    Automatic lyric transcription from karaoke vocal tracks: resources and a baseline system

    Automatic sung speech recognition is a relatively understudied topic that has been held back by a lack of large and freely available datasets. This has recently changed thanks to the release of the DAMP Sing! dataset, a 1100 hour karaoke dataset originating from the social music-making company, Smule. This paper presents work undertaken to define an easily replicable, automatic speech recognition benchmark for this data. In particular, we describe how transcripts and alignments have been recovered from Karaoke prompts and timings; how suitable training, development and test sets have been defined with varying degrees of accent variability; and how language models have been developed using lyric data from the LyricWikia website. Initial recognition experiments have been performed using factored-layer TDNN acoustic models with lattice-free MMI training using Kaldi. The best WER is 19.60% - a new state-of-the-art for this type of data. The paper concludes with a discussion of the many challenging problems that remain to be solved. Dataset definitions and Kaldi scripts have been made available so that the benchmark is easily replicable

    Search for composite and exotic fermions at LEP 2

    A search for unstable heavy fermions with the DELPHI detector at LEP is reported. Sequential and non-canonical leptons, as well as excited leptons and quarks, are considered. The data analysed correspond to an integrated luminosity of about 48 pb^{-1} at an e^+e^- centre-of-mass energy of 183 GeV and about 20 pb^{-1} equally shared between the centre-of-mass energies of 172 GeV and 161 GeV. The search for pair-produced new leptons establishes 95% confidence level mass limits in the region between 70 GeV/c^2 and 90 GeV/c^2, depending on the channel.     An update of the searches for charginos and gravitinos is presented, based on a data sample corresponding to the 158 pb^{-1} recorded by the DELPHI detector in 1998, at a centre-of-mass energy of 189 GeV. No evidence for a signal was found. The lower mass limits are 4-5 GeV/c^2 higher than those obtained at a centre-of-mass energy of 183 GeV. The (\mu,M_2) MSSM domain excluded by combining the chargino searches with neutralino searches at the Z resonance implies a limit on the mass of the lightest neutralino which, for a heavy sneutrino, is constrained to be above 31.0 GeV/c^2 for tan(beta) \geq 1.Comment: 22 pages, 8 figure

    Search for lightest neutralino and stau pair production in light gravitino scenarios with stau NLSP

    Promptly decaying lightest neutralinos and long-lived staus are searched for in the context of light gravitino scenarios. It is assumed that the stau is the next to lightest supersymmetric particle (NLSP) and that the lightest neutralino is the next to NLSP (NNLSP). Data collected with the Delphi detector at centre-of-mass energies from 161 to 183 \GeV are analysed. No evidence of the production of these particles is found. Hence, lower mass limits for both kinds of particles are set at 95% C.L.. The mass of gaugino-like neutralinos is found to be greater than 71.5 GeV/c^2. In the search for long-lived stau, masses less than 70.0 to 77.5 \GeVcc are excluded for gravitino masses from 10 to 150 \eVcc . Combining this search with the searches for stable heavy leptons and Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model staus a lower limit of 68.5 \GeVcc may be set for the stau mas

    Effect of grain size variation on strontium sorption to heterogeneous aquifer sediments

    Strontium-90 (90Sr) is a major contaminant at nuclear legacy sites. The mobility of 90Sr is primarily governed by sorption reactions with sediments controlled by high surface area phases such as clay and iron oxides. Sr2+ adsorption was investigated in heterogeneous unconsolidated aquifer sediments, analogous to those underlying the UK Sellafield nuclear site, with grainsizes ranging from gravels to clays. Batch sorption tests showed that a linear Kd adsorption model was applicable to all grainsize fractions up to equilibrium [Sr] of 0.28 mmol L−1. Sr2+ sorption values (Kd; Langmuir qmax) correlated well with bulk sediment properties such as cation exchange capacity and surface area. Electron microscopy showed that heterogeneous sediments contained porous sandstone clasts with clay minerals (i.e. chlorite) providing an additional adsorption capacity. Therefore, gravel corrections that assumed that the > 2 mm fractions are inert were not appropriate and underestimated Kd(bulk) adsorption coefficients. However, Kd (<2 mm) values measured from sieved sediment fractions, were effectively adjusted to within error of Kd (bulk) using a surface area dependant gravel correction based on particle size distribution data. Amphoteric pH dependent Sr2+ sorption behaviour observed in batch experiments was consistent with cation exchange modelling between pH 2–7 derived from the measured cation exchange capacities. Above pH 7 model fits were improved by invoking a coupled cation exchange/surface complexation which allowed for addition sorption to iron oxide phases. The overall trends in Sr2+ sorption (at pH 6.5–7) produced by increasing solution ionic strength was also reproduced in cation exchange models. Overall, the results showed that Sr2+ sorption to heterogeneous sediment units could be estimated from Kd (<2 mm) data using appropriate gravel corrections, and effectively modelled using coupled cation exchange and surface complexation processes

    Evidence for grey matter MTR abnormality in minimally disabled patients with early relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis

    Objectives: To establish whether magnetisation transfer ratio (MTR) histograms are sensitive to change in normal appearing grey matter (NAGM) in early relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis (RRMS) in the absence of significant disability; and to assess whether grey or white matter MTR measures are associated with clinical measures of impairment in early RRMS Methods: 38 patients were studied (mean disease duration 1.9 years (range 0.5 to 3.7); median expanded disability status scale (EDSS) 1.5 (0 to 3)), along with 35 healthy controls. MTR was determined from proton density weighted images with and without MT presaturation. SPM99 was used to generate normal appearing white matter (NAWM) and NAGM segments of the MTR map, and partial voxels were minimised with a 10 pu threshold and voxel erosions. Mean MTR was calculated from the tissue segments. Atrophy measures were determined using a 3D fast spoiled gradient recall sequence from 37 patients and 17 controls. Results: Mean NAGM and NAWM MTR were both reduced in early RRMS (NAGM MTR: 31.9 pu in patients v 32.2 pu in controls; p<0.001; NAWM MTR: 37.9 v 38.3 pu, p = 0.001). Brain parenchymal fraction (BPF) correlated with NAGM MTR, but when BPF was included as a covariate NAGM MTR was still lower in the patients (p = 0.009). EDSS correlated with NAGM MTR (r = 0.446 p = 0.005). Conclusions: In early RRMS, grey matter MTR abnormality is apparent. The correlation with mild clinical impairment (in this essentially non-disabled cohort) suggests that NAGM MTR could be a clinically relevant surrogate marker in therapeutic trials

    Tipburn resilience in lettuce (Lactuca spp.) – the importance of germplasm resources and production system‐specific assays

    BACKGROUND Tipburn is a physiological disorder of lettuce (Lactuca spp.). It causes discoloration and collapse of leaf margins, leading to unsaleable crops in both protected (glasshouse, hydroponic) and outdoor production systems. The occurrence of tipburn is hard to predict and is sensitive to environmental conditions. Phenotyping for tipburn resilience requires diverse germplasm resources and, to date, limited material has been investigated for this condition. RESULTS Using a Lactuca diversity fixed foundation set (DFFS) under glasshouse conditions, we identified a significant (P < 0.001) genotypic effect on tipburn resilience across both the entire population and across lines belonging to the cultivated species L. sativa alone. Latuca sativa lines exhibited significantly (P < 0.05) higher average tipburn severity than those belonging to the wild species L. saligna, L. serriola, and L. virosa but we were able to identify both cultivated and wild tipburn-resilient lines. Leaf morphology factors, which included pigmentation, width, and serration, also significantly (P < 0.05) influenced tipburn resilience. Using a recombinant inbred line (RIL) mapping population derived from two DFFS lines, different small-effect quantitative trait loci (QTLs) accounting for 12.3% and 25.2% of total tipburn variation were identified in glasshouse and field conditions, respectively. CONCLUSIONS These results reflect the advantages of phenotyping under production-system-specific conditions for the examination of environmentally sensitive traits and highlight genetic markers and germplasm resources for the development of tipburn resilient lines for use in both protected and outdoor lettuce production

    Integrating sequence and array data to create an improved 1000 Genomes Project haplotype reference panel

    A major use of the 1000 Genomes Project (1000GP) data is genotype imputation in genome-wide association studies (GWAS). Here we develop a method to estimate haplotypes from low-coverage sequencing data that can take advantage of single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) microarray genotypes on the same samples. First the SNP array data are phased to build a backbone (or 'scaffold') of haplotypes across each chromosome. We then phase the sequence data 'onto' this haplotype scaffold. This approach can take advantage of relatedness between sequenced and non-sequenced samples to improve accuracy. We use this method to create a new 1000GP haplotype reference set for use by the human genetic community. Using a set of validation genotypes at SNP and bi-allelic indels we show that these haplotypes have lower genotype discordance and improved imputation performance into downstream GWAS samples, especially at low-frequency variants. © 2014 Macmillan Publishers Limited.
