Learning in the Large - An Exploratory Study of Retrospectives in Large-Scale Agile Development
Many see retrospectives as the most important practice of agile software development. Previous studies of retrospectives have focused on pro- cess and outcome at team level. In this article, we study how a large-scale agile development project uses retrospectives through an analysis of retrospective reports identifying a total of 109 issues and 36 action items as a part of a longitudinal case study. We find that most of the issues identified relate to team-level learning and improvement, and discuss these findings in relation to current advice to improve learning outcome in large-scale agile development.Learning in the Large - An Exploratory Study of Retrospectives in Large-Scale Agile DevelopmentpublishedVersio
Room-temperature ferromagnetism in graphite driven by 2D networks of point defects
Ferromagnetism in carbon-based materials is appealing for both applications
and fundamental science purposes because carbon is a light and bio-compatible
material that contains only s and p electrons in contrast to traditional
ferromagnets based on 3d or 4f electrons. Here we demonstrate direct evidence
for ferromagnetic order locally at defect structures in highly oriented
pyrolytic graphite (HOPG) with magnetic force microscopy and in bulk
magnetization measurements at room temperature. Magnetic impurities have been
excluded as the origin of the magnetic signal after careful analysis supporting
an intrinsic magnetic behavior of carbon. The observed ferromagnetism has been
attributed to originate from unpaired electron spins localized at grain
boundaries of HOPG. Grain boundaries form two-dimensional arrays of point
defects, where their spacing depends on the mutual orientation of two grains.
Depending on the distance between these point defects, scanning tunneling
spectroscopy of grain boundaries showed two intense split localized states for
small distances between defects (< 4 nm) and one localized state at the Fermi
level for large distances between defects (> 4 nm).Comment: 19 pages, 5 figure
Understanding Work Practices of Autonomous Agile Teams: A Social-psychological Review
The purpose of this paper is to suggest additional aspects of social
psychology that could help when making sense of autonomous agile teams. To make
use of well-tested theories in social psychology and instead see how they
replicated and differ in the autonomous agile team context would avoid
reinventing the wheel. This was done, as an initial step, through looking at
some very common agile practices and relate them to existing findings in
social-psychological research. The two theories found that I argue could be
more applied to the software engineering context are social identity theory and
group socialization theory. The results show that literature provides
social-psychological reasons for the popularity of some agile practices, but
that scientific studies are needed to gather empirical evidence on these
under-researched topics. Understanding deeper psychological theories could
provide a better understanding of the psychological processes when building
autonomous agile team, which could then lead to better predictability and
intervention in relation to human factors
Pharmacokinetic aspects of retinal drug delivery
Drug delivery to the posterior eye segment is an important challenge in ophthalmology, because many diseases affect the retina and choroid leading to impaired vision or blindness. Currently, intravitreal injections are the method of choice to administer drugs to the retina, but this approach is applicable only in selected cases (e.g. anti-VEGF antibodies and soluble receptors). There are two basic approaches that can be adopted to improve retinal drug delivery: prolonged and/or retina targeted delivery of intravitreal drugs and use of other routes of drug administration, such as periocular, suprachoroidal, sub-retinal, systemic, or topical. Properties of the administration route, drug and delivery system determine the efficacy and safety of these approaches. Pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic factors determine the required dosing rates and doses that are needed for drug action. In addition, tolerability factors limit the use of many materials in ocular drug delivery. This review article provides a critical discussion of retinal drug delivery, particularly from the pharmacokinetic point of view. This article does not include an extensive review of drug delivery technologies, because they have already been reviewed several times recently. Instead, we aim to provide a systematic and quantitative view on the pharmacokinetic factors in drug delivery to the posterior eye segment. Monitoring of human papillomavirus vaccination
Persistent infection with oncogenic human papillomavirus (HPV) is a necessary causal factor in the development of cervical cancer. Moreover, HPV, predominately type 16 and to a lesser degree type 18, is linked causally to varying proportions of other anogenital cancers (vulva, vagina, penis, anus) as well as cancers elsewhere in the body (oropharynx, larynx, conjunctiva). HPV types 6 and 11 cause most of genital warts and recurrent respiratory papillomatosis. Effective prophylactic vaccines have been developed. In this review, we address briefly the immunological aspects of HPV infection and the results of HPV vaccination trials. Internationally standardized monitoring and evaluation of prophylactic HPV vaccination programmes will be essential for arriving at the most cost-effective strategies for cancer control
