Geoelectrical Measurements

    In the coastal aquifer of the lowlands on the right side of the river Sinaloa there is need for fresh water for agricultural development since, around 15% of the water used in agricultural irrigation, is from underground sources. This situation is exacerbated in periods of drought, which promotes drilling with the risk of finding brackish water in them; besides, there is the risk of not meeting water demand due to low hydraulic transmissivity (T) of the aquifer, putting at risk the drilling costs that this implies. In this sense, the determination of T and K (hydraulic conductivity) is important for the development and management of groundwater exploitation of the study area. Generally by means of pumping tests in wells, T is obtained, with high costs, so there are few values of T. K is generally obtained by wells and laboratory test. The aim of this chapter is to establish an empirical relationship between T and K with Dar-Zarrouk parameter in porous media, transverse resistance (T R ), in addition to a characterization of the water quality through the electrical resistivity. This parameter is estimated from surface resistivity measurements, which are more economical in relation to the pumping tests; thus, T was characterized in the study area. The coefficient of correlation of the exponential adjustment is 0.79 and the relation is T=137185.7 TR0.020758−156691 and K=367.210.0548−518.813 with coefficient of correlation of 0.678

    Background: The knowledge on the management of water as a vital resource to develop agriculture allows having greater effectiveness in its use. Goals: The agricultural activity in the lower part of the Sinaloa Riverdepends on the fresh water of the regional dams and the aquifer. Methods: The use of groundwater represents approximately 15% of the total water used. In the presence of prolonged periods of drought, new wells are drilled without the use of an appropriate guide for farmers on the location of aquifer areas with a greater hydraulic transmissivity with the purpose of exploiting them more rationally. The National Water Commission has registered more than 680 wells on both banks of the Sinaloa River. Results: The information of 205 of these pumping wells for agricultural or domestic use and the specific capacity information was analyzed. Then, 79 out of 205 wells have pumping tests. It is then determined that the objective of this research work was to find the relationship between the specific capacity (Qe) and hydraulic transmissivity (T) data of the study area using the Thiem formula, considering a fixed value of the radius of influence. This hypothetical consideration and the heterogeneities of the aquifer environment add to the T-Qe relationship an additional component, it is determined that it has a normal behavior. Using the Kalman filter it is possible to eliminate or reduce such a component, thus improving the determination of the T-Qe relation of an R-value of 0.95 (without filter) to 0.97 (with filter), for a linear and exponential relationship. Conclusions: The application of a T-Qe estimate allows characterizing the aquifer area, with this procedure a map was obtained on the distribution of T, which will serve as a guide for future exploitations of groundwater in the study area.Antecedentes: El conocimiento sobre el manejo del agua como recurso indispensable para desarrollar la agricultura permite tener mayor efectividad en su uso. Objetivos: La actividad agrícola en la parte baja del río Sinaloa depende del agua dulce de las presas regionales y del acuífero. Métodos: El uso del agua subterránea, representa aproximadamente el 15% del agua total usada. Ante la aparición de periodos de sequía prolongados, se perforan nuevos pozos sin el uso de una guía apropiada que oriente a los agricultores sobre la ubicación de las zonas acuíferas que tienen una mayor transmisividad hidráulica con el propósito de explotarlos de manera más racional. Resultados: La Comisión Nacional del agua tiene registrados más de 680 pozos en ambas márgenes del Río Sinaloa. Se analizó la información de 205 de estos pozos de bombeo para uso agrícola o doméstico y la información de capacidad específica. De este número, 79 pozos tienen pruebas de bombeo. Se determina entonces que el objetivo de este trabajo de investigación fue encontrar la relación entre los datos de capacidad especifica (Qe) y transmisividad hidráulica (T) de la zona de estudio usando la fórmula de Thiem, considerando un valor fijo del radio de influencia. Conclusiones: Esta consideración hipotética y las heterogeneidades del medio acuífero suman a la relación T Qe una componente adicional, se determina que tiene un comportamiento normal. Mediante el filtro de Kalman es posible eliminar o reducir tal componente, mejorando así la determinación de la relación T-Qe de un valor r de 0.95 (sin filtro) a 0.97 (con filtro), para una relación lineal y exponencial. La aplicación de una estimación T-Qe permite caracterizar la zona acuífera, con este procedimiento se obtuvo un mapa sobre ladistribución de T, que servirá de guía para futuras explotaciones del agua subterránea en la zona de estudio

    ESTIMATION OF HYDRAULIC CONDUCTIVITY AND CONTENT OF FINES FROM EXPERIMENTAL LAWS THAT CORELATE HYDRAULIC AND ELECTRIC PARAMETERS

    Hydraulic conductivity is a basic element in the advancement of knowledge of a geological environment in both the flow and transport processes of pollutants for conservation projects, managementand environmental management and also for the development of public policies for protection of ecosystems, among others. The aim of this paper is to obtain the hydraulic conductivity (K) and the finescontent (C) of saturated granular half using two empirical laws. One correlates the electrical conductivity of saturated granular media σo and water saturated σw which depends on the formation factor(F), cation exchange capacity (CEC) and the fines content in the saturated soil. Using data obtained from materials of 18 samples from 6 wells the relationships between F-C and CEC-C were obtained,so the equation reduces to a σo function in terms of σw and C, with a correlation coefficient of R = 0.97. A second experimental law is the one that results from the experimental relationship between K and C,being 1.4054 K 0.1804.C with a correlation coefficient of R = 0.96. From both experimental expressions relationships between K and C, a and C,and C are created so from every pair knowing one of them you get to know the other one. Under the scheme outlined electrical conductivity sections for the saturated medium and fines content are obtained,finding that the groundwater in the study area consists of a thin top layer and beneath it there is a predominantly sandy environment

    Calidad y aptitud de uso agrícola y doméstico del agua del acuífero del río Sinaloa, porción costera

    The Guasave valley, Sinaloa is mainly agricultural. There are rural communities that supply water for domestic use from local wells. Economic and social activities occurring on this valley demand water, so that water extraction has shifted to the coastal zone. For this reason, it is important to know the natural mechanisms that control the water chemical composition, its quality, its impact on the ground and its temporal variation in response to its suitability for agricultural or domestic use. To determine the mechanism controlling the water chemistry, the Gibbs diagram was used and it was found that the dominant mechanism is evaporation-weathering. Regarding the domestic use of water, PHASECH quality index was used, finding that water quality is only acceptable near the Sinaloa river. Concerning the suitability for agricultural water use, Wilcox diagram was employed and only 48% the water in the area was classified from good to admissible. Regarding the risk of soil salinization or sodification, the salinity diagram of the U. S. Department of Agriculture was used and it was observed that 35% of the water was located in the C3S1 area. The interrelationship between total dissolved solids and electrical conductivity of water was EC = 1.65 TDS. In addition, it is concluded that the Sinaloa river aquifer is highly sensitive to salinity due its coastal character and the presence of evaporitic bodies far away from the coastline, therefore the threat of saltwater intrusion during a dry period is latent. The presence of the Sinaloa river is an important recharging element that keeps groundwater in suitable conditions for agriculture and very close to those required for domestic use.El valle de Guasave, Sinaloa, es eminentemente agrícola y cuenta con comunidades rurales que se abastecen de agua para su uso doméstico mediante pozos ubicados en sus predios. La actividad económica y social de dicho valle demanda agua para ambas actividades, por lo que su extracción se ha desplazado hacia la zona costera, siendo importante conocer los mecanismos naturales que controlan la composición química del agua, su calidad, su variación temporal atendiendo a la aptitud de uso agrícola o doméstica. Para determinar el mecanismo que controla la composición química del agua se utilizó el diagrama de Gibbs, encontrándose que el mecanismo dominante es por evaporizaciónmeteorización. Respecto al agua para uso doméstico se utilizó el índice de calidad PHASECH, encontrándose que el agua cumple con el mismo sólo en las proximidades del río Sinaloa. En cuanto a la aptitud de uso agrícola del agua se utilizó el diagrama de Wilcox, encontrándose que sólo el 48% del agua de la zona se clasifica como buena a admisible. En cuanto al riesgo de salinización o sodificación del suelo por el uso del agua de riego, se usó el diagrama de salinidad del Departamento de Agricultura de Estados Unidos de Norteamérica, encontrándose que el 35% del agua se ubica en la zona C3S1. La relación obtenida entre los sólidos totales disueltos y la conductividad eléctrica del agua, fue EC = 1.65 STD. Se concluye además, que el acuífero del río Sinaloa es altamente sensible a la salinización por su carácter costero y presencia de cuerpos evaporíticos alejados de la línea de costa, por lo que, el peligro de intrusión salina ante un periodo de sequía es latente. La presencia del río Sinaloa es un elemento relevante de recarga que permite mantener el agua subterránea en condiciones aptas para la agricultura y muy cercanas a las requeridas para uso doméstico

    Competencias para el ejercicio de la dirección de instituciones educativas : reflexiones y experiencias en Iberoamérica

    El presente texto es el resultado de las aportaciones al encuentro realizado por los miembros de la Red de Apoyo a la Gestion Educativa (http://www.redage.org) en junio de 2011 en la ciudad de Lima. Constituye el tercer documento de la Serie Informes que ha producido la RedAGE y es expresión del compromiso constitutivo por analizar y difundir temáticas relacionadas con la organizaciÓn y dirección de los sistemas y centros educativos. El ejercicio directivo analizado desde la perspectiva de las competencias es la temática que se aborda en esta ocasión. Por una parte, se continúa la reflexión iniciada con el segundo informe, dedicado a la Dirección de centros educativos en Iberoamérica (http://www.redage.org/files/adjuntos/ Libro%20Red_AGE%20vd.pdf); por otra, se profundiza desde la perspectiva de las competencias con la idea de difundir e impulsar el nuevo enfoque. Tratamos así de un tema incipiente en algunos de los países, pero presente y parte de la agenda de los responsables de la política educativa, con la idea de aportar elementos para las posibles acciones a desarrollar o a mejorar al respecto. Hablamos de competencias y sobre competencias1 y con ello nos referimos a las características de la persona relacionadas con una actuación de éxito en su lugar de trabajo. Se identifican así con la activación y aplicación de manera coordinada de elementos de diferente naturaleza (cognoscitivos, afectivos y procedimentales) para resolver situaciones profesionales concretas. El concepto de competencia es utilizado desde hace tiempo en el campo de la formación profesional, abriéndose camino, poco a poco, en todo el sistema educativo y en los procesos de formación continua, donde la gestión por competencias se ha convertido en un modelo integrador y orientador de las diferentes políticas de recursos humanos

    Antimicrobial resistance among migrants in Europe: a systematic review and meta-analysis

    BACKGROUND: Rates of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) are rising globally and there is concern that increased migration is contributing to the burden of antibiotic resistance in Europe. However, the effect of migration on the burden of AMR in Europe has not yet been comprehensively examined. Therefore, we did a systematic review and meta-analysis to identify and synthesise data for AMR carriage or infection in migrants to Europe to examine differences in patterns of AMR across migrant groups and in different settings. METHODS: For this systematic review and meta-analysis, we searched MEDLINE, Embase, PubMed, and Scopus with no language restrictions from Jan 1, 2000, to Jan 18, 2017, for primary data from observational studies reporting antibacterial resistance in common bacterial pathogens among migrants to 21 European Union-15 and European Economic Area countries. To be eligible for inclusion, studies had to report data on carriage or infection with laboratory-confirmed antibiotic-resistant organisms in migrant populations. We extracted data from eligible studies and assessed quality using piloted, standardised forms. We did not examine drug resistance in tuberculosis and excluded articles solely reporting on this parameter. We also excluded articles in which migrant status was determined by ethnicity, country of birth of participants' parents, or was not defined, and articles in which data were not disaggregated by migrant status. Outcomes were carriage of or infection with antibiotic-resistant organisms. We used random-effects models to calculate the pooled prevalence of each outcome. The study protocol is registered with PROSPERO, number CRD42016043681. FINDINGS: We identified 2274 articles, of which 23 observational studies reporting on antibiotic resistance in 2319 migrants were included. The pooled prevalence of any AMR carriage or AMR infection in migrants was 25·4% (95% CI 19·1-31·8; I2 =98%), including meticillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (7·8%, 4·8-10·7; I2 =92%) and antibiotic-resistant Gram-negative bacteria (27·2%, 17·6-36·8; I2 =94%). The pooled prevalence of any AMR carriage or infection was higher in refugees and asylum seekers (33·0%, 18·3-47·6; I2 =98%) than in other migrant groups (6·6%, 1·8-11·3; I2 =92%). The pooled prevalence of antibiotic-resistant organisms was slightly higher in high-migrant community settings (33·1%, 11·1-55·1; I2 =96%) than in migrants in hospitals (24·3%, 16·1-32·6; I2 =98%). We did not find evidence of high rates of transmission of AMR from migrant to host populations. INTERPRETATION: Migrants are exposed to conditions favouring the emergence of drug resistance during transit and in host countries in Europe. Increased antibiotic resistance among refugees and asylum seekers and in high-migrant community settings (such as refugee camps and detention facilities) highlights the need for improved living conditions, access to health care, and initiatives to facilitate detection of and appropriate high-quality treatment for antibiotic-resistant infections during transit and in host countries. Protocols for the prevention and control of infection and for antibiotic surveillance need to be integrated in all aspects of health care, which should be accessible for all migrant groups, and should target determinants of AMR before, during, and after migration.     Surgical site infection after gastrointestinal surgery in high-income, middle-income, and low-income countries: a prospective, international, multicentre cohort study

    Background: Surgical site infection (SSI) is one of the most common infections associated with health care, but its importance as a global health priority is not fully understood. We quantified the burden of SSI after gastrointestinal surgery in countries in all parts of the world. Methods: This international, prospective, multicentre cohort study included consecutive patients undergoing elective or emergency gastrointestinal resection within 2-week time periods at any health-care facility in any country. Countries with participating centres were stratified into high-income, middle-income, and low-income groups according to the UN's Human Development Index (HDI). Data variables from the GlobalSurg 1 study and other studies that have been found to affect the likelihood of SSI were entered into risk adjustment models. The primary outcome measure was the 30-day SSI incidence (defined by US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention criteria for superficial and deep incisional SSI). Relationships with explanatory variables were examined using Bayesian multilevel logistic regression models. This trial is registered with ClinicalTrials.gov, number NCT02662231. Findings: Between Jan 4, 2016, and July 31, 2016, 13 265 records were submitted for analysis. 12 539 patients from 343 hospitals in 66 countries were included. 7339 (58·5%) patient were from high-HDI countries (193 hospitals in 30 countries), 3918 (31·2%) patients were from middle-HDI countries (82 hospitals in 18 countries), and 1282 (10·2%) patients were from low-HDI countries (68 hospitals in 18 countries). In total, 1538 (12·3%) patients had SSI within 30 days of surgery. The incidence of SSI varied between countries with high (691 [9·4%] of 7339 patients), middle (549 [14·0%] of 3918 patients), and low (298 [23·2%] of 1282) HDI (p < 0·001). The highest SSI incidence in each HDI group was after dirty surgery (102 [17·8%] of 574 patients in high-HDI countries; 74 [31·4%] of 236 patients in middle-HDI countries; 72 [39·8%] of 181 patients in low-HDI countries). Following risk factor adjustment, patients in low-HDI countries were at greatest risk of SSI (adjusted odds ratio 1·60, 95% credible interval 1·05–2·37; p=0·030). 132 (21·6%) of 610 patients with an SSI and a microbiology culture result had an infection that was resistant to the prophylactic antibiotic used. Resistant infections were detected in 49 (16·6%) of 295 patients in high-HDI countries, in 37 (19·8%) of 187 patients in middle-HDI countries, and in 46 (35·9%) of 128 patients in low-HDI countries (p < 0·001). Interpretation: Countries with a low HDI carry a disproportionately greater burden of SSI than countries with a middle or high HDI and might have higher rates of antibiotic resistance. In view of WHO recommendations on SSI prevention that highlight the absence of high-quality interventional research, urgent, pragmatic, randomised trials based in LMICs are needed to assess measures aiming to reduce this preventable complication

    Obesity and the food system transformation in Latin America

    The Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) region faces a major diet-related health problem accompanied by enormous economic and social costs. The shifts in diet are profound: major shifts in intake of less-healthful low-nutrient-density foods and sugary beverages, changes in away-from-home eating and snacking and rapid shifts towards very high levels of overweight and obesity among all ages along with, in some countries, high burdens of stunting. Diet changes have occurred in parallel to, and in two-way causality with, changes in the broad food system – the set of supply chains from farms, through midstream segments of processing, wholesale and logistics, to downstream segments of retail and food service (restaurants and fast food chains). An essential contribution of this piece is to marry and integrate the nutrition transition literature with the literature on the economics of food system transformation. These two literatures and debates have been to date largely ‘two ships passing in the night’. This review documents in-depth the recent history of rapid growth and transformation of that broad food system in LAC, with the rapid rise of supermarkets, large processors, fast food chains and food logistics firms. The transformation is the story of a ‘double-edged sword’, showing its links to various negative diet side trends, e.g. the rise of consumption of fast food and highly processed food, as well as in parallel, to various positive trends, e.g. the reduction of the cost of food, de-seasonalization, increase of convenience of food preparation reducing women's time associated with that and increase of availability of some nutritious foods like meat and dairy. We view the transformation of the food system, as well as certain aspects of diet change linked to long-run changes in employment and demographics (e.g. the quest for convenience), as broad parameters that will endure for the next decades without truly major regulatory and fiscal changes. We then focus in on what are the steps that are being and can be taken to curb the negative effects on diet of these changes. We show that countries in LAC are already among the global leaders in initiating demand-related solutions via taxation and marketing controls. But we also show that this is only a small step forward. To shift LAC's food supply towards prices that incentivize consumption of healthier diets and demand away from the less healthy component is not simple and will not happen immediately. We must be cognizant that ultimately, food industry firms must be incentivized to market the components of healthy diets. This will primarily need to be via selective taxes and subsidies, marketing controls, as well as food quality regulations, consumer education and, in the medium term, consumers' desires to combine healthier foods with their ongoing quest for convenience in the face of busy lives. In the end, the food industry in LAC will orient itself towards profitable solutions, ie those demanded by the broad mass of consumers
