Autumn and Winter Anomalies in Ionospheric Absorption as Measured by Riometers

    Get PDF
Seasonal variations of ionospheric absorption were studied using riometer (A2) measurements over a wide latitude range. In agreement with the results of earlier studies of A1 radiowave absorption, equinoctial maxima of approximately equal amplitude are observed in the auroral zone and near the equator. However, at intermediate latitudes riometer absorption maximizes during the fall season, whereas the A1 data show a semi-annual variation with maxima occurring in summer and winter. The autumn anomaly in riometer absorption is observed at much higher geographic latitude in the Southern Hemisphere, but at comparable geomagnetic latitudes in both hemispheres. The winter anomaly was seen only in absorption values calculated at constant solar zenith angle

Controlled Natural Language Generation from a Multilingual FrameNet-based Grammar

This paper presents a currently bilingual but potentially multilingual FrameNet-based grammar library implemented in Grammatical Framework. The contribution of this paper is two-fold. First, it offers a methodological approach to automatically generate the grammar based on semantico-syntactic valence patterns extracted from FrameNet-annotated corpora. Second, it provides a proof of concept for two use cases illustrating how the acquired multilingual grammar can be exploited in different CNL applications in the domains of arts and tourism

Transient ischaemic attack and stroke risk: pilot of a primary care electronic decision support tool

INTRODUCTION: Transient ischaemic attacks (TIAs) indicate high risk for stroke and rapid management reduces stroke burden. Rapid specialist access to initiate timely management is often challenging to achieve. AIM: To assess the feasibility of implementing a TIA/Stroke electronic decision support (EDS) tool intended to aid general practitioners (GPs) in the timely management of TIAs. METHODS: An eight-week pilot provided access to the TIA/Stroke EDS to selected GPs in the MidCentral district, with subsequent patient record review and a post-pilot user satisfaction survey. RESULTS: Eleven patients from eight practices were entered into the tool and when EDS-rendered advice was followed, diagnosis was accurate and management was in accordance with New Zealand TIA guidelines. No adverse outcomes resulted and user feedback was positive. DISCUSSION: Results indicate that wider implementation of the TIA/Stroke EDS tool is feasible

Photogrammetric deformation measurement of a metal structure

Lähifotogrammetria tarjoaa tehokkaan tavan hankkia tietoa mitattavasta kohteesta siihen koskettamatta. Tässä työssä käsitellään fotogrammetrian teoriaa ja mittausprosessia sekä tutkitaan fotogrammetrisen menetelmän soveltuvuutta käytännön mittausongelmaan. Tämän työn mittausprosessin erityispiirteinä on ison, vaikeasti mitattavan rakenteen muodonmuutosmittaus käyttäen mittaukseen useamman kameran järjestelmää. Käytännön työ piti sisällään varsinaisen mittauksen lisäksi koekuvauksen säädellyissä olosuhteissa, jolla menetelmää kyseiseen mittausongelmaan validoitiin. Työn tarkoituksena oli selvittää kuinka hyvin fotogrammetrinen mittausmenetelmä soveltuu vaikeasti mitattavan metallirakenteen muodonmuutosmittaukseen.Close range photogrammetry provides an efficient way of obtaining knowledge of a measured target by the means of remote sensing. In this study the theory of photogrammetry is dealt with and the feasibility of using a photogrammetric method of measure-ment to practical application is explored. Specifically deformation measurement of a large structure using multi-camera system is studied. The practical part consists of validating the photogrammetric method in trial measurement performed in controlled environment and of the actual deformation measurement of the large structure. The goal was to determine how well photogrammetric method works in deflection measurement of an arduously measurable metal structure

Tulosten perusteella hoitohenkilökunnan suhtautuminen influenssarokotteeseen on enimmäkseen myönteistä. Yli puolet hoitohenkilökunnasta aikoo ottaa influenssarokotteen influenssakaudella 2017–2018. Tärkein syy rokotteen ottamiselle on halu suojata potilaita. Toisaalta neljäsosa hoitohenkilökunnasta ei aio ottaa influenssarokotetta influenssakaudella 2017–2018. Tärkein syy rokotteen ottamatta jättämiselle on huoli rokotteen haittavaikutuksista. Tartuntatautilain muutos koettiin ristiriitaisesti. Suurin osa piti rokotekattavuuden nousua hyvänä asiana, mutta toisaalta koettiin, että ratkaisuna pitäisi olla koulutus pakon sijaan. The purpose of this bachelor's thesis was to describe the attitudes of nursing staff towards influenza vaccine and to examine how their attitudes relate with background factors. A further purpose was to describe the attitudes of nursing staff towards the changes in Infectious Diseases Act. In this thesis, the quantitative methods were used to find out the attitudes of nursing staff towards influenza vaccine. Additionally, the attitudes of nursing staff towards the changes in Infectious Diseases Act were examined through qualitative methods. The objective of thesis was to generate information about the attitudes of nursing staff, towards the influenza vaccine. The information can then be used for improving nursing education, enhancing immunization coverage and for improving patient safety. According to the results, the attitudes of nursing staff towards influenza vaccine are primarily positive. More than a half of nursing staff is going to get vaccinated during influenza season 2017–2018. The main motivation for vaccination is the will to protect the patients. On the other hand, one quarter of the nursing staff will not be going to get vaccinated on influenza season 2017–2018. The main motivations for not getting vaccinated are concerns for the adverse effects of the vaccine. There were conflicting views in the attitudes towards the changes in Infectious Diseases Act. A majority felt that the improvement of immunization coverage was positive, yet on the other hand, some of the respondents thought that educating people was a better solution than forcing people to take the vaccine
