High energy protons from PKS 1333-33
In this letter we give an account of the possible acceleration of protons in
the outer radio lobes of the active galaxy PKS 1333-33. We also make estimates

Spectral properties and infrared absorption in manganites
Within a recently proposed variational approach it has been shown that, in
perovskites with , near the metal-insulator
transition, the combined effect of the magnetic and electron-phonon
interactions pushes the system toward a regime of two coexisting phases: a low
electron density one made by itinerant large polarons forming ferromagnetic
domains and a high electron density one made by localized small polarons giving
rise to paramagnetic or antiferromagnetic domains depending on temperature.
Employing the above-mentioned variational scheme, in this paper spectral and
optical properties of manganites are derived for at different
temperatures. It is found that the phase separation regime induces a robust
pseudogap in the excitation spectrum of the system. Then the conductivity
spectra are characterized by a transfer of spectral weight from high to low
energies, as the temperature decreases. In the metallic ferromagnetic
phase, at low two types of infrared absorption come out: a Drude term and a
broad absorption band due respectively to the coherent and incoherent motion of
large polarons. The obtained results turn out in good agreement with

Contact Line Instability and Pattern Selection in Thermally Driven Liquid Films
Liquids spreading over a solid substrate under the action of various forces
are known to exhibit a long wavelength contact line instability. We use an
example of thermally driven spreading on a horizontal surface to study how the
stability of the flow can be altered, or patterns selected, using feedback
control. We show that thermal perturbations of certain spatial structure
imposed behind the contact line and proportional to the deviation of the
contact line from its mean position can completely suppress the instability.
Due to the presence of mean flow and a spatially nonuniform nature of spreading
liquid films the dynamics of disturbances is governed by a nonnormal evolution
operator, opening up a possibility of transient amplification and nonlinear
instabilities. We show that in the case of thermal driving the nonnormality can
be significant, especially for small wavenumber disturbances, and trace the
origin of transient amplification to a close alignment of a large group of
eigenfunctions of the evolution operator. However, for values of noise likely
to occur in experiments we find that the transient amplification is not
sufficiently strong to either change the predictions of the linear stability
analysis or invalidate the proposed control approach.Comment: 13 pages, 14 figure
Search for chargino-neutralino production with mass splittings near the electroweak scale in three-lepton final states in √s=13 TeV pp collisions with the ATLAS detector
A search for supersymmetry through the pair production of electroweakinos with mass splittings near the electroweak scale and decaying via on-shell W and Z bosons is presented for a three-lepton final state. The analyzed proton-proton collision data taken at a center-of-mass energy of √s=13 TeV were collected between 2015 and 2018 by the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 139 fb−1. A search, emulating the recursive jigsaw reconstruction technique with easily reproducible laboratory-frame variables, is performed. The two excesses observed in the 2015–2016 data recursive jigsaw analysis in the low-mass three-lepton phase space are reproduced. Results with the full data set are in agreement with the Standard Model expectations. They are interpreted to set exclusion limits at the 95% confidence level on simplified models of chargino-neutralino pair production for masses up to 345 GeV

Search for the standard model Higgs boson decaying to a bb pair in events with two oppositely-charged leptons using the full CDF data set
We present a search for the standard model Higgs boson produced in
association with a Z boson in data collected with the CDF II detector at the
Tevatron, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9.45/fb. In events
consistent with the decay of the Higgs boson to a bottom-quark pair and the Z
boson to electron or muon pairs, we set 95% credibility level upper limits on
the ZH production cross section times the H -> bb branching ratio as a function
of Higgs boson mass. At a Higgs boson mass of 125 GeV/c^2 we observe (expect) a
limit of 7.1 (3.9) times the standard model value.Comment: To be submitted to Phys. Rev. Let

We report on a search for the standard model Higgs boson produced in
association with a vector boson in the full data set of proton-antiproton
collisions at TeV recorded by the CDF II detector at the
Tevatron, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9.45 fb. We
consider events having no identified charged lepton, a transverse energy
imbalance, and two or three jets, of which at least one is consistent with
originating from the decay of a quark. We place 95% credibility level upper
limits on the production cross section times standard model branching fraction
for several mass hypotheses between 90 and . For a Higgs
boson mass of , the observed (expected) limit is 6.7

neutrino, we set 95% credibility level upper limits on the WH production cross
section times the H->bb branching ratio as a function of Higgs boson mass. At a
Higgs boson mass of 125 GeV/c2 we observe (expect) a limit of 4.9 (2.8) times

Measurement of the multi-TeV neutrino cross section with IceCube using Earth absorption
Neutrinos interact only very weakly, so they are extremely penetrating.
However, the theoretical neutrino-nucleon interaction cross section rises with
energy such that, at energies above 40 TeV, neutrinos are expected to be
absorbed as they pass through the Earth. Experimentally, the cross section has
been measured only at the relatively low energies (below 400 GeV) available at
neutrino beams from accelerators \cite{Agashe:2014kda, Formaggio:2013kya}. Here
we report the first measurement of neutrino absorption in the Earth, using a
sample of 10,784 energetic upward-going neutrino-induced muons observed with
the IceCube Neutrino Observatory. The flux of high-energy neutrinos transiting
long paths through the Earth is attenuated compared to a reference sample that
follows shorter trajectories through the Earth. Using a fit to the
two-dimensional distribution of muon energy and zenith angle, we determine the
cross section for neutrino energies between 6.3 TeV and 980 TeV, more than an
order of magnitude higher in energy than previous measurements. The measured
cross section is (stat.) (syst.)
times the prediction of the Standard Model \cite{CooperSarkar:2011pa},
consistent with the expectation for charged and neutral current interactions.
We do not observe a dramatic increase in the cross section, expected in some
speculative models, including those invoking new compact dimensions
\cite{AlvarezMuniz:2002ga} or the production of leptoquarks

Antimicrobials: a global alliance for optimizing their rational use in intra-abdominal infections (AGORA)
Intra-abdominal infections (IAI) are an important cause of morbidity and are frequently associated with poor prognosis, particularly in high-risk patients. The cornerstones in the management of complicated IAIs are timely effective source control with appropriate antimicrobial therapy. Empiric antimicrobial therapy is important in the management of intra-abdominal infections and must be broad enough to cover all likely organisms because inappropriate initial antimicrobial therapy is associated with poor patient outcomes and the development of bacterial resistance. The overuse of antimicrobials is widely accepted as a major driver of some emerging infections (such as C. difficile), the selection of resistant pathogens in individual patients, and for the continued development of antimicrobial resistance globally. The growing emergence of multi-drug resistant organisms and the limited development of new agents available to counteract them have caused an impending crisis with alarming implications, especially with regards to Gram-negative bacteria. An international task force from 79 different countries has joined this project by sharing a document on the rational use of antimicrobials for patients with IAIs. The project has been termed AGORA (Antimicrobials: A Global Alliance for Optimizing their Rational Use in Intra-Abdominal Infections). The authors hope that AGORA, involving many of the world's leading experts, can actively raise awareness in health workers and can improve prescribing behavior in treating IAIs
