Both wild and domesticated animals had a direct and wide-ranging role in the life of the ancient Greeks and Romans. The bond between humans and animals which first originated in the economic needs went far beyond strictly practical matters. It did influence and enrich the Classical culture in its major aspects from literature and arts to philosophy and ethics. It also induced people to analyze the main implications of their relationship with subhuman creatures. The present paper aims to survey the range of the attitudes they developed about animals. It also examines to what extent they were concerned with the problems related to animal welfare and rights, and how they coped with them

To What Extent Can the CJEU Contribute to Increasing the EU Legislative Process’ Transparency?

Alongside other actors such as the European Ombudsman, the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) plays what looks like, at first sight, a key role in improving the transparency of EU legislative procedures. To take two relatively recent examples, the De Capitani v. European Parliament (2018) judgment was perceived as a victory by those in favor of increased transparency of EU legislative procedures at the stage of trilogues, as was the ClientEarth v. European Commission (2018) judgment regarding the pre-initiative stage. Both rulings emphasize the need for “allowing citizens to scrutinize all the information which has formed the basis of a legislative act…[as] a precondition for the effective exercise of their democratic rights” (ClientEarth v. European Commission, 2018, §84; De Capitani v. European Parliament, 2018, §80). Nevertheless, while the CJEU’s case law may indeed contribute to improving the legislative process’ transparency, its impact on the latter is inherently limited and even bears the potential of having a perverse effect. This article sheds light on the limits of the CJEU’s capacity to act in this field and the potential effects of its case law on the EU institutions’ attitudes or internal organization

Torque maximisation of the PMAC motor for high performance, low inertia operation

This paper describes the techniques applied to maximise the torque en- velope of the permanent magnet AC (PMAC) motor operating under current and voltage constraints. Standard steady-state descriptions of the system are often suitable for control purposes when the rotor velocity is varying rela- tively slowly. In low inertia applications such as clutchless gearchange opera- tions, where in the pursuit of driveability, the motor is required to accelerate and decelerate its own rotor inertia as quickly as possible. In this case, the voltage drop due to the current dynamics start to become significant. This paper presents a method to reserve voltage headroom dynamically in the field-weakening region in order to maximise the torque envelope when the effective inertia is low. Experimental results show the effectiveness of this approach
