    Performance of drought tolerant rice varieties in different altitudes at Duradada, Lamjung, Nepal

    To evaluate high yielding drought tolerant rice varieties in different altitudes, a field experiment was carried out at Duradanda, Lamjung, Nepal during rainy season of 2016 under rainfed condition. The experiment was laid out in a factorial randomized block design with two replications. The treatments comprised of six different rice varieties viz. Sukhadhan-1, Sukhadhan-2, Sukhadhan-3, Sukhadhan-4, Sukhadhan-5 and Sukhadhan-6 and four altitudes viz. 1000, 1200, 1400 and 1600 masl. The results revealed that rice variety Sukhadhan-2 produced the highest grain yield (2.93 t/ha) followed by Sukhadhan-5 (2.92 t/ha) and Sukhadhan-3 (2.82 t/ha). The highest grain yield of Sukhadhan-2 was due to higher number of effective tillers/m2 (228), higher number of grains/panicle (83), higher panicle length (21.79 cm) and low sterility percentage (27.91%) as compared to other varieties. Regarding to altitudes, the highest grain yield (3.34 t/ha) was obtained in lower altitude (1000 masl) followed by 1200 masl (2.79 t/ha), 1400 masl (2.68 t/ha and 1600 masl (1.85 t/ha). The lower yield in higher altitude was due to higher sterility percentage, less number of effective tillers per unit area and less number of effective grains per panicle.     Cost-benefit analysis and resource use efficiency of rice production system in different agriculture landscapes in Chitwan district, Nepal

    The study was conducted to determine the cost-benefit analysis and resource use efficiency of the rice production system in different agriculture landscapes in the Chitwan district in 2018. The sample size of 102 rice-growing farmers out of 600 farmers, having an area of farm size greater than 0.5 hectares, was determined using Raosoft Inc. Software. A simple random sampling technique was used to collect 102 rice-growing household information in four municipalities (2 in plain and 2 in hilly area) using a semi-structured questionnaire. Data were analyzed using descriptive and statistical tools including Cobb-Douglas production function. Results showed that the use of inputs like seeds, chemical fertilizer and machinery like tractor were found significantly higher in the plain area whereas the use of inputs like labor, farmyard manure (FYM) and bullocks was found in higher in the hilly area. The costs of fertilizer, machinery, pesticide, and transportation were found higher in the plain area whereas the costs of seed, FYM, labor and bullocks were significantly higher in the hilly area. Production of rice per household was 1.87 ton whereas productivity was 5.2 ton/ha, gross profit was NRs. 41435and benefit-cost ratio was 1.59 in the plain area which was found significantly higher than the hilly area. The return to scale was found to be 0.48 which revealed that inputs used in rice production were ineffectively utilized in which organic fertilizer and labor resource were overused and seed, fertilizer, machinery and bullocks, pesticides and transportation were underused resources. The optimal allocation of these resources will increase the profitability of rice farming

    Efficacy of fungicides in management of Downy mildew disease of Cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.) under open field conditions, in Dhading district of Nepal

    Downy mildew (Pseudoperonospora cubensis) is one of the most important disease of cucumber under open field conditions. Hence, the experiment was conducted to study the efficacy of fungicides in management of downy mildew disease of cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.) under open field in Chauradi-7 Dhading during spring season, 2019. Bhaktapur local variety of cucumber was used for the study. The experiment was laid out in single factor randomized complete block design with four replications. Three different bio-fungicides; Trichoderma viride + Trichoderma harzianum, Bacillus subtilis, Verticillium lecanii and one chemical fungicide; Krilaxyl (metalaxyl 8% + mancozeb 64%) were used as treatments. Normal water spray served as control. It was observed that bio-fungicides had insignificant effect in controlling the downy mildew. Pathological observation such as disease incidence percentage, severity percentage and AUDPC in bio-fungicides treated plots were not significantly different from water-sprayed control plots. Similarly, biometric attributes such as number of fruit, length and diameter of fruit, weight of fruit were also non-significant. Krilaxyl resulted significant effect in controlling downy mildew, providing maximum disease reduction (37.48%-50.72%) with lowest disease incidence (1.25-61.25%) and lowest value of AUDPC (138.7). Krilaxyl treated plots had higher number of fruit (6), longer length of fruit (17.15-18.95), higher diameter of fruit (4.16- 4.45 cm) and higher weight of fruit (677 - 759 g). Hence, chemical fungicide Krilaxyl was found better for the management of downy mildew disease in open field cucumber cultivation. Further, researches on bio-fungicides, especially of native strains are required for best result

    Upper Gastrointestinal Bleeding Induced by Gastric Ulcer Secondary to Strongyloidiasis: A Case Report

    Strongyloidiasis, a parasitic infestation by Strongyloides stercoralis, involves the gastrointestinal tract with a spectrum from duodenitis to enterocolitis. However, gastric involvement with the manifestation of upper gastrointestinal bleeding is an extremely rare condition due to Strongyloides stercoralis. Due to irregular excretion of larvae, unclear symptoms, paucity of effective diagnostic tools and low parasitic load, makes clinicians difficult to reach the diagnosis of strongyloidiasis. Here, we present a case of upper gastrointestinal bleeding due to a large gastric ulcer whose aetiology was identified to be Strongyloides stercoralis infection of the gastric region by the diagnosis of exclusion

    Lentil is a staple in many diets around the world and growing in popularity as a quick-cooking, nutritious, plant-based source of protein in the human diet. Lentil varieties are usually grown close to where they were bred. Future climate change scenarios will result in increased temperatures and shifts in lentil crop production areas, necessitating expanded breeding efforts. We show how we can use a daylength and temperature model to identify varieties most likely to succeed in these new environments, expand genetic diversity, and give plant breeders additional knowledge and tools to help mitigate these changes for lentil producers.This research was conducted as part of the ‘Application of Genomics to Innovation in the Lentil Economy (AGILE)' project funded by Genome Canada and managed by Genome Prairie.     Konsep Critical Success Factor berkait rapat mengenai pengurusan dalam mencapai misi dan matlamat perniagaan dalam sesebuah organisasi. Oleh itu, kajian ini adalah bertujuan untuk mengkaji empat elemen Critical Success Factor di Jabatan Perdagangan Politeknik seterusnya melihat kecenderungan pelajar untuk melibatkan diri dalam bidang keusahawanan. Kajian jenis kuantitatif ini telah dibuat ke atas pensyarah di Jabatan Perdagangan Politeknik bagi zon Utara. Seramai 190 sampel kajian yang terlibat dalam penyelidikan ini melalui pengedaran borang kaji selidik. Antara enam buah politeknik di zon Utara yang terlibat dalam penyelidikkan ini adalah Politeknik Politeknik Tunku Syed Sirajuddin, Perlis, Politeknik Sultan Abdul Halim Muazzam Shah, Kedah, Politeknik Tunku Sultanah Bahiyah, Kedah, Politeknik Seberang Perai, Pulau Pinang, Politeknik Ungku Omar, Perak dan Politeknik Sultan Azlan Shah, Perak. Data yang diperolehi dianalisis mendapati nilai skor min bagi ketiga-tiga persoalan kajian iaitu, mengenalpasti elemen Critical Success Factor yang digunakan, cabaran dalam usaha melaksanakan elemen Critical Success Factor dan mengenalpasti tahap kecenderungan pelajar untuk melibatkan diri dalam bidang keusahawanan adalah tinggi. Manakala bagi persoalan kajian keempat iaitu mencari hubungan korelasi Pearson antara elemen Critical Suceess Factor dengan kecenderungan pelajar untuk melibatkan diri dalam bidang keusahawanan adalah berada pada tahap lemah, sekaligus menunjukkan Ho tidak diterima. Kesimpulannya, elemen Critical Success Factor ini memainkan peranan dalam pembentukkan organisasi yang berkesan supaya pembentukan matlamat dan objektif tercapa

    Psychometric Properties and Correlates of Precarious Manhood Beliefs in 62 Nations

    Precarious manhood beliefs portray manhood, relative to womanhood, as a social status that is hard to earn, easy to lose, and proven via public action. Here, we present cross-cultural data on a brief measure of precarious manhood beliefs (the Precarious Manhood Beliefs scale [PMB]) that covaries meaningfully with other cross-culturally validated gender ideologies and with country-level indices of gender equality and human development. Using data from university samples in 62 countries across 13 world regions (N = 33,417), we demonstrate: (1) the psychometric isomorphism of the PMB (i.e., its comparability in meaning and statistical properties across the individual and country levels); (2) the PMB’s distinctness from, and associations with, ambivalent sexism and ambivalence toward men; and (3) associations of the PMB with nation-level gender equality and human development. Findings are discussed in terms of their statistical and theoretical implications for understanding widely-held beliefs about the precariousness of the male gender role
