Emotional Phenomenology: Toward a Nonreductive Analysis
In this article I want to create a presumption in favor of a nonreductive analysis of emotional phenomenology. The presumption relies on the claim that none of the nonemotional elements which are usually regarded as constitutive of emotional phenomenology may reasonably be considered responsible for the evaluative character of the latter. In section 1 I suggest this is true of cognitive elements, arguing that so-called ‘evaluative’ judgments usually result from emotional, evaluative attitudes, and should not be conflated with them. In section 2 I argue the same holds true for conative attitudes (desires and acts of the will). Driving chronicity in rheumatoid arthritis: perpetuating role of myeloid cells
Acute inflammation is a complex and tightly regulated homeostatic process that includes leukocyte migration from the vasculature into tissues to eliminate the pathogen/injury, followed by a pro-resolving response promoting tissue repair. However, if inflammation is uncontrolled as in chronic diseases such as Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) it leads to tissue damage and disability. Synovial tissue inflammation in RA patients is maintained by sustained activation of multiple inflammatory positive-feedback regulatory pathways in a variety of cells including myeloid cells. In this review, we will highlight recent evidence uncovering biological mechanisms contributing to the aberrant activation of myeloid cells that contributes to perpetuation of inflammation in RA, and discuss emerging data on anti-inflammatory mediators contributing to sustained remission that may inform a novel category of therapeutic targets
Aristotle's Peculiarly Human Psychology
For Aristotle, human cognition has a lot in common both with non-human
animal cognition and with divine cognition. With non-human animals, humans
share a non-rational part of the soul and non-rational cognitive faculties
(DA 427b6–14, NE 1102b29 and EE 1219b24–6). With gods, humans share
a rational part of the soul and rational cognitive faculties (NE 1177b17–
1178a8). The rational part and the non-rational part of the soul, however,
coexist and cooperate only in human souls (NE 1102b26–9, EE 1219b28–31).
In this chapter, I show that a study of this cooperation helps to uncover some
distinctive aspects of human cognition and desire
Embodiment in High-altitude Mountaineering: Sensing and Working with the Weather
In order to address sociological concerns with embodiment and learning, in this article we explore the ‘weathering’ body in a currently under-researched physical-cultural domain. Weather experiences too are under-explored in sociology, and here we examine in-depth the lived experience of weather, and more specifically ‘weather work’ and ‘weather learning’, in one of the most extreme and corporeally-challenging environments on earth: high-altitude mountains. Drawing on a theoretical framework of phenomenological sociology, and an interview-based research project with 19 international, high-altitude mountaineers, we investigate weather as lived and experienced both corporeally and cognitively. We are particularly interested in conceptualising and theorising the ways in which embodied beings relate to the environment through different aspects of their being. The novel concepts of ‘weather work’ and ‘weather learning’, we argue, provide salient examples of the mind-body-world nexus at work, as an embodied practice and mode of thinking, strongly contoured by the physical culture of high-altitude mountaineering
